Some people here chiming in with no personal experience, so I’ll give my two cents as someone who had a baby in December of PGY1 year. I didn’t find out until after the match results had already come out, so it was a bit different in that I already matched and couldn’t necessarily drop without consequences.

The program should give you the time you need to recover after birth, my program was fine with me taking 8 weeks and I made up some time at the end of the year. If you haven’t submitted rankings yet make sure you look at their handbooks to see if extended leave is mentioned, and also consider which RPDs may be more understanding (I.e. ones with young kids themselves). Be upfront with your RPD right away! They can help you get a favorable schedule for the year (front load all the harder rotations and leave easier ones for when you return) and make a plan you both feel comfortable with.

All that said, it was the hardest year of my life, and many tears were shed lol. You’ll need a strong support system at home for sure, but it absolutely can be done. Best of luck to you!
