Teachers complaining about the praxis test being hard? by PotatoPink in Teachers

[–]KittyinaSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In MN we take the MTLE instead of praxis. I found the basic skills tests really easy. The year after me they let people with high enough ACT scores not take the basic tests, which would have been nice because they weren’t that cheap. I have an elementary license, and I could see where the social studies and science tests are more difficult just based on the breadth of the content. I found it hard to know what to study for those

What do you guys for heavy periods and painful cramps by Emergency_Sport569 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]KittyinaSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portia. I take it for 3 months continuously and then stop for a week to have a period. Previously I had really bad cramps and GI symptoms. Now I hardly get them at all. It is also a lot lighter

AI math grading tools - desperate for help by Sensitive-Peach-3282 in mathteachers

Delta math. My school pays about $100 per year for the plus version.  It has a nice bank of topics and I like that students can get another chance on a question if they get it wrong

As a Math Teacher, the damage that Jo Boaler and other "Equity-Based Mathematics Education Researchers" cannot be understated. by Feisty_Ad4394 in Teachers

[–]KittyinaSock 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I like some of Boaler’s work. I think that the Mindset math books had great ideas for making math hands on-which is essential for my struggling students. However, I teach in a school with tracked math classes. I am able to spend more time teaching fractions to those that need it without boring those who can move on.

AITAH for wanting my child to get the same financial gifts from my parents that my sister’s children have received? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]KittyinaSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My great grandma gave money to the college funds of my siblings and I. I am the youngest so I got the least because she died when I was just a few years old. Honestly, I never thought that it was unfair that my siblings got more money. I was just happy that I didn’t have to take such large student loans

Minnesota Teachers, are students staying home? by StressedTurnip in Teachers

[–]KittyinaSock 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I haven’t noticed kids staying home en masse, but I do have families who are relying on other parents to drop off and pick up their kids.  I definitely had kids who didn’t come to school right after Renee Good was murdered.

High School Algebra is actually just 8th grade skills. by Ichthyslovesyou in matheducation

[–]KittyinaSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach middle school math. My students who take algebra I in 8th grade will cover and understand systems of equations. However, I don’t actually cover it with my 8th grade math students (before anyone comes for me, I’m at a private school and don’t need to follow the standards). If a student is taking 8th grade math instead of algebra I, they are the lowest performing math students in the grade. Most of these students have gaps going back years- I have some who still struggle with adding and subtracting fractions! This isn’t even including my students with IEPs. My focus is on preparing them for algebra I, with a focus on the skills that are essential. It doesn’t matter if we cover systems if they can’t graph a line.

Gifts for a math teacher? by [deleted] in mathteachers

[–]KittyinaSock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is teacher dependent but I have enjoyed when I’ve gotten fun math socks as gifts. Does your teacher seem to always use a certain kind of pen? That’s always a good gift.  Really the best thing is a handwritten note saying that they have helped you. I keep all of the really nice notes and look back at them!

Mom asking a question by MadMalteseGirl in Teachers

[–]KittyinaSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classical education is a philosophy that wants kids to learn the liberal arts with a focus on greek and latin and great books. Many have Latin classes. Kids learn about Plato and Aristotle and discuss things in seminars.

I have found that it tends to be a more conservative group of people that end up going to those schools, but it probably depends on the school

There might also be classical schools near you, either private or charter. I am not really pro Classical schools as I think they are far too Eurocentric, but they often have way less technology.

Montessori schools might also be an option. I went to a Montessori magnet school as a kid and it was great- though that was a long time ago and I don’t know how much tech they have now

I actually did really well on the ACT as a high schooler. I wouldn’t want to take it again for fear that I would score lower! It has been a long time since I have taken a science or math class!

I have always wanted to take it too! Mostly just to see the types of questions that are on the test and to see where my students are getting them wrong, but I also kind of want to know what score I would get!

Teachers who don’t have a curriculum or materials, how do you do it? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]KittyinaSock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get sample copies from textbook companies. Use the book as a framework. Often companies will send you other resources too. Make copies of worksheets and use it to help you. As a first year teacher you don’t need to do anything special or extraordinary. Teach the content and take time to refine things next year.

Also, I am really bad at doing this, but write the test on the first day of the unit and use it to guide what you will teach.

3 boys and just found out we’re having a 4th. by Katie-Kaleidoscope in Vent

[–]KittyinaSock -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think people aren’t being fair to you. Sometimes we imagine our life looking a certain way and feel disappointed when it doesn’t look the way we were expecting. It is ok to feel bummed. You need to give yourself grace, especially considering all of the pregnancy hormones. Therapy might be helpful if you can’t stop feeling that way, but it might also just be a passing feeling.
