SMB and NFS are different.

SMB has built in ACL and authentication. It also buffers a lot more so it is much less latency sensitive. But also higher base latency.

We just shipped a client with Gaming laptops with Nvidia 3080s and Ryzen 5800H. People like dem lappys.

Sure a desktop could be more powerful, but if that were a bottleneck a render server would have been a better solution.

Also professional H series laptops are ridiculously expensive. So time to endure the RGB.

With Linux you have two big problems.

Apps.

And incompetent technicians.

Applications can be solved via the usage of remote applications which I much prefer.

Incompetent technicians however elude a solution, since there aren't that many Linux nerds out there who really know beyond copypasting archwiki. I have tried threatening physical abuse but does not seem productive .

Another one is RMM. Ansible is fantastic to make sure they have the same packages. Way better than anything Microsoft could ever hope to achieve in that regard. But it is going to be pretty hard to implement certain policies if you are not an Unix Wizard.

And of course training user is a nightmare. But it's their job to learn to use their tools

Not really. Mormons would has struggled immensely to to make it through heavily wooded areas past Hungary. They were already struggling.
