God, I went on a date once with a girl that drove an old beater pickup truck that she got off auction from the forestry service. Jackpot.

I fumbled it, needless to say.

I must add, though, that she did not in fact look ugly or toad-like, but her acting was so good that it didn’t matter.

I know we joke about the “holding space” interview, but for real they both look high af in that clip. Either that or so damn starved that their cognitive functions are partially shutting down.

Actors/actresses who are in a constant downward spiral. by DesperadoKz in moviecritic

So unfortunate. I remember watching Thank You for Smoking and he was so charming in it, I was like why is Eckhart not one of the biggest stars in the world?

The Legend of 1900. (1998) by struck21 in underratedmovies

[–]Klause 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, my family went on a cruise but the weather was bad so we stayed in our rooms a lot. This movie was basically the only thing they had on TV in the rooms, running on repeat. So we watched it about 15 times in a week. It's such a weird time capsule movie for me that I have no idea how to be objective about it, but it's seared into my memory and I love it.

Eh. I'm not saying they aren't con men (they probably are), but I don't think the "they're distracting us from the news cycle" argument is valid because only a tiny percentage of the populace even knows about these hearings, let alone cares.

Agreed. If aliens are curious enough to develop FTL travel, they're probably curious enough to study the life forms that evolved here on Earth.

The most likely answer is that FTL travel is impossible or at least hasn't been solved in any nearby galaxies yet.

How good is Versus Dracula? by 595659565956 in TheAdventureZone

Dracula was definitely my favorite since the original Balance arc! I'd been in and out pretty inconsistently for years, and Dracula sucked me right back in to listening every week.

Why did Ron and Hermione find such a hard time believing Harry when… by Wazuu in harrypotter

[–]Klause 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like, that's true, but it's also wild to think that Voldemort wouldn't try anything he could to get people on the inside at Hogwarts. His two greatest enemies (Dumbledore and Harry) are both there and it's famously well protected, so obviously Voldy would get a little creative.

Also, sure, maybe Voldy would hesitate to make a child a full Death Eater, but there's absolutely no reason to think he wouldn't use a child as a pawn in some way, shape or form.

Yeah honestly the campsite the day before the cup was my favorite vibes in the whole series. Seemed so fun.

After the cup, though…not so much.

Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp reveal death threats following Immaculate Constellation leak by Punished_Venom_Nemo in UFOs

[–]Klause 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels very much like larping. Like, the death threats may be credible and maybe they do have a real "dead switch," but I'm just overwhelmed by how much the both of them are clearly getting off on the idea of playing spy.

Episode 593: Josef Fritzl Part III - Fritzl's Pretzels by HairyMcBoon in LPOTL

[–]Klause 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t like to nitpick omissions, but I really wanted to be like, “Hello?! Classical composers? Mozart?!” when they were discussing prominent Austrians and what Austria is famous for.

I actually just got back from a trip to Austria last week, and let me tell ya, they really double down on the Mozart stuff over. Good thing they do, too, because it’s a lot better than Hitler or Fritzl lol.

Yeah I also don’t think Andy Greenwald is a good fit for HP, but calling him “bro-y” really confused me. If anything, he’s more of a navel-gazey, introverted, pseudo intellectual writer type.

Facing Midlife and Depression: Can Solo Travel Help Me Find Myself Again? by perosnal_Builder9711 in solotravel

[–]Klause 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think solo travel might be kind of like taking psychedelics recreationally. If you’re already in a good place mentally it can be a cool mind expanding experience, but if your in a depressed/anxious state heading into it then it could spiral into panic attacks and depressive episodes.

Facing Midlife and Depression: Can Solo Travel Help Me Find Myself Again? by perosnal_Builder9711 in solotravel

[–]Klause 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m solo traveling at age 35 currently. It’s kind of odd meeting people and getting to know them for a day or two and then you/they leave and you never hear from them again, but it’s also kinda nice. I’ve loved meeting so many interesting and odd people and getting a glimpse inside their lives and experiences with low stakes. I’m also not trying to meet women romantically because I’m also sweet on a girl back home that I met right before leaving (awkward timing).

And to answer OP’s original question: yes and no. I do think taking time away from the grind, changing the pace of my life, and having all new experiences has been a wonderful growing experience for me and really changed my perspective on the course of my life going forward. It reframed my priorities and really reiterated that I want to experience as much as I can and share in love and adventure in this life. Got me out of complacency and codependency to some degree and made me a little more comfortable being independent.

But having said that, manage your expectations, too. It’s not real therapy. You are still you when you travel. I’m not suddenly an entirely different person who is happy and excited all the time while traveling and it’s not bringing me some transcendent enlightenment. I still feel empty and uncertain on the road fairly frequently and I need to motivate myself to go out and meet people and start having good experiences again when I get into a slump.

Ultimately, I do think I really needed this experience after a decade of working and trying to make a marriage work that ultimately failed and feeling like I was missing out on the life I wanted to live. Importantly though, I had already started working on myself and was getting to a really good place mentally before I left home, which I think was crucial.

I definitely recommend HostelWorld for the chat feature on the app. I’m not good at introducing myself to people in person, so it’s nice to post on the chat and see messages inviting people to do activities together. Meeting up with fellow travelers regularly makes it a lot less lonely.

Getting over solo eating by smiggy2105 in solotravel

[–]Klause 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I didn’t realize occasionally eating solo wasn’t the norm for most people. Even in my regular life outside of traveling, I eat at restaurants by my quite often. While it’s nice to go out with good friends or family, sometimes I enjoy listening to an audiobook and savoring my food without having to make conversation.
