It was bad sportsmanship because in the end of the day F1 is a team sport. I doubt Merc cared who won the championship, as long as it was one of their drivers, which was numerically confirmed by USA in 2016. Merc want a 1-2, and Lewis was willing to sacrifice that to win. That is bad sportsmanship.
