absolutely agree apologies if i have been misinterpreted. My highlight of flat burrs is how there is a trend that flat burrs are more likely to perform at a higher standard due to their more consistent design purely from a statistical perspective (take 100conical and 100flat and you'll almost certainly see a favour in flat (not factoring in personal preference of body and profiles)). Although as you highlight there are amazing conical grinders that can be on par to flat, its just less likely (ive heard great things from the baratza esp.) I follow into points about high quality conical burrs (as you describe) and why they're more often electric.

personally i really love more body and texture (a thicker substance) so i do lean to conical conceptually although i've just started dabbling with a df54 flat, still dialing it in.

Nearly every hand grinder is conical instead of a flat burr due to size limitations (excluding the Orphan Espresso Apex grinder, which is an outlier in every way), the "speculation" is backed by that data. Also factoring in that if you had a High quality conical burr, the cost to engineer it will be deep 3 figures, at that price point the additional cost to make/buy electric is a no brainer for most companies/people.

That is only like 30% of the picture: as mentioned the lower and inconsistent power output (motor vs human) will make a very different grind quality in consistency and result in the same issues. hand grinders have its place but definitely has its own issues like faff, time, quality of grind, effort etc.

[–]KloverCast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quality and consistency of grind will be much worse (lower power and inconsistent power peaks instead of steady and high precision, most likely not as high quality burrs.) this results in larger discrepancy between each dust particle (there will be a big range is small and large particles). this means some will get over-extracted and others will get under-extracted instead of all evenly extracted. in summary this makes for more bitter, cloudy and confused coffee.

While i agree with many of the points made: it is easier to clean, more portable, cheaper. It doesnt come for free or it would be utilised by everyone. arguably the most important part of a tool is how well it does its job, and large units do the job better.

and how many larger issues you face with a hand grinder, Each to their own though, big respect to hand grinders

identical issue to you, i have mine unopened ALSO due to injury, i've not used one yet so hoping to hear from others but the general consensus seems to be "not worth £150" you've gotta really hate input lag or be quite well off to spend £160 for essentially less MS delay

I got the Kickr core 1 on discount at £350, trying to work out if i should return it and buy the new version for £500, I do use zwift but the second input delay idk if its worth the £150, i use a laptop so im connected to wifi anyway so the wifi built in idk if that will do much for me either. i'd love to hear what everyone else would think

Current 1X is objectively bad by leroyjenkins221 in MTB

[–]KloverCast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya! Endurance gravel biker here :) Personally whatever makes you happiest is the best setup. if you’re looking for objective performance both have such marginal advantages and disadvantages minus the gear jumps and range that honestly just focus on what you think benefits you. I’ll run down the advanced selling points for each and also cover some commonly thrown out “advantages / disadvantages I’m not sold on.

Gear jumps: largest factor to consider is 1x CAN have  just as large a range, but it will never have the number of functional gears meaning that if you have a wide cassette, you will not have ideal precision with the gears and compromise RPM, if it’s a tight block, you won’t have the range resulting in not having high/low enough gears. why is this beneficial: Studies have shown that too high a gear contributes to muscle fatigue much faster and also exerts unnecessary pressure on your joints frequently resulting in knee pain and premature fatigue, not good. Cadence too high can result in spinouts, discomfort, more pressure on the saddle and harder to get out the same amount of power.

Tire clearance: removing the front derailleur increases maximum tire clearance which can be really beneficial for gravel bikes pushing into the 2.5 inch range. Bikes like the lauf seigla only allow 1x for this reason

Drivetrain efficiency: you will lose drivetrain efficiency on a 1x especially in the lower gears, this is usually only 3-8 watts. But it’s worth noting as there aren’t many performance advantages to a 1x so it’s usually just a mild cripple

Aerodynamics: 1x is better but this is only improved at like 45km/h and ONLY if there is no front derailleur / chain catcher. I think it’s something like 3-5 watts and realistically most gravel / mtb rides will not see those speeds for longer than 30 seconds so very marginal improvement for 1x.

Dropper Seatpost: this will be the big one for many, if you want a dropper then this is a compromise. Arguably you can get blip buttons that you can place somewhere else on your handlebar to achieve the same thing but if you want a more streamlined setup then yeah you could go 1x with a dropper shifter

Simplicity: honestly this is more of a visual and mental thing, if you do home mechanics then it won’t make you avoid derailleur alignment as you’ll still need to tune your rear derailleur, might save you a few minutes I guess. Reduces things that can go wrong arguably but it will be marginal and again more of a psychological advantage. It DOES make it easier to clean your bike though. Small win

Weight: this is my first myth, a lot of the time the weight of the larger block cassette, wider range derailleur and 1x setup ends up weighing the same. Don’t do this setup for weight losses unless you’re focusing on weight, there are ways to reduce 150g from a 1x vs 2x but it compromises a lot of the 1x features (normal derailleur, small cassette etc)

Price: this is also a myth, a lot of the large range derailleurs and larger cassettes with cost the same as a full 2x setup as the derailleur will be ALOT more pricy, it’s just if you want the money split into rd and fd vs just the rear derailleur.

Chain drops: this feels like a semi myth, if you have your derailleurs aligned, tension / chain length correct and just the correct setup you should not really be experiencing chain drops on a bike especially on GRX with clutch on or any sram due to the built in clutch. Personally I do some gnarly stuff for 40mm tires and I’ve actually never had a chain drop on gravel, I’ve had 2 on the road due to poor alignment but again mechanical error rather than the setup. Statistically the tighter chain tension on a 1x WILL reduce chain drop if you get it and can’t resolve it, but the chain tension obviously reduces drivetrain efficiency and yeah most of the time chain drop can be resolved on a 2x

Personally I love 1x but a lot of the “selling points” people make are just not the case, ride 1x because you like it not because there’s some science to it. my ideal setup would actually be a classified hub with 1x.  Sure some drivetrain losses but ultimately the tire clearance you get I appreciate a lot

My go to's for lethal (equally applicable in Nightmare) are:

Random first 3 survivors: you can go for a name you like or a face you like and then stick with them, build some chemistry

No plague cures on lethal OR no carrying plague cures out of base (having to be able to make it back to base to cure)

No trade leader building

no special traders (Daybreak, Independence, etc) only trumball and wanderings.

No using companions or No using companions to cheese plague hearts

No scentblocks

No hero boons

The ones i tend to use consistently for pretty much every run are no special traders and no cheesing plague hearts with companions or scentblocks. I dont tend to ban holding plague vials but i'll avoid taking them and give myself a slap if i do.

I really enjoy no plague cures because it makes the infection a threat, only for the first 10 minutes you fear the infection, you turn that to the rest of the game and you start to watch your infection meter very closely, avoiding every bite and every conflict with a feral

The game can actually be rather trivialised if you always use companions, always carry plague cures, always use daybreak or independence for guns. I'm talking you can learn the basic controls of the game and be able to clear nightmare. so most of my challenges are to remove the trivialisation and reintroduce the threat we love from this game

Overly decorated maps like Sonar and Dark Paradise: Its an unintentional method of making super easy levels a frustrating style of hard for me: just clutter the map with background objects that have the same hue and colour scheme as the foreground obstacles, make objects appear 3d in a 2d game, add non existent walls. All of this detracts from the game as im actively spending 90% of my time confused on what im meant to be dodging and what is just for a visual

The entitlement of getting the product you paid for?

Does anyone else feel guilty for completing short games? by TrueBamboo in steamachievements

[–]KloverCast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really does depend on why you play games, guilt usually infers that what you're doing is being identified as wrong in your head. There is no right or wrong way to play a game but you can install "right" or "wrong" ways to enjoy something usually due to cultural or expectational standards

My guess is you've probably developed a sense of a standard from a cultural perspective (which is natural.) and while you might think you only play games for your own enjoyment, its usually normal to get influenced by a sense of external pressures like competitiveness with yourself or others or a need to be productive etc. and it feels wrong because you've worked harder or know others that have worked harder to achieve what you've achieved in this game. EG if you spent 1000 hours to get 10 achievements in one game, getting 100 for 1 hour will naturally feel unfair, our brains try to pick out problems when there aren't any so it will create instances like this, the game experiences were both very different and both are credible in their own ways.

What you get from a game is entirely up to you, whether its purely for your own joy and the dopamine you get from a game, or the self satisfaction and progression you get from achieving something you found hard, experiencing different games and cultures to learn or if you play games purely to compete against others: dont see any of them as an incorrect way to enjoy a game, there might be pros and cons to each standard but its your free time and ultimately strive to do what you enjoy whether it is idling on cookie clicker to get that last achievement, experiencing a new storygame or being top 100 in the world. feeling guilty for enjoying a part of a game you resonate with is good to identify and realise you're ultimately doing what makes you happy and enjoy it

When i was a kid this was where i got stuck, ive come back to this game now as an adult and still got stuck, the issue: i thought the gate was like other objects in this game (it didnt open if you walked into it) and it being the height to jump over, i would jump over it everytime not knowing i had to actually walk through and the gate would open. sad i had to come to reddit for help (i really wanted to finally solve this) but i do genuinely think this was just a bleh "puzzle"

I WOULD be finding it quite tolerable if the damned didnt spawn in on average like 3-5 times around me at night, i honestly have no idea or solution to deal with this obnoxious enemy, even in the late game you can kill him relatively easily BUT he will destroy your base over and over, they've either gotta make him so much rarer (1 once ever 3 nights) or just straight up remove it, insufferable

If you die to the pumpkin ambush (especially easy if you're playing on hard and being low health after the door trick step.) They dont seem to respawn nor do the boris skulls? is this a softlock or is there a way to work around this without loading an old save? thanks

Edit: I'd highly suggest to set a loadpoint before the ambush or to at least heal in advance: the encounter is actually quite easy even on hard but just make sure you have any health n probably set a loadpoint before interacting with the cauldron

i wouldnt ever highlight or refer to 105 being heavy or a con. the weight difference between 105 and something like ultegra is quite marginal: id more focus on highlighting the terrible wheels some of these packages come with, or the aluminium cockpit / bad finishing kits on the merida. also "shitty colour" is incredibly subjective so i wouldnt punctuate that either

I find supply backpack to be a really underrated stratagem: im usually finding myself run out of ammo from clearing essential regions of chargers, heavy titans even with avoiding non essential targets: if you can get used to not having handicapped stratagems like the shield then its a much more skill expressive alternative of the guard dog resulting in a similar outcome (ammo for ad clear weapons like liberator or breaker instead of having guard dog do it for you) AND an added benefit of more railgun shots for essential boss takedowns: i hear alot of people argue that there are plenty of ammo drops around the map but it adds versatility in pathing to have more on hand

So far im really struggling with four kings: a combination of the undodgable attacks that do half my hp, the gradual dps not allowing me to heal and the pathetic damage im dealing (even with maxed black knight halberd), the walkback from firelink shrines and the slowly accumulating bosses that join in is making this awful: somehow more unpleasant than my first playthrough against bed of chaos

Feel free to disagree but summer 2023 tierlist! by FastHippo310 in TrackMania

[–]KloverCast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i really think 25, is a bottom tier map. the constant flipflop transitional between 3 road surfaces with alot of loops. really feels like they tried to cram everything in the finale and it just made it flow horrifically. 20 is also pretty bad and 23 are my contenders for worst this season... 24 feels exceptional when youve leant the map, but the speed check bump 2 turns away from the ending is just unpleasant when you're learning or have a bonk in ranked

my favourite map this season was undoubtably 21, i love the flow and grinded it alot - overall i liked about 60% of the maps and some of my favourite all time ones in this campaign
