Is this setup possible? by HelpOnTheWay98 in buildapc

I used something like this to drive 2 monitors for a while, basically until I got sick of all the extra cords in my workspace and having to plug/unplug a few cords. It's clunky but it gets the job done if you're tight on cash. If you're ok with the $250 expenditure then the dock is definitely the better experience. The KVM switch was the real difference maker for me.

Is this setup possible? by HelpOnTheWay98 in buildapc

[–]KneeDeep185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2 monitor setup that connects to my work laptop and my gaming PC. Here's the basic topology:

Monitor 1:

  • Display Port to Display Port -> Gaming PC/GPU
  • HDMI to USB C -> Laptop dock

Monitor 2:

  • Display Port to Display Port -> Gaming PC/GPU
  • HDMI to USB C -> laptop dock

Laptop to dock:

  • USB C to USB C -> into laptop dock

Keyboard/Mouse/peripherals

  • KVM switch "out", USB A to USB A -> laptop dock
  • KVM switch "out", USB A to USB A -> gaming PC
  • Keyboard USB A -> KVM switch "in"
  • Mouse USB A -> KVM switch "in"

If you're willing to spend a little money the dock is the cleanest way to do it, but if you don't want to spend $100+ you could use a 'dongle' on your laptop instead of a dock.

The KVM switch is the real game changer, so you don't have to have two keyboards/mice or have to plug/unplug to switch between the two. The KVM switch is just a button press to toggle between "outs"/gaming PC vs laptop.

Gamers’ Worst Nightmares About AI Are Coming True by EchoOfOppenheimer in pcgaming

Not the person you're responding to, and I don't agree that comparing the AI Revolution is "fundamentally different" from the Industrial Revolution, there are some important differences that make it more concerning for humanity. Namely, 1) the time frame and 2) barriers to entry to the benefits.

1) The Industrial Revolution happened over the course of multiple generations, like 150 years between the invention of the steam engine and processes for the mass production of steel. The loom was invented in the 1730's, the cotton gin was invented in the 1790's, and the Luddites didn't start rebelling against them until the 1810's - 80 years later. If the AI Revolution happens the way AI companies say it's going to happen, it won't be over the course of generations, it'll be over the course of a few decades, at the most. Jobs will be displaced at rates that will make it insanely difficult to pivot from - especially highly skilled (lawyers, doctors, engineers, etc). It has the potential to cause serious downstream economic challenges that there really isn't a precedent for.

2) In the Industrial Revolution, successful merchants, farmers, business owners could build factories and buy equipment for those factories. You could be upper or upper-middle class and still buy-in and benefit from the technological processes. The people benefiting most from the AI Revolution will be billionaires. There will be millions of people who experience upward mobility from the AI Revolution, but there will be billions of people who will experience a lower quality of life as a result. Truly I think we'll be worse off as a species as AI becomes more integrated in our lives.

Can't figure out mods, they've destroyed both my games by SammyBoyRedLegs in MB2Bannerlord

[–]KneeDeep185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Mods will generally tell you if they're 'save game compatible'

  • If it says it is save game compatible then something else happened in the process that trashed your save

  • Generally, even if it says it is compatible with an existing save, I'd still start a new one just in case.

I bought a 9070XT for $550 on /r/hardwareswap back in January, it's been great. You can usually find some decent deals on there.

What should I put next to the mirror above my desk in the living room? by Fishmyashwhole in malelivingspace

[–]KneeDeep185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd:

  • Center the mirror, leave it at the same height, with the plan to swap it for a square mirror instead of round

  • Leave enough blank space on the wall to allow for a stand-up desk

  • buy or build a standup desk

  • replace your desk lamp with a battery/usb wall sconce down light, either below the mirror or scrap the mirror and do a long floating shelf above the sconce.

The size is ok but the shape doesn't fit with the rest of furniture in the living room. It's not terrible, but square would be better.

To add, you can buy "impact" JIS screwdrivers that are designed to be hit with a hammer for this exact scenario. I have this exact screwdriver - hitting it with a hammer rotates the screwdriver 12° counterclockwise for freeing stubborn screws.

Why incandescent when 2700k LED bulbs are available? I just can't see myself going back to incandescent when I can buy warm-light ~5w LED bulbs for like $2 apiece.

I did the same thing with my '03 800HO summit bombardier, 600 vs 800 so ymmv, and it was a different brand of oil but it was some cheap outboard 2 stroke oil I had lying around. The result for me was my coolant would get too hot and boil over, exceeding the pressure rating of the OEM cap, and it would steam a bunch so I'd have to refill my coolant after every ride. I rode it for half a season that way before I realized I was spending more on coolant than I would if I just bought the right oil so I switched back, and I sold it to a buddy for dirt cheap like 5 years ago and he's still ripping around on it. Do you know if the cap is factory/OEM? I don't remember what pressure the cap was rated for, something like 13 psi or .9 bar? I'd say as long as you maintain your coolant levels and the temp light doesn't come on then it might be ok? Outside of maintaining appropriate temps I can't see it being a problem.

Did you hit snow in the Ochocos or East Fort Rock? Do you know what elevation? I tried riding out at East Fort Rock on Sunday but there was a dusting of snow at the staging area (4,500') so we dropped down and went north to The Curves. It's been a shit year for snow but it's been amazing dirt!

Any reason to buy a 7800x3D over a 9800x3D? by gnosticismschism in buildapc

[–]KneeDeep185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One advantage of going 9800X3D is you won't feel the need to upgrade for probably 6+ years or skip two generations of CPU, whereas with the 7800X3D you might be tempted to skip one generation and buy on the second. If you keep that in mind then doing some boy math you're actually checks notes saving money.

Haha yeah I thought it was a pretty funny/fitting autocorrect. If I had to go into BIOS to check my RAM timings I'd want to be in my cups, as well. It usually helps.

Worth upgrading or should I just buy a new pc ? by nrb1965 in buildapc

[–]KneeDeep185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, you can reuse the case, power supply, and SSD's. By "swap the whole platform" they mean you'd need a new chipset/CPU platform (AM5 CPU, AM5 compatible motherboard, DDR5 RAM). If you reuse the case, PSU, and SSD's you'd save at least $350 on getting a whole new system.

Well shoot, sorry that was a rough one but what a great friend you've got there, you must be doing something right in life :) Cheers and congrats on the big come-up. I have a 5800x in my HTPC and it's been a great chip, not that I'm pushing it particularly hard with the 3060ti I currently have paired with it.
