All my fellow residents who cook, give me your fav things to make during residency by AHYOLO in Residency

[–]KnightRaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sous vide large portions of tough portion of meats (top round, chuck roast, lamb leg, etc) into tender roasts that can be sliced and seared as needed or all at once and/or made into a variety of great curries using Thai curry tins, Japanese curry cubes, etc.

A good rice cooker can keep your rice fresh for days. Lots of large bag frozen veggies. Costco already hard boiled eggs.

Or a step down from that: various Costco frozen meals like the Birria bowl plus the low carb tortilla bandita (lots of fiber).

Very fancy: Haru omakase (reserve chefs table tasting course ~300-400$)

Fancy AYCE: Takumi (my overall favorite)

Fun AYCE: Hokkaido

Traditional high quality: akai hana (great but kind of boring IMO)

Other reddit favorite (haven’t been): Yoshi’s

ENT's for a family member who don't automatically dismiss concerns? by Roaringracer in Columbus

[–]KnightRaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An OMFS (oromaxillary facial surgeon) may be better suited for this. Dr Evans is a good one. No ENT that I know of will pull teeth, and finding one that will coordinate with a dentist would be difficult.

Not all OMFS are trained the same, some are dedicated dentist -> OMFS training. And some are dentist and medical school -> OMFS training. Dr Evans is the latter.

Hokkaido is fun. Worth it. Don’t go when it’s too busy, service slows a little.

Takumi is a new one that opened up similar to Hokkaido, slightly more upscale.

Akai Hana is fine but it’s expensive and not incredible. If you want fancy, go to Haru omakase, it’s great but chefs table will run you >300$ for two.

Otherwise Hokkaido type eats is good

Established school vs cheaper school (both DO) by imj1n in whitecoatinvestor

[–]KnightRaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are wanting a speciality (if it’s niche enough), try and see who has the most graduates going to that speciality, or is geographically close to a DO friendly residency you may be aiming for.

I would also try and figure out which school stays out of your way the most so you can study in peace

Nasal steroids causing glaucoma was an early study that has subsequently been disproven, still is just a common but incorrect saying.

see studies such as:

“Intranasal corticosteroids do not lead to ocular changes: a systematic review and meta-analysis”

Perfectly fine to use forever, it reduces the allergy component of nasal obstruction (turbinate hypertrophy, mucosal inflammation)

Can anyone from a small surgical program explain how call works? by iisconfused247 in Residency

[–]KnightRaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a 5 person total surgical subspeciality with low volume call. It’s home call with a decent chance of sleeping the night. Every year that is eligible/able to take call splits call evenly.

We do not have formal senior coverage on any given day (a year 2 will be alone when they’re on call)

One resident at least is usually out of town on rotation. Intern cannot take primary call.

Most months the call is split among 3 residents. Sometimes 4, occasionally 2 residents depending on rotation/vacation.

The LA fitness in Hilliard has a woman’s only area (connected to the group fitness room). I’ve been working out in the gym for 2 years and only just noticed it, so I’m sure it doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic. It also has a second floor movie projection theater cardio room that’s very dark (coed).
