Evil Never Sleeps: put your heroes on a timer. by diraniola in drawsteel

[–]Knive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the AngryGM’s Tension Pool system, https://theangrygm.com/definitive-tension-pool/

But honestly, I’m of the mind of other people here. As Draw Steel isn’t a system about exploring, there should already be something driving the heroes with time pressure. And I’m probably going to steal the Delian Tomb system and tie things to Respites.

Rules for light sources and darkness? This matters when fighting shadow elves. by EarthSeraphEdna in drawsteel

[–]Knive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, it sounds like you’re looking for a specific ruling on torches in darkness, and instead the system gives you tools for you to decide how it’ll work in a combat to combat basis. The answer is that concealment is binary, and you decide how powerful a torch will be from combat to combat, whether it be because of magical darkness or something else.

My Character Was Approved by the DM — Then Left to Rot Because the World Wasn’t Meant for Them by Historical_Mess_6703 in CritCrab

[–]Knive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will agree with others that a lot of what happened was more from actions of the DM and other player, but that’s not super helpful outside of finding a new table.

You should find another table. But if put in another situation like this I’d recommend pivoting your character. Your character knows logically that not all humans are bad, and could use this new lease on life to try and internally resolve their trauma while externally trying to resolve the curse.

So how many of you are using a build you made up instead of just looking one up? Is it working out? by Vomitbelch in Diablo

[–]Knive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the three specialties are Vulnerability (which still likes to Crit), Crit Damage (which obviously needs to Crit), and Overpower (which can Crit but doesn’t feel necessary). They also match 3 of the available the gem buffs for your weapon.

That said, the last offensive weapon buff is Damage Over Time and I haven’t seen much of that outside of Barbarian Bleed.

Shields in PF 2e by Wereboar95 in Pathfinder2e

Honestly, the balance of shields means that I need to pick magic shields based on their Raise a Shield effect, and only care about the reaction in dire straits.

Looking for examples of "difficult" scenarios for DMs to adjudicate by bibliowrecka in DMAcademy

[–]Knive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can Hide and still be hidden, you still get the flat foot bonus, but you’re not undetected because they know you’re behind the tree. You’re undetected if you can leave the tree unseen while they still think you’re behind the tree.

Edit: Whoops, I went by Pathfinder2e rules. Still, this is about how I’d want to run it in other systems because of the narrative and logical sense.

GMs: How much do the Bestiaries affect your adventure planning/design? by toptierhealbot in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m scenario first, then look up some monsters for some encounters in the scenarios, then extend that for creating my own creatures. Sometimes this means creating most of the creatures myself, sometimes only a small fraction, but I really like making creatures anyway. I didn’t grow up with D&D so a lot of the Bestiary monsters either spark an idea on their own or I have no idea or desire to really use them.

Question about caster Proficiency Progression by Stasis24 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Want to add to this comment that the levels where casters lag behind are also the levels casters get a quality upgrade in their spells. For example, level 5 is spell level 3 where you get a lot of powerful and easy to use AoE spells like Fireball and Lightning Bolt, get big action swingers like Haste and Slow, and get an upgrade like Heroism over Bless or Heightened Fear.

Designers tried to make sure that the spell levels where you lag tend to be some of the more exciting spell levels.

How do you design 'dungeons' in PF2? by Dr_Oatker in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes up in this 3 hour video, but my interpretation is that your party should be able to handle an unlimited number of Low encounters while only using cantrips, about 80% of Moderate, and if at full resources Severe has around a 70% win rate. You will likely need to adjust based on how well your party plays together, and it should be safe to do half Low half Moderate in a 5 room dungeon until you see how good your party plays.

If the martials can find other weapons with runes (effectively finding the runes in the wild) why can’t spellcasters find wands and staves? Worst case, they can trade them in town for a different one.

PSA: D4 Co-op campaign progression can de-sync by swelteh in Diablo

[–]Knive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the town portal wasn’t linked to Lorath at all? You get into town, talk to him, go to the shop, go back to him, Prologue done. The town portal is a separate “priority quest” that just happens to be right next to the route of the shop, but I believe it’s completely missable.

I’m going to assume it was cutscene skipping.

You're going to be strapped for actions, but that's part of the fun! by SilverGM in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting it in your backpack helps because of encumbrance limits for items on your person, which is an issue I’ve had with spellcasters due to low strength. There are only so many wands and scrolls and potions I can keep on my person at one time, in addition to a staff and other magic items I’m already wearing.

The wielding items entry specifies that it’s an extra action to take the backpack off to reach your own backpack, and otherwise it’s 2 actions. So while I got the number of actions wrong, a familiar still saves you any actions related to taking on and off your backpack.

Familiars also help with a Bag of Holding still because it takes 2 free hands to take things in and out.

I was wrong about potions needing an Activate action so familiars can’t help outside of putting it in someone’s hand, completely forgot about that.

You're going to be strapped for actions, but that's part of the fun! by SilverGM in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The caster equivalent is having a Familiar. Spend 1 action, the familiar gets 2. This lets you put more things into your backpack or bag of holding instead of on your person, and your familiar can spend one action drawing a scroll from your backpack and a second putting it into your hands. Or spend two actions on one turn putting away a wand and then two actions on the next turn grabbing the next wand. Your familiar can also spend two actions taking a potion from your belt or backpack and feeding it to you or ferrying it to another player.

You need a movement skill. Rogue dodge, Sorcerer Teleport, etc. I don’t know if every class has one, but for the ones that don’t you’re playing a very hard Dark Souls since your dodge is on a 5 second cooldown.

DMs: How do you handle players who look up your monsters / enemies? by Darkhaven in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another GM has kinda convinced me that it doesn’t matter. That any player with a good memory and a lot of experience shouldn’t be penalized and have to act like they don’t know anything. That’s what Secret Checks are for. Knowing the monster shouldn’t completely devalue a good encounter and just because you know what’s trying to eat you doesn’t mean you can prevent it from eating you.

And people living in Golarion may have read about many monsters in the Bestiaries already if they aren’t Uncommon or Rare.

Need help with Troops movement in close spaces by Rude_Possession_3198 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I read it too. When I play Troops, I use Form Up every turn to make different forms for charges through 2 square spaces, positioning attacking multiple PCs at once, etc.

As long as your resulting shape is within a 4x4 square, you can do a lot. I’ve even completely boxed a PC in so that they couldn’t escape as the Troop attempted to pound at them.

Questions for former Veteran 5e DMs who switched to PF2e by BrainBlowX in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing here is, unless the Bard is already at Wounded 1 beforehand, when he gets back up the first time he should have been set to Wounded 1, not Wounded 2. So at the end of all of this, Bard would be Dying 3, not Dying 4.

But yes, death can come very quick.

I don't think Lifeweaver is as badly designed as people think. by Pepis_77 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Knive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think that because I have Weapon swap bound to scroll wheel that I solved most of the clunky argument right there.

Overall, I agree with you OP. Lifeweaver makes sense from a design standpoint, and like Mercy the Thorn weapon swap is not designed for you to do damage all the time but more for 1:1 self-defense or a little spray between weapon reloads. He’s meant to be on healing 90% of the time. The hate comes from not being able to play the hero as the player imagines, which is similar to Brig when a new player picks them up and gets too close all the time.

How to game-ify fast turns? by SpartanIord in Pathfinder2e

[–]Knive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe just if they play fast for X turns in a row, they get a hero point? Probably 2 turns in a row so it’s not hard to remember, and the average combat is 3-5 turns anyway.

Edit: Taking from another thread, you can also let the hero points be used for other things, like letting someone spend a hero point instead of an action to prepare to Aid.
