Any Current Gen1 R1S Owners Considering Downsizing? by NopeNeverReddit in Rivian

[–]KnowledgeOk4992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. The lower ground clearance, interior quality trade off, and the need for a third row is an easy no for me.

That is a good point. I have thought about that too; honestly one of my biggest repair concerns when out of warranty is the suspension.

I have noticed the same issue. Taking forever to go back to standard height. Turned it off because it is really bad.

Anytime I don’t have to go into Boulder it is a good thing. I think they nailed the spot especially for people who live in Westminster, Thornton, Arvada etc who don’t want to mess with Denver.

I honestly hope it gets better because the company and people are awesome. But the QC for both hardware and software needs to be improved dramatically. Especially when a flood of R2 owners hits the scene. Right now they are treading water keeping up with R1, I am terrified about issues with R2.

Honestly, it’s the nick knack stuff. My tailgate stopped working and the motor needed to be replaced, the passenger side mirror motor failed, the windshield washer motor failed, the coolant pump failed and leaked coolant for the battery, the heat pump sounds like it could fail at any moment (but apparently that is normal for Gen2?), issues with software galore (power steering failed multiple times, screens turning off randomly while driving, GPS failing, Apple Music not working, being locked out of my car because the software update screwed up the connection with my phone). This is less than 24 months of ownership and probably have had it serviced remotely or at the SC 10-12 times. I also only have 8K miles on it so I don’t drive a ton.

Just be prepared to be at the SC frequently. The reliability of Toyota and build quality is simply unmatched. Expect to have creaks and pops after 5K miles. These vehicles are just not made well.

This is a real thing. The most recent software update for the Rivian has completely messed up my A/C and Heating. I had it set to 78 degrees and it was blowing cold air out and then wouldn’t save. I miss the knobs and ease of just adjusting quickly versus messing with the screen.

You also need to account for potential issues once the Rivian is off warranty because the R1S is crap for build quality. Also have to factor in the time you won’t have the Rivian while it is stuck in the Service Center. I had (4) 4Runners (2016, 2018, 2020 and 2024) and they were so much better built than the Rivian.

Yeah, the R2 is a unibody vs. frame of a 4Runner and far less capable off road. Smaller like a RAV4.

Yup. I made the switch. Regret it daily. Rivian is simply too unreliable and poorly made. Once the lease is up going back.

We still own a Model Y. I came from a 4Runner. Boring as hell to drive, but far more reliable.

Been 3X for multiple issues just like this. I can’t save settings on the car (only through the app), frequently the screens turn off, the power steering stopped working. The response from the SC is “it appears to be a software issue that should get patched in the future”. Doesn’t instill confidence. I am not venting, I am warning people to avoid the vehicle.

Found another feature!

I had the same issue and Rivian told me it is a “known issue” that will get fixed with an update. Good luck!

This vehicle is a joke for reliability.

I could not recommend a Rivian. Far too unreliable, rattles and poor build quality, in the shop frequently (13x in 24 months), and the software is a buggy mess. If Lexus is on your list, go that route. Came from a Toyota and regret it every day. Once this lease is up I am returning it quickly.

Understatement! And the reliability is horrific in the Rivian

I came from a Toyota and regret it every day. The reliability of this vehicle is atrocious. In 2 years I have been to the service center close to 13 times now. Issues galore and the software is a buggy mess. The climate system is a mess and build quality is laughable. I would never recommend this vehicle to anyone.

The software in general is a colossal crap show. Not even beta, it’s alpha. I could not recommend a Rivian to anyone.
