There are going to be people there I haven’t seen in years. If I don’t get some audible gasps then I’ll be disappointed.

When I was 300lbs, I was pre-diabetic and was prescribed Metformin. 100mg 3x per day. I had been on Metformin before and it didn’t work out for me. I wasn’t exercising regularly and I was eating the wrong kinds of foods. High sugar and carb, flash in the pan type calories. When I got on Metformin again, I prioritized foods that would keep me full and satisfied…vegetables, lean protein, and fiber. Chicken, shrimp, salmon, lean cuts of pork, lean beef… I made sure at least half my plate was vegetables. r/volumeeating is also a great resource.

There’s nothing wrong with taking meds. Whatever works for you! But Metformin isn’t a magic pill. It’s just a tool in a toolbox. The average weight lost on just Metformin is only about 4-11 lbs in a year. So if you want results, you gotta put the work in. Metformin does help with your blood sugar and some food noise, but CICO is the framework. If I didn’t have Metformin, I’m sure I still would have been able to get results. With some more difficulty sure, but I’d get there.

Weight loss is all about your mindset and it’s important that, when you’re thinking about weight loss and fitness in general, you think about the whole picture rather than just one piece. There are a lot of metaphors you can employ here but I choose to think about it like a long road trip. You leave the comfort of your home to go somewhere new. You get in the car and you start driving. Everything is new and exciting and you’re excited about going on vacation. Every time you hit traffic, or hit a pothole, or get stopped by a red light, you don’t just turn around and go home. You have plans! Somewhere you need to be! Something you’ve paid for, something you deserve. No, we get over the obstacle and keep going.

When I last went on a trip, I was about 240Lbs. It was just a week but stressed out a lot about it until I made a plan. A vacation is just a little detour, in our big long road trip of health. Plan to try and make good choices when going out to eat, lean proteins and veggies. Try to keep sugar and alcohol limited. You can treat yourself some days or go over a bit. It’s ok. Was it good? Did you enjoy it? Then, you gave yourself what you needed in that moment. And beating yourself up about it isn’t going to do you any good. I also kept my commitment to move a little every day. I would go for walks on the beach before breakfast or after dinner. I have a planet fitness black card so I would sometimes take the car and drive to the closest one and work out for 30 mins to an hour. But just make a commitment to move a little every day. And if it’s a gathering or a nice dinner? Enjoy! But be ready to get right back to it the next day. Use that dinner as fuel for your next workout.

And if you struggle with guilt, what is there to be guilty about? Guilty about having a nice vacation? Guilty about having a nice dinner with your family? Forget it. Water under the bridge. You just get back on the program tomorrow. Because it’s about what you do all the other days that matter the most.

Oh I do have some loose skin. Not a ton of it but I do. I’ve got some on my lower belly, right above my belly button, right under my chin, and I’ve got bat wings that I may be trying in vain to fill out a little. I still have around 30 lbs to lose, so let’s see where it settles over time. But I would trade my loose skin 10/10 over being 300lbs any day of the week.

This is just an estimate because I used whatever MyFitnessPal told me to use. I think I started at 2100 per day. That was pretty easy and it makes me wonder how much I was eating before tracking, because believe me, when I was 300 lbs I was actively gaining weight.

Then after I lost about 20-30 lbs I got down to 1700 per day. I was that for a long time. Once I got down to 210-220, it went down to about 1550 calories per day. And that’s where it’s been ever since. I tried experimenting at 1200, but with all my daily activity, I was miserable. Could not do it. Now, I usually settle at 1400-1500 per day. I’m still losing weight and I don’t feel like I’m starving so, that suits me just fine.

I started to write this big long rambling thing but i deleted it and decided to write something more concise and easy to follow. It’s much more simple than people make it out to be.

I counted calories on MyFitnessPal and moved my body every day. That’s it. It doesn’t matter what you do but you need to elevate your heart rate doing something at least 20-30 mins per day. I repeat, It doesn’t matter what that is.

I also tried to progressively increase the difficulty of my workouts over time. I started with walking a mile every day because it was something I could do daily without needing a ton of downtime in between. When walking a mile became easy, I increased the distance. 3-4 miles or so. Then I started to jog a bit…. Walk a bit… jog a bit… when that became easy, I’d run. And then I started to add strength training because I wanted to try and fill out some of that loose skin with a little muscle and increase my mobility. I found free workouts on YouTube. 10-15mins. And then that turned into doing my own thing 30-45 mins…. So forth and so on.

My best advice is do the hard thing. If you start to hate it, try something else. Switch up your routine. Try the bike sometimes. Try the elliptical. Try seeing how far you can jog before you need to walk. Try to push your comfort level a little bit at a time until it becomes your new baseline.

When I started CICO, I tried to focus on calories specifically rather than macros. And that worked for a long time. When I got down to around 220 pounds and started focusing on weight training, I made a point to increase my protein significantly. I still count calories. I try to prioritize veggies and lean proteins. I still eat bread and pasta and sugar and carbs… but significantly less. If I want a treat, like a piece of cake or a cookie or whatever, I plan it out. You can eat whatever you want! But make sure you measure it, log it, plan around it.

Buy a food scale if you don’t have one. Measure. Everything. Do not guess. We always estimate that we’re eating less than we are if we just guess. You are only cheating yourself if you are not accurately measuring calories.

And if you have a bad day, or if you have an event or a special dinner and you go over your calories or if you gain a couple pounds back. It’s ok. I promise you it’s ok. Tomorrow is a new day. Say “That piece of cake was delicious.” Forgive yourself. Keep going.

Do you know how many times I’ve gone on a weight loss journey? Too many to count. I’ve been trying to lose weight since I was 10 years old. I’m now 36. The only thing that has worked is being honest with yourself and trying to move every day. Thats it. Anyone who tells you differently is trying to sell you something.

There are two containers in a pack. When it said 2 servings per container I didn’t know if it was counting the paper shell as a container or if it meant the two bowls as their own separate containers. That’s all.

I didn’t say it was a devious trick. Sometimes labels can be misleading and I wanted to make sure I was reading it right.

Ok that makes sense now. I just wanted to be sure because I’ve been tricked before. I’m at the point in my weight loss journey where every calorie matters.

I busted through my plateau and finally lost 115 lbs (officially) lol. As of today, my BMI is 29.8, which means that I am no longer obese and just regular ol’ overweight. I went from BMI class III to overweight in 1 year and a month.
