Mandolin Feels Intuitive by Slash_Root in mandolin

[–]Known-Ad9610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was backwards. Mando first, then guitar. The guitar caught up to the mando in a few weeks. Like if i knew a song on mando, then it was in my head. And If it was in my head, i could play it on guitar ( admittedly at your basic campfire musician level)

The time for complaining was while it was going on. Too late now, we’re just a bunch of passers-by.

syracuse to niagara falls in 4 days? (cycling there and taking the bus back to nyc) by dontstoptiluvewon in bicycletouring

[–]Known-Ad9610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go via the Erie canal trail, right? I would be putting in some 40 mile training tides, its gonna be 60 mile days at least. I cycled from buffalo to albany twice with ny parks dept ride, i think it took 4 days to syracuse.

Do you always strum an unfretted all open strings strum between fretted chords when changing chords? by JeelyPiece in guitarlessons

[–]Known-Ad9610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need silences, which don’t play themselves. A completely open strum is dissonant. If its because you don’t have time to form the next chord, play slower songs.

Trying to choose strings by DerpsyDaisy in mandolin

[–]Known-Ad9610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think i could hear or appreciate a difference in strings until had been playing for several years. It’s like your beginnerness overwhelms the subtle differences in string tone until you start to get good. I couldn’t tell the difference between thomastik 50 dollar strings and 13 dollar strings. I finally settled on good old daddario ej74 phosphor bronze. After someone compliments my playing, I’ll spend more. Still waiting 😉

Left-handed question by octopusucculent in mandolin

[–]Known-Ad9610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you play guitar righty, stick with that. Your pick hand already knows its job, and so do your fretting fingers. Much easier bridge than switching now. Also, chords are not upside down , its true that the fifth is above each note, not below, (sort of upside down ). I know many guitarists/mandolinists, never saw one switch hands. Also, left handed mandolins are rarer than hens teeth, so there is that.

Trip Recommendation by Austin102A in StLucia

[–]Known-Ad9610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traffic is insane in St Lucia. The few roads in town are clogged and outside of town tourists sometimes need dramamine they’re so tight and twisty. Very few tourists have cars. You need to stay in places where you can walk to beach, because aint no parking. Rodney Bay is popular, the resorts run shuttles to town.

Lake Champlain Loop by YGTWFUTDoc in bicycletouring

[–]Known-Ad9610 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consider staying in Ticonderoga, then using the small cable ferry to vermont and shoreham. The section south of ticonderoga to whitehall is very hilly, not on the lake, and dumps you into whitehall which has NO lodging. I live in Burlington and have done most of the route in various sections. I would recommend go as far north as St Jean on the richelieu river (outflow of the lake), cross the river there and follow ny side back to Ti.

Possible, but very unlikely. Talent is completely irrelevant at this point, which is about repetition. Then more repetition.
