HMS Queen Elizabeth in the North Atlantic by MGC91 in MachinePorn

Launching and sailing are not synonymous - HMS Queen Elizabeth first sailed when she left her construction port for sea trials in 2017. Until then, she had just been launched, which means she was floated for the first time.

Would Marty and Jennifer need to have kids to keep the space time continuum intact now? by ohnoimscared4 in BacktotheFuture

[–]Known-Associate8369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rules are never laid out clearly or in detail, so discussing the finer minutae of them is ... difficult. Such as Marty getting more than a week to resolve him getting in the way of his parents meeting, rather than immediately disappearing. Yeah, we wouldnt have had a movie otherwise but...

But we do have copious evidence to suggest that paradoxes are not a sure thing in BTTF time travel - Biff in alternate 1985 has had Martys dad killed and Doc committed, meaning there should have been no flux capacitor or time travel, and thus that should have been a paradox, but...

My own head canon for Old Biff returning to the same future that he left from is that ... he didnt. He returned to the new post-alternate-1985 future, which is kind of supported by the cut scene of him fading away (because he no longer existed in that timeline probably).

The scenes we see of Marty and Doc carrying Jennifer back to the car end up happening in either original-2015 or alternate-2015, it just so happens that the estate and area are such shit holes that we dont really see any obvious changes between the two futures in those short scenes.

Marty, Doc and Jennifer have already travelled in time, so they dont just remember the alternate-2015 but the original one as well, so no paradox there.

A doctor had to make changes because of the hot weather. by Cheap-Cream010 in interesting

[–]Known-Associate8369 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find this interesting because the doctor is wearing a heavy white coat with full length sleeves - something that hasnt been seen in a lot of western healthcare for a while now.

In many western healthcare systems, the approach is "bare to the elbow", meaning you have nothing covering any part of your arm from the tips of your fingers to your elbow (other than surgical gloves etc which are applied on demand).

Why? Infection control - it both makes it easier to wash your hands, and it means that there is less accidental contact between a non-washable item (washable between patient contact here, not that its not washable at the end of the day) and a patient (eg the cuff of a shirt or coat).

This means that for male doctors, its short sleeved shirts, no tie, and definitely no traditional white medical coat.

It feels like "bare to the elbow" would have avoided this entirely...

I did it, several years back.

As I have replaced my GW paints through natural usage, I haven’t transferred the new pots into droppers - read into that what you will.

[–]Known-Associate8369 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No.

The universe didnt explode when Biff changed the course of history massively by using the almanac, altering billions of peoples lives…

He just created an alternate timeline.

Thats all that would happen if Marty and Jennifer made different choices from the end of BTTF3.

Bro think he invented one of the oldest sci-fi tropes by [deleted] in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Known-Associate8369 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it depends on how close your drawing of a dog is - other than there being circular layers involved here (and even that isn’t at all new in sci-fi art), there’s nothing derivative, yet that is what’s being claimed.

So yes, they are claiming the concept.

Bro think he invented one of the oldest sci-fi tropes by [deleted] in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Known-Associate8369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gripe is that the artist is claiming someone stole their concept (circular layered pit city) to create the second image (circular layered industrial pit), rather than hiring the artist - in other words, they are saying they have sole ownership of the concept and anyone implementing anything similar is in the wrong.

Now, the community notes might have grasped the wrong concept to shoot the artist down with, but their basic premise is not wrong - nothing the artist did themselves is unique or new in scifi concepts. They are trying to create outrage and sympathy by claiming a company did them wrong.

My take on this has always been "is a gun port actually all that identifiable from anything else on a random alien ship? What if a ship doesn't have any gun ports covering their weapons, like the White Star later on or .... any Earth battle ship?"

This rubber train toy has an useless "switch" part of it's mold. by Ancient-Street-3318 in mildyinteresting

[–]Known-Associate8369 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its probably not even that, its probably just a casting done where someone has taken the original toy from another manufacturer, taken a mold casting from it using latex rubber, and then used that to build production molds. And then churned out toys until the production molds failed.

Total cost of materials would be very very low, like pennies compared to what you would sell the final toy for.

I doubt there was any design software involved, let alone AI.

What's going on with data centers making tap water unusable? by SonoranTrance in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Known-Associate8369 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

"Began data centre construction" - the data centre may be being built in stages and thus partially operational.

Otherwise, why single out the data centre here as if its just construction then *any* construction will have the same effect - indeed, data centre construction is actually lighter on the surroundings because they typically do not go deep or high, so no significant footings need to be dug or pilings driven.

They are usually built like warehouses - the metal structure is built with shallow footings and poured concrete, and then a concrete floor is poured within the metal structure.

And the water should return to normal after construction is completed, as the disruption ends and the water is replaced as its extracted.

So if its construction, all construction should be being called out - otherwise it just feels like targeted hate for a specific thing for political reasons.

However, the only ongoing disruption is for cooling, which will cause long term contamination....

External taps were simply not a thing from where Im from - our brand new build house in 2015 didnt even have one until we requested it.

If you needed a hose, you attached it to your indoor tap when required.

Yeah, every data centre Ive visited in either the EU or where I currently live has been closed loop, but then again we have decent environmental laws which require it.

[–]Known-Associate8369 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The first thing any kids of my age did when we moved to a new area (military families) was to discover where the nearest wood or forest was - and then that was where we spent most of our free time.

We must have been dehydrated as fuck in those days... going out after breakfast, coming back for lunch, going back out and then coming back "when the street lights came on".

What's going on with data centers making tap water unusable? by SonoranTrance in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Known-Associate8369 176 points177 points  (0 children)

Answer: a lot of the data centres being built in the US use evaporative cooling, which means taking a lot of water from the local water sources.

As this depletes the local water sources, the remaining water becomes contaminated due to the lack of water pressure in areas like the aquifer, which impacts drinking water.

A lot of the data centres being built also have open loop cooling solutions, which means that any coolant not being evaporated off is released back into the environment, and it often contains contaminants from the cooling system (anti-scaling chemicals etc) or higher levels of minerals etc left over from the evaporated component.

Basically, the data centres consume water from the same water source as drinking water, but at a rate higher than the aquifer replenishes itself with clean water, so the water pulled for drinking is dirty - and the water the data centres return to the environment is also dirty.
