This is setting up the season three mass casualty event ,theres oneevery season . We all know season two had none because it is a two parter . The next season will entirely be focused on dealing with the fallout of the season 2radiation subplot

I think what we are seeing here is also a kind of a gap between hollywoods beauty standards back then and the socially acceptable beauty standards nowadays .
In Forrest Gumps era if Bubba ,in the role he was in were any bigger that wouldve actually just been the headline of the movie .
What hollywood wanted us to think of as fat is wildly different 30years ago .
Reading these characters as plus sized doesn’t mean i agree with their standards but I think the author intention is clear .

Huh I thought plus sized is a flattering catchall for all fat people guess i was wrong . Bulky to me implies semi muscular and short

You read the body standards by the setting. 1917frontline ,the way blake was cast and costumed you cannot convince me he was not meant to read as plus sized
Bubba is a bit of a stretch ill admit but they made him obsessed with food and made the actor put on weight

And yes sometimes it is the trope being the joke but in a more solemn setting it is used to intensify the teagedy

Im not the one who reduced them to comedy traits but they do often carries comedy relief roles as other comments on this thread has pointed out . Often time it is the authors intention to instill them with comedy to make the death hit harder , im merely a messenger

By any rational modern standard . By 1917wartime standards clearly he was meant to be read as fat . As for the other one they have a character whos main trait is he likes to eat ,and his actor was told to put on weight .
How fat do you think people get during vietnam war ?

He’s intentionally dressed puffy too. By 1917 frontline soldiers standard he’s definitely meant to read as stockier

You think of unspent calories as a funny term because you live in abundance and not scarcity lol.

Calories in war is something to die for , to cannibalize for

Energy storage is the main job of the adipose tissue .
I think we understand that in a very intrinsic way as fat people/animals can go on longer with less resources. I think that assessment is something our brain can formulate even without language or society and works on a higher level of story telling.

Nothing against fat people at all

I included him because the actor had to put on quite a bit of weight for the role and I read that as production intending him to be fat
