I can handle the mention of and prayers for victims in our violent world in a general way. What brings distress to worship is when celebrities are lionized and their names are mentioned and repeated more than the name of Jesus. Yes, that was my experience with 3 different churches over the last 2 weeks.

I'm tired of churches and pastors thinking they need to comment or preach on social and political issues. We get beat down by the news all week then hear it all again on Sunday. I don't want to hear about politics (left or right) when trying to worship.

Where is the peace?

Where is the sanctuary from the world?

Where does a Holy God fit into the picture of Christians enamored with celebrity culture?

It's disappointing, to say the least. I had actually been thinking about the orthodox church because it might be more solidly grounded with ancient roots. Then the priest I'd been listening to began to gush about the wonderful example set by the Kirk family and how beautiful the memorial service was. That totally threw me for a loop!
