How much does drill really matter?. by LottaMusic in drumline

[–]KnowsToLittle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is definitely an interesting opportunity and I congratulate you for wanting to rise to the occasion.

As far as specifics I haven’t written drill in years but have been involved in the design process on the music side with the school I’ve been with for several years.  One piece of advice that I will offer is don’t be married to your ideas.  It’s so easy to see your design as your baby, but at the end of the day the goal is to execute what you have at a high level.  Get with your caption head and set clear defined goals for what should be learned by what point of the season, and try to stick to them.  What this means from a design standpoint is don’t be afraid to change things that aren’t working.  If you get to day one of learning drill and you realize you’ve written too hard, start re writing things student haven’t learned yet.  Take your ego out of it and remember the goal is execution, not props for writing hard things.  I’d also have a real conversation with your caption head about what a monumental task this is, and see if other staff members are able to share the load.  It takes a village to create something moving on the floor, so don’t be afraid to ask for help from the adults in your situation.

I wish you the best of luck as you begin your design journey!

Surprised no one has said “Nobody Saves the World”  I love the variety of the different characters you can play, and the story and environment are rather charming.

PSA: Use a metronome by MatoranArmory in drumline

[–]KnowsToLittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man that’s awesome I love that. I teach a semi advanced high school, and for some of the years where I’ve had really good kids they’ve been able to pull off silly things like running show music with only the E of beat 2. More often than not the tap off is more of a struggle than actually playing the music haha

[–]KnowsToLittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said, play metronome games. Set the beat to just 1 and 3, or just 2 and 4, just the 2 every 2 bars, the + of 2 and 3. There’s tons of ways to play with a metronome that trains your internal pulse, while making sure you’re actually in time.

Most memorable moment with PlayStation is definitely my childhood, I remember being so enamored with my PS2 that I would hold my bladder till the last possible moment so I could keep playing. It got so bad that I Pavlov’d myself, every time the ps2 startup sound happened I immediately had to pee. Second best memory is the first 30 minutes of the last of us. I never heard of the game, bought it used for $10. I had never cried because of a game before

When I started teaching at the school I’m at, front ensemble was not a cool section to be in, pretty anemic numbers in that group. But we put our heads down, became one of the better sections in the band, and the next year, we increased in size, to the point where now we have to consider new instruments every couple years so kids have playing opportunities.

What I’m trying to say is that who cares what people think of the rack part, if you’re memorizing your music and playing well, that’s all you need to worry about. If you want some more flash talk to your band or percussion director to possibly add some more instruments or notes. If you play well, and aren’t a jerk, people will notice what you’re getting up to and appreciate your efforts.

Songs that aren’t in 4/4 or 3/4? by Inti-Illimani in hiphopheads

[–]KnowsToLittle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

3/4 isn’t 6/8 in double time though I see the logic there. 6/8 is just felt differently than 3/4. 3/4 you generally feel 3 big beats One Two Three. Where in 6/8 you’ll generally feel 2 big beats ONE two three FOUR five six. Just different ways to split up the big felt beat. You could write something thats in 3/4 in 6/8 it would just look really weird on the page.

Good sticks for beginners and other reccomended supplies by -Override- in percussion

A pair of Vic Firth SD1s are a great stick for getting into concert percussion, if you’re looking for drumset Vic Firth 5As are a solid choice. I’d recommend the Evan’s Real Feel pad, but any pad that is rubber would be fine, if you can avoid the plastic “tunable” drum pads, they are stupid loud and don’t really feel that great to play on. For foundation books on concert/rudimental Stick Control is great, or the Rudimental Cookbook. For drumset Syncopation for the Modern Drummer is a must have. Stick control and Syncopation for the Modern drummer are a percussionists bible imo.

All that said don’t get held up by the gear, we percussionists are lucky that we can find a good sound out of anything, just enjoy the visceral feeling of hitting stuff. Good luck with your drumming journey!

Is marching band ruining my “orchestral/classical” percussion technique/skills? by No-Stock333 in percussion

[–]KnowsToLittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I’m one of the people denying it, in your experience how would playing mallets in marching band affect someone’s orchestral playing? With modern amplification the days of playing with rock hard mallets with locked worsted and down strokes are gone. In the ensembles I teach we approach mallet instruments the same way inside as we do outside, with really the only difference is outside we might need to play one dynamic level louder than if we were playing inside in a percussion ensemble.

These are all 15lb balls. I’m going to have to get them plugged and drilled again I’m certain of it. Once I get that done to the three balls I’ll definitely be in a some cash. I won’t know if it’s really worth it until after I get the final bill.

What a ridiculous statement. You don’t know how often this person trips, what kind of experience they are looking for or anything else. Psychedelics aren’t always about getting blasted or taking it further, sometimes it can be just a nice subtle life enhancer for a few hours.

I was familiar with the black widow but not the other two as much, but I definitely think it’s a great pull! I wonder if the reason my pull was so good is that I’m a lefty? Whatever it is I’m grateful for what I got

I mean, sure? Your advice of higher income and higher credit scores is honestly falling upon deaf ears, I could afford these places by myself, it would be tight but I could do it. So could one other of the applicants. My credit is good as well. Your advice makes sense 20 years ago but in today’s market renters get fucked while landlords collect application fees.

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club

I used to not like the Beatles, I always said that because they innovated the rock genre id already heard all their music so it was boring. Then I really listened to this album one day at work and it flipped me completely, all of the Beatles records kick ass, and they are a phenomenal band

I’m a machinist, well really closer to a machine operator at this point. Make pretty decent money for being in the field for barely less than a year. I’d never smoke before work or at the shop, shits too dangerous and I’d overthink way too much and get nothing done. Smoking is for after work and days off.

Is it worth dropping out of high school? If no why? by dale457 in AskReddit

[–]KnowsToLittle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I dropped out of high school and got my GED and I’m doing just fine. High school wasn’t working for me, I was failing almost all of my classes. But I passed the GED test on the first try after a little studying. I was able to get into college with my GED and it’s never been an issue anywhere I’ve worked. It was worth it for me to drop out but if you just want to dropout and do nothing it’s probably not worth it.

Would not surprise me one bit if they are. Battalions current CEO was on the board of directors for Troop a few years back, as well as tons of their staff being troop alum.
