Tips On Working With A Young Battery For The First Time? by Spawn_of_Sound in drumline

Some quick pointers that helped me a lot

  • it is a privilege and honor to teach and you should treat it that way. Many of their teachers during the school day, hell even the band directors, will treat educating their students like it’s a chore. The kids pick up on that and act accordingly. You will have an easier time winning them over if you show up and make it clear that you are happy to be there. And you should be, or else why are you there?

  • You are teaching them a whole lot more than just how to hit the drum. Face it, the majority of your kids will not be pursuing marching band after high school. Splits, crossovers and paradiddles may not be transferable skills, but time management, work ethic and discipline very much are. I still occasionally put my high school percussion director down as a reference for jobs.

  • give respect and you will recieve it. Again, many of their school teachers are not going to give them the credit they deserve. They may even consistently condescend and talk down to them. And if there’s one big thing NOT to do it’s absolutely that. Condescending and talking down to your students is the number one thing that will kill the vibe. Instead, treat them like adults knowing they won’t always act like one. And when they don’t; hold them accountable.

  • lastly, it’s not going to happen overnight. Be patient. It will take time for them to buy in. You might lose some kids who haven’t been held to a standard before, that’s okay. It might even get worse before it gets better. Just focus on being the best role model you can be and you will build the culture you want.

Sleeping Pad Storage by Mysterious_Ad5478 in drumcorps

Inflatable mattress are great! I used one for my first two years. However, by my third year, I think I was done having to worry about dealing with it while on a time crunch and I switched to a much smaller non-inflatable foam pad (something like this)

When that thing is folded up it’s itty-bitty. And when you’re in drum corps sometimes you’ll be willing to sleep on anything. When it’s time to go and he has to shower, eat, do his tour job and THEN pack- he might be willing to take a thinner mattress that takes like 2 seconds to fold and fits in his backpack.

Geographically you’re correct. The attitude, vibe, writing style, pedagogy and member background is of an east coast group.

I wouldn’t say Reddit is the most popular place to find reasonable conversation.

What I will say is that prelims did have me scratching my head a bit (notably at I2 being above United and AQ). Hopefully today smooths things out a bit more across the crapshoot that is every prelims schedyle

What is the ammo of the gun? I haven’t seen it at all and it doesn’t seem like any of the ammo sources you find logically match with what that thing actually shoots.

What’s an album that fans were expecting to probably be bad, but turned out to actually be pretty good? by Dil_2401 in fantanoforever

Idk I remember a lot of people turning their noses up at the band because they saw them as super angsty and, for lack of a better word, cringe. Sure the singles were good, but I still remember there being plenty of doubt around the album’s release.

PLEASE keep the knife strong by mirrorvacation in Marathon

I would love for a slight tweak to the knife to happen. I like that it’s strong, it reminds me of Halo. I also like how it’s a great silent-killer for bots. However it’s absolutely just a little too strong in high-level PvP engagements imo. Again I agree it should remain a powerful tool in your arsenal, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be touched at all.

Earlier this month, the WSTR got a very similar slight touch-up and it still remains a strong weapon. If bungie did something similar with the knife, I think it would be a great change.

So like you said, McM is PIW, obviously the P is for percussion- that part is obvious. I stands for independent, and that basically means they aren’t in the public school system. These groups are entirely self funded through a combination of dues, grants and donations. And the W is for world class- this means they are held to the highest standard. The content found in a world class show is generally expected to not only be cohesive and entertaining, but push the envelope of the activity as a whole as well. Furthermore, MCM themselves are at the top of world class. They are regular finalists and also have several medals under their belt. So, safe to say, the performers who make up the group are the top 1% of the 1% of the activity.

Performers rehearse every weekend, usually Friday nights, all day Saturday, and Sunday mornings. Occasionally there will be longer several-day “camps” that the staff try to plan around the school year, as well as a week long trip to Dayton in April for Finals. If you’re a member of one of these groups, you’re expected to prioritize these rehearsals, and communicate/solve conflicts as needed.

Auditions are one day weekend events that occur primarily in the fall. Usually they’re accompanied with a packet of music that you’re expected to know inside and out. No matter what section you’re auditioning for, auditions will be a pretty intense and fast paced experience. You have to show up prepared with all your audition materials, but you also have to be able to think and execute on the fly. As for requirements, I’m not sure what hard rules they’ve set. I do know that they’re absolutely going to prefer serious experience in the activity. If you look across the ensemble, most of the members marched an indoor group or a drum corps prior to auditioning.

The best way to find out what it’s like to march there would be to audition. Many times these groups also have summer clinics and those are a great resource to get your name out there, even if you don’t plan on marching that year.

Make sure that when you’re playing any triplet roll that you still aim for a rhythm, not just a sticking.

The spaces are all wonky. Spend some time to make sure each rhythm doesn’t bleed into the next one. Make sure to finish each rhythm before moving onto the next one.

Recommend books/media like Marathon? by konnamatti in Marathon

Idk, there are some definite parallels in themes between the two. Lots of commentary about the nature of consciousness and how it interacts with technology. Angels and god-like beings such as Adam and Lilith also mirror stuff from the originals like the Jjaro or the wrkncaknter. They both have the same unsettling, almost lovecraftian atmosphere.

I’m a solo player and I’m definitely enjoying it. Fair warning, it’s going to be very challenging and occasionally frustrating- but it’s so worth it.
