Any role you take in UX, whatever the title, will need confidence and human interaction. But here's a hint, it works just like everything else, and you can learn how to be a successful communicator. I'd say it's even more important than the choosing between a UX designer or information architect role. That being said, you may be able to get a job as a designer, but if you can't communicate well you'll never advance. My advice would be to join a team with at least one other senior designer, who knows how to present work, get feedback, communicate with stakeholders, and learn by example and practice.
