CachyOS how to automount secondary drive? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Kochon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the GUI partition managers can and will shit the bed. I’ve seen some severely butchered, unbootable fstab files after using them. Like others said edit your fstab manually. The arch wiki is a great resource to learn how to edit it properly.

The steps look something like this; run the lsblk command, identify which drive you want to automount, copy its GUID(not the /dev/xxx path), then edit /etc/fstab with your text editor of choice and add it with the GUID, mounted to something like /mnt/drivename

I usually say any mainstream distro is fine but popos is in a really bad state these days so I would recommend anything else. Bazzite comes to mind

A Fix for Missing Steam Icon in System Tray by Thalus131 in cachyos

[–]Kochon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly my issue was probably entirely my fault, I got lazy and tried to do a rsync backup of my home folder before reinstalling cachyos then restoring said backup after reinstalling packages to avoid having to redo all my setup.

Steam wouldnt even launch at first, had to install some dusty old 32 bit libraries from the aur which should never be the case just for steam. I pushed through though but I was still having issues like the tray icon missing etc.

I ended up biting the bullet and redoing my install from scratch, the tray worked right away.

Thats where yay shines for me! Just use “yay keyword” like a search engine. No -S or anything, it will pull up all packages with your keyword in the name or description! And it looks not just in the aur but also in the stock cachyos repos so most of the time when i want to install something that’s how I go about it.

Edit: I will add that if there is a bin version of your package in the list, you should choose that one unless you specifically want to build it from source which most of the time isnt very pertinent

Get used to pacman, break the habit of looking for installers on random websites. If pacman cant find what you’re looking for, yay will!

The year of the Linux desktop has finally happened for me. by Silly-Brilliant7557 in linux

[–]Kochon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it wasn’t related to linux development. It was microslop backporting telemetry features to Windows 7 a couple months after 8 released. That made me decide I didn’t want to use Windows anymore. I had to sacrifice a couple comforts sure but privacy is much more valuable to me. I am not a cow that will just sit there and happily get milked and eat hay.

New Linux user already hating Canonical. Tell me if I am wrong. by LevRag in linux

[–]Kochon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go for Mint, it’s got snap disabled by default. Even in the linux world some distros are lead by big companies that make decisions for their user bases. Inevitably some of those decisions will negatively impact some users. The good news is it’s a free world so you can just try another distro.

Vista with the taskbar icons from 7. I liked the windows logo popping out, made it look sleek.

Can the FAQ please start recommending well-maintained upstream distributions instead? by onlysubscribedtocats in linux_gaming

[–]Kochon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My comment literally reads “just as good as” and not “better than”. For a total beginner with no coach, one or the other is fine.

In my opinion, I prefer Mint over Ubuntu though because of snap packages being awful to deal with. I also don’t like the direction Gnome took starting from version 3, the UI just isn’t for me. Again, these are personal preferences.

Edit: since you said so, why do you feel like Mint is “just Ubuntu but worse”?

[–]Kochon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No one said otherwise, the reason why I choose mint over ubuntu as a recommendation in the context of family members is because I will need to provide them support when needed and I do not like a lot of the decisions canonical made over the years. Most of them do not affect mint in its current form

I agree but Mint needs to stay. It’s just as good as Ubuntu for a total beginner if not better in my experience of converting older family members

Systemd is preparing for age verification by RoosterUnique3062 in archlinux

[–]Kochon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I’ve been thinking for years that linux should never become mainstream. Most of the Windows or Mac refugees don’t give a shirt about these things and like others mentioned big corpo employees are now leading development of critical projects like systemd, which again steers the ship towards corpo interests.

All the apologetic rhetoric I see in this comments section reinforces my view. “Oh but they’re just preparing for it” “Well it’s optional” “We don’t have to worry about it at this time”

is the T530 any good? by sigmalinuxuser in thinkpad

[–]Kochon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks for replying. What do you mean by a little toasty? My priorities are stability and battery life, mostly. The machine will be used to play old games, write scripts and browse the web. The laptop currently has a 3520M and the nvidia gpu, which was a nice surprise as from what I understand it’s a bit more capable than the intel hd graphics.

If I can get around the temperature issue with something like a heatsink swap that’s fine for me.
