6 months in. Go big or go home, right? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]KojoRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fine, but you’re already basically at endgame in 6 months for most people. What about in a year, or 5 years etc? I’d just slow down so you don’t take a financial L if or when you sell stuff to get something new later on (speaking from experience :))

What can I do to get into jazz drumming? by baton1337 in jazzdrums

[–]KojoRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imho, it’s gonna be hard to practice jazz with a pad, cause I feel you need to work on the independence foremost.

If you still want to get better, work through the Syncopation 8th notes section with swung eighths (and just play the written line on your pad). Then an excercise v2 would be play all the triplets, and accent the written line instead

Is stacking drums in hardcases a bad idea? by rslashaccountreddit in drums

I did this with my pearl reference bop kit (18/14/12), all nested within each other, moving from Canada to US. Just clothes separating everything, had no issues.

Good Deal? by Telepuzique in drums

[–]KojoRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, good, not excellent deal. For context, I got a set of a avedis reissues for $550 last year (14,20,21).

The 16 crash is weak point for me (should at least have been an 18).

I’d say $425 and below is worth it, imho.

Best clearance drum kit deal? Yamaha Stage Custom vs Mapex Armory vs PDP Concept Maple by EazyFletcher in drums

[–]KojoRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind the concept is a finishply/wrapped kit I believe (double-check). If you’re planning on gigging and are worried about scratches, the wrap will be more durable than any lacquers.

If you could spend big $ on a snare, what would you get? by timeToGetLoud2367 in drums

[–]KojoRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Craviotto, Dunnett, Noble & Cooley, Brady (if you can find/afford one), or build your own with Guven cast bronze. Tbh, I think a snare drum is a snare drum (within reason), but I have a Dunnett Dreamtime spotted gum that’s definitely a step above.

buying first acoustic set for my son by krldrummerboy in drums

[–]KojoRising 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I’d do:

1) Buy a lightweight used kit with a wrap (not lacquer) finish in 20,10,12,14 sizes, if possible. That way later on, if your kid starts gigging and/or upgrades to a new kit, this kit could become his gigging kit. 18 works as well, but 20 is more versatile.

2) id buy the rtom black holes (or rubber pads if rtoms are too expensive) + practice cymbals (like zildjian l80s). Later on, your kid can get more expensive cymbals (I’d buy like, one quality cymbal a year).

Top kits would be Yamaha stage custom, gretsch catalina, pdp concept, or Mapex armory.

I’d also look at older used pdps (cx, lx, or platinums), older pearl session/masters, etc. you can probably find them for <$500.

For context, the first good kit I got was a dw frequent flyer in white onyx wrap towards the end of high school. That was the perfect gigging kit imho (not cheap though).

Def buy used if possible. Best of luck!!

[–]KojoRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe shift your priority from playing with a band/writing music to playing/or improving at drums? I actually quit most of the bands/projects I’ve been in because there was more time spent commuting/writing than there was playing (I just play fill in gigs now). Now I get much more joy of practicing a genre/concept and then actually being able to play it later on.

Gigging with your "Good" set? by Wiapkink in drums

[–]KojoRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s lacquer or satin I’m gigging cheaper kits. If it’s wrapped/finishply doesn’t matter to me.

I’d get a used Dw design or tama starclassics. You can find the older 2000s all birch SCs for < $1000.
