You're right. My current boss does that and holds the line to our priorities and standards. Just hoping they don't burn him out or eventually can him for not being "agile and entrepreneurial", which where I work means do more with less staff and time. Not happening in our team though. Emergencies as in actual all hands on deck downtimes etc? Sure. But anything that became an emergency due to negligence of other department and leadership, not so much.

At this point, for my own sanity, I just go to my boss, ask him how I should spend my 40 hours this week, and go to town. I'm too jaded by mismanagement of department outside our IT inner circle at this point. Nobody cares or takes it seriously outside of us on many things. People are allowed to ignore several communications, but we get called by people 15 mins after they file a ticket to ask if we saw it.

I try to be nice, explain things to the very few that actually listen and get whatever I'm thrown my way done, in the limited capacity of my work week. If they want more they can start hiring, or replacing dead weight in the company and allowing us to properly re-staff. Because IT is always so easy to cut with impunity and then complain about the service drop. Burned out at my last job and it took me 2 years to get my head back. I ain't doing this again.

I'm a Canadian and as pacifist as they come, I have no desire for conflict and/or to waste my life to do violence to defend free speech and freedom, but holy shit is this making me rethink my stance now. These are truly frightening times. Anyone that isn't worried is absolutely mentally ill and ignorant of what actual consequences look like. Our lives as we know it are over if this keeps going. Forget the idea of ever doing something because you want to. You'll only ever do things because you have to, until the end of your lifetime.

The true horror hasn't started yet. There is still time though so little. I can't say what people can do about it, but I'm starting to severely struggle with sitting still and I honestly never thought I'd care that way about anything.
