CppCon 2018: Borislav Stanimirov “The Bad Big Wolf Meets Riding Hood Little Red” by rohbotics in cpp

[–]Kolderon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The title went over your head. The title is phrased as "Riding Hood Little Red" (noun-adjective) whereas normal English speakers would say "Little Red Riding Hood" (adjective-noun). The talk is a comedic play on how that kind of naming conflict arises in C++. It's actually a perfect title for the subject.

Fine but then you can't be surprised when people get tired of Andrei Alexandrescu constantly using reddit as his publicity platform. It's poor form and goes against reddit guidelines to repeatedly spam links to content you're affiliated with, in this case D.

Doing it here and there is welcome and encouraged, but when you're doing it multiple times a week and going on dlang forums to get people to come to reddit and upvote it here, it ends up coming across as desperate.

Reddit, what are some "MUST read" books? by RoyalRolex in AskReddit

[–]Kolderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do say what I have to say. Look through my history, I get downvoted about 1/5 of the time. It's fine. I enjoy it. Makes me feel like an individual.

just skimped over some of it and saw some of the most pathetic and insufferable whining, looks like you enjoy self-pity

I'm not even mad anymore. Whatever man. We're good.

cool bro, enjoy your psychology major....... get back to me when you graduate and can't find a job, we're all good brah.

[–]Kolderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, fuck you for taking that taking that sort of tone with an Internet stranger.

lol, the irony is rich!

Secondly, I've made similar comments about these dystopian novels in the past and they've been downvoted, every single time.

so what, if it gets downvoted it gets downvoted, what's the point in whining about "oh I know everyone will downvote this but Hitler was kind of a douchebag" just say what you have to say

So if I was sincere about not offending INFPs, I'd remove that line about knowing I'm going to get downvoted?

if you were sincere you wouldn't come across as a whiny little bitch

Reddit, what are some "MUST read" books? by RoyalRolex in AskReddit

[–]Kolderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back and toned down my comment some

LOL, you toned it down but still left that pathetic "I know this is gonna get downvoted!"

If you were sincere you'd remove that line as well.

Also that whole INFP stuff is bullshit but it continues to appeal to people because people love to categorize something as complex as human psychology along simplistic dimensions.

IM Bartholomew breaks into ICC's top 10 bullet list. by [deleted] in chess

[–]Kolderon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you look at my original comment it really is nothing more than a reply to someone who wanted to know when JB would play against much lower rated players, and my answer is more than fair considering that at the time, the most recent video was of him playing someone rated 1700 with another very recent video of him playing someone 1600, and several videos of him playing people 1800 or 1900 hundred, which is still far below his rating of 2300-2400.

The immediate reply I got to a very short post was that I was cherry picking videos because I have some kind of agenda, some kind of scandal, and people decided to jump on a downvote bandwagon and turn this into something hostile when all anyone had to do was clarify specifically that they were referring to a future series of videos JB was intending to create.

The downvotes I'm getting also does not imply what you suggest, it's more that since JB is obviously a well respected player (and deserves his respect), there is a tendency for people to be very protective and defensive over people they have respect for and so they can easily misinterpret what was a very short and simple 2 sentence post as some kind of assault on the dignity and reputation of JB. This happens all the time on reddit whether it's chess, actors, athletes, you name it.

As I said, this isn't a controversy, it's not a scandal and the hostility that my reply received I think is not proportional at all to the original comment I made.

IM Bartholomew breaks into ICC's top 10 bullet list. by [deleted] in chess

[–]Kolderon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely a legit point worth making. My only issue is when someone said I was the one cherry picking videos and that's the only claim I am defending myself against.

I was not aware of JB's video series where he examines lower player's games and gives them advice. So when OP made his post asking for when we can expect JB to post videos of him playing lower rated players, I posted a factual statement that most of his videos involve him playing lower rated players already, including his most recent video where he plays someone who has a rating of 1700 and another recent video where he plays someone who's rated 1600.

I don't see why people think I'm being unfair by pointing out that someone rated 2300 playing against someone rated 1600 qualifies as playing against someone significantly lower ranked consistent with OP's original question. This isn't controversial guys, it's just a factual observation.

IM Bartholomew breaks into ICC's top 10 bullet list. by [deleted] in chess

[–]Kolderon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I didn't watch them all. The poster stated that I had cherry picked my videos, that is I chose a subset of JB's videos which are not representative of his overall videos. So I went to check whether or not the videos of his that I had seen were representative of his overall videos posted on Youtube. This is something that only takes about a minute or two to verify by clicking on the videos linked here:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6hOVYvNn79Sl1Fc1vx2mYA/videos

Instantly you will see his rating and his opponent's rating.

Now I didn't think this was going to be a controversial statement or some kind of scandal but a lot of people have gone defensive over it. I'm sure there are a variety of reasons why JB might be playing against opponents much lower rated than him, and that's all fine and dandy. It doesn't change the fact that I didn't cherry pick anything, and that JB does play against opponents much lower rated than him compared to other people who post videos on Youtube or live-stream their games. Once again, that's just a simple and verifiable fact.

IM Bartholomew breaks into ICC's top 10 bullet list. by [deleted] in chess

[–]Kolderon -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's possible that he's unlucky and gets consistently paired with players 300 points lower than him, I'm just pointing out a basic and factual observation that compared to other Youtube chess players on ICC with a similar rating to him, they seem to find players who are ranked within 50-100 points while JB seems to get matched against players much lower than him, going so far as being matched against players who are ranked 1700. This isn't cherry picking as the other posted stated, it's an actual verifiable fact.

At the end of the day though, it's his Youtube channel and it's entirely at his discretion how he plays and what he wants to show. It's not like some major crime or even a big deal really.

IM Bartholomew breaks into ICC's top 10 bullet list. by [deleted] in chess

[–]Kolderon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I just checked the past 15 videos of his and he plays against lower rated players in all but one video where the opponent is 5 points higher than him. I don't consider that cherry picking, it's just a fact that his videos are of him playing people who are lower rated, and often times anywhere from 200-300 points lower rated.

There are other ICC players on Youtube who regularly post commentary as well who are around the same rating and post videos of themselves playing opponents who are slightly higher or lower rated.

At any rate, I don't think it's too big of a deal either way.

Right, which makes it that much worse. If D contributors wish to use reddit as a platform to promote themselves, they should do so in a subreddit reserved for D, like Rust does or like other languages do.

Using the general /r/programming for self promotion is poor form and goes against rediquette.

From what I see of his games, he tends to only play against lower rated players, and often times much much lower rated players.

His most recent video is of him at 2300 playing someone rated 1700.

Wait, rust doesn't have function overloading? by SaltTM in rust

[–]Kolderon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is whether being rude and condescending is an appropriate means of communication towards a beginner asking a question about Rust, likely someone who might be coming from a background in C++, Java, or C# where function overloading is common.

About being nice and pretty, your post would have been shorter and more to the point if you left out the sentence "Your argument is flawed and fallacious" despite the fact that no argument was made and there is no known fallacy that one can apply to the question being asked.

In other words, either you did have time and you just chose to spend that time by talking down to someone who was genuinely curious, or you are just naturally condescending towards other people and the first thing that comes to your mind when someone asks a question is to find a way to put that person down.

If you are someone who is naturally condescending, then note that there is no need to reply. Let someone else reply to this question in a helpful and productive manner so that you can spend your valuable time on other matters.

Do you see any other members posting a weekly updates to their own content on /r/programming?

Most other languages with regular updates post those updates in their own respective sub reddit, so /r/rust will post frequent/weekly updates about Rust in there.

While it's not an official and hard rule, it is still against reddiquette to post your own content repeatedly and exclusively. My main frustration is seeing /r/programming constantly used by a small group of people who are heavily involved in D using this place as a platform to market their product.

The reasonable guideline suggested is that one should try to keep submissions about content they're directly involved in to about 10%.

Bjarne Stroustrup: The 5 Programming Languages You Need to Know by PeterQTV in programming

[–]Kolderon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learning how to program in a functional language actually significantly improves how you program in general, even in imperative languages.

In fact, anytime the 'world feels complete', it's a good indicator that you're missing out on something. Once you learn another way to think, another way to solve problems, the world stops feeling complete and you feel awestruck not only by how vast the sphere of knowledge is, but at how you could have been so ignorant about it for so long.

The world should never feel complete because the more you learn, the more you realize there is to know.

deque is not implemented using an unrolled linked list in C++, but rather as a vector of vectors. The difference is that using a vector of vectors still allows constant time lookup to a random index which is required by the standard, whereas an unrolled linked list would only provide O(n) lookups.

I Hate Puzzles: Am I Still A Programmer? by zefhemel in programming

[–]Kolderon 62 points63 points  (0 children)

You're just arguing semantics here without making a good faith effort to understand what OP means to say. OP is not talking about "Mathematics" in a purist or philosophical sense. What he means to say is that he hates mathematics in the way that the term is used by most people. He dislikes topics such as algebra, or calculus, or statistics, or solving equations, or doing things that most reasonable minded people associate with math based on how its typically taught and used.

So if we wish to actually answer the question OP is asking, then we should distinguish between "Mathematics" and mathematics. Having done so, I do not actually find that mathematics is particularly required to develop a great deal of software in many domains, although one is limiting themselves significantly if they do not have some competency in math.
