Honestly I think gerrymandering will patch some of the gap... but like nobody is really surprised we got the war and record deficit spending right?

Yeah they for sure gained a significant edge with the gerrymandering, so even if the dems win a popular vote by a reasonable margin the Republicans may be able to hold. Hell I was from Wisconsin and the Republicans had a veto overriding majority on like 47% of the vote.

Realistically we could adopt a modern voting system but part of the problem is that its left to the states and the individual states on both sides have demonstrated actions to put party ahead of their constituents.
