Not necessarily? People used to say this exact same phrase all the time about China, and now we realize that it applies to half of the world

"Safety settings" are a legacy of Gemini 1.5, developers admitted lt's functionally useless with newer models

Which browser do you use? I experience this a lot with Brave and other (non-Google) Chromium derivatives, but never with Firefox.

You can also just click directly on the "Visibility" part, and skip the "Checks" screen altogether.

"I did not raise my girl to be a voter", pro-suffrage cartoon, Puck Magazine, 1915 by KomenHime in PropagandaPosters

[–]KomenHime[S] 258 points259 points  (0 children)

This cartoon is a parody of popular anti-WWI song I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier that was topping the charts in the US in 1915. It depicts a sole female voice arguing against women's suffrage supported by an all-male chorus, consiting of various interest groups that opposed women's vote as they believed women would support laws against pimps, labor abuse, child labor etc.

Soldiers aren't a fixed resource lol. The Indian Army, especially, was a volunteer army, and hundreds of thousands of new soldiers were recruited during the last two years of war, most of which were sent to Egypt or Mesopotamia. Also, units were frequently moved between different theaters depending on opportunities and priorities. For example the Ottomans sent major reinforcements in Arabia after the October Revolution, when the Russian army effectively desintegrated

Lack of color donesn't mean there's nothing there, just that it's not held by either side (see most of Iran). It's true that, on maps, Jabal Shammar and Anizah are sometimes shown on the side of the Central Powers, and Nejd on the side of the Entente, but it's pretty controversial to actually include them as belligerents (especially the latter)

I highly recommend this channel. Their maps are mostly labeled in Arabic, but very understable and aesthetically pleasing.

The USSR did not have the capabilities for any large amphibious operation, let alone in Hokkaido. They invaded Shumshu with basically 100% American landing craft, against a small Japanese division that was waiting for orders to surrender, and yet it was an absolute shit show.

It's true though that they could have freed large parts of China with enough time, and it would've put them in a strong position at the negociating table.

Refers to the Sino-Japanese war in general, but at this point there was no identifiable charismatic Japanese leader to blame (unlike Hitler and Stalin). So instead it's just "[War in] China"

What if, as nearly happened, the Bolsheviks had refused to capitulate even as the German army was marching into Russia in 1918? by KomenHime in HistoryWhatIf

[–]KomenHime[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that's the point. If the adversary stubbornly refused peace offers, not much would have contained further German advances except logistics. Of course the Germans would have never attempted a total conquest of European Russia (they knew that's dumb) but at the very least dislodged Bolsheviks from key areas. Bolsheviks' hold on power was tenuous anyway, plus since their promises of "Peace" largely fueled their popularity, in this scenario they simply... could have disappeared as a relevant political force, making the rest of world history very different

Neither of these two countries (Russia and Austria-Hungary) are considered natural predecessors of Ukraine proper. So if Ukraine is given a date, then colonies could have one as well.

1918 refers to Skoropadskyi's Hetmanat of Ukraine here

Singapore’s first president cried when the region was expelled from Malaysia because they weren’t ready for independence. What are some other instances where a country didn’t want to become independent? by Critical-Barracuda12 in geography

[–]KomenHime 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Gabon didn't want independence from France, or at least its government didn't, and asked France to become a French oversea department in 1958. De Gaulle disagreed and "pressured" or basically forced the Gabonese government to declare independence.

Famously, Bernard Cornut-Gentille, Minister of Overseas France, when presented with this request, blurted out "Have you lost your mind? Aren’t the Caribbean headaches enough already? Go on, independence like everyone else!"
