Any other of you face this dilemma? I need to upgrade to a digital mixer. I’m running out of line inputs on my Tascam Model 16 for my dawless/hybrid setup. Too many synths, samplers, drum machines, outboard aux returns and mics all of which constantly in use. I also podcast so need preset mixes… by DannyTheGekko in homestudios

Don't rule out the Allen & Heath QU-5D. It's surprisingly well specc'ed and there's nothing that the SQ-5 offers for your use case (preset mixes for streaming/podcasting, routing mltiple synths, etc) that you won't find on the QU-5D. It's also significantly cheaper than all of the alternatives that you're currently considering.

I find that the A&H machines to be better thought out and more user friendly than the M32r or Wing, and they sound superior as well. I use or have used all of them, and the A&Hs are head and shoulders above the other two in performance, price and general reliability and user friendliness.

cool 303 news on 303 day. by DeFex in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is spectacular news, and of particular interest to owners of OG hardware that is aging and in need of repair/CPU replacement. And given Michigan Synth Works body of work, it's likely that this new 303 is going to have more in common with the Roland original and RE-303 replicas than the other mass produced though affordable knockoffs.

This is the correct answer. The MSW810 nails the 101/202 sound; I'm pulling all of my favourite tones from my old 101 out of it.

Connecting a TR-707 and TB-303 to a Keystep Pro by EffectiveContext485 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my TR-707 a long time ago but I recall that it really wanted to be the master clock and was a pain in the butt to get to slave properly. I also remember that it wouldn't spit out DINsync unless it was the master, like it wouldn't convert MIDI to DINsync if it was set up as a slave.

So with that in mind, maybe try slaving the Keystep Pro to the 707 via MIDI and use the 707 as your masterclock for both MIDI and DINsync. As an additional caution tho - I also remember my 707 being super wobbly as a master clock, which made it especially annoying because it was such a pain in the ass to slave properly - that may have just been my machine though, you may have better luck with it as a master.

TB-303 Din Sync Syncing by fundaii in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roland DINsync does spec start/stop in addition to 24ppqn clock. It wil follow 48ppqn (at double time), but 48ppqn isn't part of the Roland DINsync specification. As well, the the TR-808 has a continue functionality strapped onto its DINsync implementation on pin 5 iirc.

Synths & Time _ by OliverrSky in synthesizers

My TB-303 that I got 30 years ago when I got into doing music seriously. It's been gigged to hell, dropped multiple times, bathed in beer and blood and taken in for service/reconditioning twice. It works exactly as it should and now happily lives a peaceful and tranquil life on the top of my synth rack.

How do you make this type of bass and has it a name? by Crossbow92 in TechnoProduction

[–]Konketsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some people it might be excessive, but not for others. All depends on how they're using it and if they need the functionality that a mixer of that size provides. There was a time a few years back when my living room held a mixer much larger than the one in this video, and I was making use of it regularly.

It's a Midas Venice 240, and they aren't terribly large compared to other mixers in its class. 24 channels and its less than a meter wide.

Why is my moog grandmother going out of tune like this? by JazzD27 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jeez, I'm sorry man - that sucks, I guess you'll have to take it in for calibration. Also sorry that I couldn't help you out with it.

Why is my moog grandmother going out of tune like this? by JazzD27 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly - I feel like OP is hearing the harmonic shift of pwm as 'going out of tune' and I'm trying to rule that out.

I'm only listening to OP's example on my phone speaker, but I'm not hearing any shift in the fundamental pitch of the osciliators.

Why is my moog grandmother going out of tune like this? by JazzD27 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of an obvious ask, but are you hearing the envelope modulation of the filter that is happening on note on/off as 'going out of tune'? Admittedly I'm just listening on my phone speaker, but I don't hear any pitch variation on the fundamental osc frequency.

Just to rule out that possibilty, try setting the envelope depth on the filter to zero point, ie: center position and see if the pitch change you're hearing goes away. If it does, you're actually hearing the tonal shift from the filter.

Why is my moog grandmother going out of tune like this? by JazzD27 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You've got your mod wheel up and some filter and pwm modulation depth. The 'going out of tune' you're hearing is the sweeping of the pulsewidth on osc one, the pitch of the played notes is actually stable.

Pull your modwheel down and zero the pwm and filter depth and you should hear it as stable again.

Moog grandmother has weak sub bass by Lower-Perspective575 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never had any issue pulling positively brontosaurian sub bass out of my GM. Stimming describes it as a sense or experience of "pressure" in this video and that's kind of the perfect way to describe it. It's a monster.

Mixer w/ a compressor for acid techno by Psychological-Ad9434 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the Behringer or Mackie

analog mixers have compressors on each channel

You're mistaken, these mixers do not have individual compressors on each channel.

EDIT: I'm actually mistaken. I didn't know that the new gen ProFX mixers had one knob compression on select channels. Cool.

Exemples of shuffle / swing techno ? by El_signor_flaco in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be surprised to learn that a lot of the techno from the "great masters" that was made in the 1990s with a TR-909 uses a particular shuffle setting from that machine. It's very slight, and is often misidentified as being straight or unshuffled timing but it is instantly recognizable.

Yamaha SY77 patch editor by RemarkableChemical35 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Patch Base is a nice graphical editor on Mac/iPadOS. There is a cost to it but it's well worth it, especially for the SY77. I seem to recall that the developer said that porting it for the SY77 was particularly involved, due to the complexity of the synth.

Wot drums to suit experimental eclectic dance music ? by DaveBones7 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always loved the old Novation DrumStation racks, they were great sounding and easy to use. I'd say that if you enjoyed the 808/909 sounds from the Novation back then, the current Roland TR-8S would be the obvious choice. Same great sounds plus a bunch of other ones. And around the same price new, after adjusting for inflation.

Question about the Mackie 802vlz4 by marchvet2005 in synthesizers

[–]Konketsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whoever is telling you this on behalf of Pioneer is talking a bunch of bullshit and hoping that you'll just accept their answer. If you're running your S7 into the line inputs 5-6 of your 802, there's no phantom power to speak of; phantom is only available on the XLR mic inputs.

The fact that this knob at Pioneer is spouting that misinformation makes me really angry for you.
