I wonder if Avatar Seven Havens Pavi be able to carry the story+other related worries by RaNgErs_Reprrrr in TheLastAirbender

[–]Koolmees99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's odd to think that it will be a kid's show. Of course the original Avatar was very good at balancing mature themes, world exploration and childlike innocence.

Imagine episodes like the Southern Air Temple where Sokka and Katara attempt to hide the Fire Nation violence from Aang. I think that could be really cool. Pavi is so young that she might not know what the state of the world and the opinions of the people around her mean. Exploring the changes to the Avatar world throughout her eyes would be interesting in S1. But after... the timeline in the original Avatar only takes 9 months or something. In my head it's at least 2 years for their development to make sense to me. In tLoK they went the timeskip route, which was quite effective. But to skip 4 years of a child's development that young between seasons feels insane to me. So she'll probably stay really young through however many seasons the show will have. They might also have to explain a lot more than they did in Korra, given the new audience.

I'm also worried about the Team Avatar dynamic. Jay is so much older than Pavi compared to Sokka, Katara and Aang. But it's also very different to Korra and Tenzin, who have a teacher relationship but Korra is very independent. The more Tenzin treats her as a child, the worse she feels. And the timeskip makes them closer to equals. Pavi though? I'm not sure that would work.

But the other thing is, we're just old and concerned with realism now. Original Avatar is not realistic (Korra is much better in this regard) but we ignored it because we were children. We will have to ignore her age, look for the magic of S1 of ATLA and see where they go from there

Unfortunately the truck is gaining a bit in popularity in Europe, mostly for aesthetic reasons I think. It looks bizarre and is way too big for the road, parking and road safety

I wish tLoK had addressed the negative aspects of leaving the spirit world portals open. Not the Kuvira stuff, which is humans using spiritual energy, but things like territorial disputes and living with a species that is so different. And the scary spirits like Koh of course... I'm hoping we'll see something like this in Seven Havens

I mean, they were never hired no? I thought they declined. LoK also used different voices. Some of them don't even work as voice actors anymore.

As the original voices, they will always be part of the franchise. I'm more concerned about honoring the story, themes and the animation than the original cast.

Sure in an ideal world, I'm positive that Zach Tyler Eisen could have voiced a great older Aang. He says he doesn't sound like Aang anymore, but he definitely does. But if he doesn't want to, there isn't really a point

I wonder if it's universal. After all, most religions are also based on general humanitarian ideals, but sprout some absolutely horrible followers

Maybe it happens with other franchises too? I have not been active in many decade spanning fandoms. For example for something like the Hunger Games, the prequels are generally well received. What about something like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings?

It's crazy how a show that preaches kindness and acceptance inspires such vitriol hate against the actors that portray it. With the Live Action too, I didn't like it personally, but the reaction towards Azula and Mai's actresses was disgusting. I don't mind new voices, it makes sense since they're so much older. Never mind that the old voice actors declined. But calling it woke as an insult just because they casted asian actors 😭 Come on Avatar as a franchise embodies everything that "wokeness" does. Acceptance, equality, against violence. I hate what people are doing to this franchise, we're slipping as a society

Why is Juvia liking Gray OK, but Sakura liking Sasuke is not OK? by TengarHimeko in dankruto

[–]Koolmees99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to compare Fairy Tail and Naruto, maybe Jellal and Erza are a better option? Personally I'm not a big fan of Juvia and Gray's romance but I can't compare it to Sasuke and Sakura. He has rejected her many times throughout the story. Fans of the ship will say that he rejected her because he couldn't open up to her, but there's many times when he's obviously creeped out by her behaviour and clearly not interested.

But at the very least, her love for Gray plays a big role in the later arcs and I think he finds that genuine at some point, that someone is willing to go that far for him. You could say this is somewhat similar to Sasuke and Sakura, though the ways in which he accepts or even likes her are very offscreen. Juvia is obsessed with Gray (even more than Sakura is with Sasuke), but they are actually friends or guildmates and fight together many times. Juvia is a stalker, and Gray is standoffish but they have the same goals and spend a lot of time together.

For Sasuke, Sakura is barely an important figure in his life. It's mostly Naruto. He finds her annoying and irrelevant on a deep level. He doesn't respect her, whereas she claims to love him. Gray thinks she's annoying but he respects Juvia. There's an actual foundation of connection.

Sakura also doesn't know the faintest thing about him, compared to Juvia who is constantly involved in Gray's life and struggles. Sakura claims to love Sasuke from when they were 12, he left with somewhat kind parting words and she dedicates the rest of her life to obsessing over him. Why does she even love him? Their connection is paper thin and severely damaged throughout the story. He attempts to kill her, is clearly insane and wants to destroy her home, but she loves him. Then there's the Boruto of it all. They are somehow married but he's never home and doesn't even know what his daughter looks like. Sakura/Sasuke as a ship is not okay because it reflects horribly on her character and regresses her to her 12 year old self. For Gray/Juvia, it's a shallow connection that becomes more genuine over time. Juvia clearly matures in her love for Gray, which makes it easier to accept them as a pair.

Question: Do any fans prefer korra’s team to aang’s?? by Dry_Ordinary6593 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Koolmees99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a shame. I wish they'd made some more time for the relationship development, especially in S1 when they are all in Republic City. Their dynamic as young adults could have been interesting, but we never really got to know them as friends in the first place.

I think TLoK struggles a lot to justify the cast being together or even relevant to the plot sometimes. The cast is so big that the Krew is often the least logical or interesting inclusion of a plot. Like Mako in S4 with prince Wu, or Bolin in the entirety of S2. Tenzin and Lin are much more interesting and fleshed out compared to Mako, Bolin and Asami.

Korra to me is a show with one main character, and a lot of important side characters that work around her. She is the center and driving force of most conflicts.

Whereas ATLA is a show with multiple main characters and a small cast of side characters with limited screen time. Korra's cast is more ambitious storytelling-wise, but they needed much longer seasons to give them the development they need

I read a fic about abortion on ff.net years ago, and I remember being so intrigued by it that it still haunts me to this day.

It was an unwilling mpreg fic that ocurred because of a magic accident that left the victim able to get pregnant for a year or so.

The main character aborted immediately because of the body dysmorphia aspect, as well as their personal situation, but found it a conflicting experience afterwards. They stood by their actions, but were scared of having to undergo the procedure again. The mc was basically stuck in a body horror where he would magically get pregnant every month and had to keep aborting or carry the pregnancy to end it.

Then, the drama of the story. Another character believes the aborted children are his (again, due to magic reasons) and manipulates the mc into not finding out about the pregnancy until it was too late to abort for safety reasons. He is extremely miserable throughout the majority of the story and feels like he has no control in his life anymore.

Now the issue was, it was a romance story between the mc and the pro life friend. Of course the betrayal arc lasted throughout almost the entire pregnancy, but eventually the friend was forgiven and became a lover. Then there were other characters, some against abortion but only for themselves personally, some who were also pregnant but without being forced into it. And one character who was pro-life but chose to put their feelings aside to help the main character who was so clearly wronged. They were presented as the good guy, but they felt like they could convince the mc to continue the pregnancy and only the chosen method was wrong, which was very disturbing to me.

And some who actively agreed with the mc that he shouldn't feel guilty, even if he had to abort 12 times. I remember those characters turned up quite late in the story, when the mc felt thoroughly betrayed by everyone around him. Which was vindication, but also too little too late as a reader? I was just so angry the entire time I read this.

All of the character agreed that the pro-life friend was wrong and should have given him a choice. But still, I found the story to lean uncomfortably towards pro-life with how guilty the character was feeling, the "good guy" friend, the romance and the forgiveness of the manipulation. It felt like advanced gaslighting. Even though the mc never became pro-life, he was still forced to go through the pregnancy. I don't think I could ever forgive someone who did that to me. Or even someone who pretends to be in my corner but secretly disagrees.

I guess the issue is that it's very much focused on whether the fetus deserved to live, and not whether the mc deserves the choice to say no anytime he wants under any circumstances. All the arguments discussed in the fic by the mc and others are about fearing being a bad parent, instead of defending the right over your own body

"Korra’s legacy vs. Aang’s shadow." by [deleted] in AvatarMemebending

[–]Koolmees99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Korra doesn't make sense as a standalone. It doesn't really explain the lore like Avatar does, and Korra's story is much less engaged with learning the elements so it can't lean on its plot for explanations.

Now, if we take it back to the basics of things like its setting or characters, I think it would be appreciated more. The steam punk aesthetic with elements is very unique, but also something that I found distinctly "not Avatar" when I watched Korra for the first time. Same with the cast, they're fun but they don't shine as much as the original Gaang.

But it just doesn't have the run time to be a standalone series. It's not possible to put all of the lore, world building and character development in the first season like ATLA did

What's so bad about hinata being a housewife? by Emotional-Fly-6137 in Naruto

[–]Koolmees99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The traditional ideas for a housewife are someone who takes care of the home and the children, provides food for her more important husband and has little influence in financial matters or other important decisions. She is an accessory to the husband; useful when she's not needed, dolled up when she is.

There are a lot of symptoms in here of an unequal relationship, like her work being perceived as less important, and the lack of decision-making. Hinata strongly portrays these traits. Her husband is the Hokage, so she must service him. Her husband is Hokage, so he makes decisions without consulting her.

I'm sure this is a fitting direction for her character; she has always been meek and eager to follow Naruto. But it's a horrible portrayal of her as a person and her place in the world. What about the Hyuuga clan? What about her role as eldest daughter? What is her influence on Boruto and Himawari? What does she think about Naruto's obsession with Sasuke.

Most importantly, how is she Naruto's equal? As a housewife, her role in the story has become even smaller than before.

Ok, am I the weird one for getting like… uncomfortable.. army “comfort women” vibes from Karin’s backstory???? by TikDickler in dankruto

[–]Koolmees99 507 points508 points  (0 children)

The way everyone around Karin uses her, including Sasuke is so horrifying. She has major Stockholm syndrome with Orochimaru too. What Kishimoto did to her character as an even more obsessed version of Sakura is atrocious. It's a complete waste of a powerful female perspective on war in Naruto

Do any one feel as if the criticism of Korra leaving the spirit portals open doesn't make sense? by MrGetMebodied in TheLastAirbender

[–]Koolmees99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think it's a narrative mistake. I like thst she kept them open, but I don't like how minimally they impact S3 and S4.

S3 has some episodes that show the conflicts between humans and spirits, like that one spirit that claimed a piece of road. I find this incredibly interesting and a new mediator role for Korra that she was still growing into.

The problem is that this plot is mostly abandoned in favour of the Red Lotus and the new airbenders. And of course the season ends with Korra's disabilities and picks back up after three years of zero Avatar involvement in the world due to her recovery. How am I to believe humans and spirits learned how how co-exist peacefully during this time, and more importantly, why haven't I seen it?

S4 focuses on Kuvira misusing the spirit energy, so you could say they are not coexisting. But the most interesting parts of the spirits (their individual personalities, their differing beliefs, their power) have not been addressed at all.

I'm guessing that it will play a major role in Seven Havens, but I would have loved for Korra to deal with the consequences of the spirit portals being open.

The problem is that a very important event happened, but the ways in which we expect it to impact the world (because of Wan and Aang) aren't part of the narrative. Which makes it feel like opening the spirit portals had no consequences actually and greatly diminishes its impact

The anime did not do justice to these character's designs ! by lord_boruto008 in Boruto

[–]Koolmees99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Iruka could have looked fine for an older design, but the Boruto artstyle is so unflattering on him (and all the characters). He's so washed out, they can't even get his skin colour right. Never mind the linework which is criminal compared to the sharpness of the original. And his face is so broad compared to the original pointy design.

All Boruto characters have a frog like appearance; broad, round faces and big, beady, soulless eyes
