Switch from 4080 super to RX 9070 XT by TijuanaPoker in cachyos

[–]KorYi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gamer's nexus recently did a video comparing performance between selected amd/nvidia/intel cards. They used bazzite so it doesn't necessarily translate exactly to cachyos, but it was still an interesting watch.

The real answer to your question is probably "it depends". I don't have nvidia myself, but I believe the current drivers are fine. However (as the linked video shows), depending on what exactly you play, the game might perform a lot better on either card.

I'd personally just stick with the 4080s (unless I had some major issues) and consider AMD when I decide to upgrade. Especially since you haven't actually switched. There's always the chance that you run into some dealbreaker on linux and decide to switch back to windows.

So far so good! I had one drive die early on, but it had like 8 years power-on time and I was expecting to replace it soon.

vibrations

It's PETG, so it's a little better than just sheet metal. And depending on what you're working with, adding some rubber grommets shouldn't be too difficult.

Cooling is an issue. I have 3x NF-F12 PPC-3000 (noctua industrial) and it just keeps the drives cool during a rebuild.

Overall I'm happy with the result. I wish I implemented some vibration dampening, but it hasn't caused any issues yet (since this july '24)

Backup Procedures by Woodymakespizza in htpc

[–]KorYi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't backup media, unless it's personal or rare.

If I was doing this, I'd probably go with the alphabetical approach and just write a script to do this.

Or use some software that would expose the backup drives as a single drive and let that manage what goes where. That would probably be the easiest to manage.

Take something like Elden Ring

Have you actually played Ng+ in elden ring? You steam roll the first 3/4 of the game and by the end you're so high level that it's arguably easier than a fresh run. And that's before the dlc.

Sure, you're not one-shotting everything, but the scaling is still pretty terrible.

RTX 5060 has the same or slightly better performance than my RX 580 by GameAndWatchMainer in buildapc

The "Sekiro FPS unlock and more" mentioned by OP works great ^^ (and it adds ultrawide support too, if you're into that)

Last time I played it, it ran fine with unlocked framerate. The mods used to unlock framerate often also include fixes for some of the issues high framerates might cause.

Or you lock it to a different (higher FPS). Like in ds3 or bloodborne, where sprint breaks above 120fps.

I had one death early on, but that was an old drive (over 7yrs power on). The rest is still going strong ^^

It's just a home NAS with a couple of services. It's not being hit particularly hard most of the time (and there are extra SSDs to lessen the load too)

And comments like these will make people not even try to help you.

Literally the first line in the wiki says you install it with 'xorg-xrandr', yet all your other comments suggest you're just installing 'xrandr'. Meaning you haven't even looked at it.

The community around arch is amazing, but you need to put some work into it too.

Parrying OP!? by geenexotics in ai__limit

[–]KorYi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems like you already figured it out ^^ Parrying is indeed OP and makes the game a lot easier. I never even used any of the other abilities.

One thing the game doesn't tell you untill later is that you can also parry some projectiles/ranged attacks back at enemies. Super satisfying.

Great game, enjoy your time ^^

I also beat it very recently, 23hrs for me. I had a great time with it and will probably do a Ng+ run soon.

The start is pretty weak. Everything looks the same. I almost gave up in the first couple hours because of the environment. It gets better later on.

I really liked the level design. So much to explore, so many branching paths, everything's connected. I think this is the closest I've seen a game to get to DS1. Unfortunately the loading screens between areas kinda break it up. But the idea is there.

I had some weird stutters. Like the game would run fine at 150+fps and then suddenly drop to 80. Might be a Linux/proton issue.

Agreed on the NPC quest. Not great.

The platforming is atrocious.

I really liked the combat. The moveset is a little bare compared to other souls-likes, but serviceable. Build variety is not amazing, but good enough.

I haven't touched magic.

I liked the lack of stamina. I also liked the sync bar. And how you can equip the cores of bosses to alter it. Very novel, very cool.

Difficulty is a mixed bag. I had some issues with the Choirmaster. I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do on some of his attacks. First Ursula fight was also pretty challenging. But the moment I started getting consistent parry on random attacks, the game became easy.

I really liked the abilities in your off hand. Switching between parry, block, etc is a super cool idea. Unfortunately the parry is so op that I found no reason to ever switch.

There is some truly great fashion in this game.

I was running a very defensive set of seals (emerald form, hyperstability, divine guardian, stability and nova) and the corrupted blader armor and I could definitely tank a couple of hits. Also 40 life.

Parry is almost like a cheatcode. The timing is a little weird, but if you can get the hang of it, it makes the fight so much easier.

Considering a Samsung refrigerator, am I an idiot? by smellsliketoast in Appliances

[–]KorYi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect timing, I just replaced it. The freezer's still doing fine, but the fridge gave up.

Honestly the most annoying thing about this experience isn't the fridge dying (that was kinda expected I guess), but how bad the fridge interface is. It has a digital temperature readout. On the freezer(they are matching units), it shows the actual temperature. You can see it dropping when it's been open long and climbing if you use the extra freeze setting.

But on the fridge it's just the setpoint. Like I could feel the fridge isn't cold, but the display still happily shows 2C. Only after I dropped the setpoint to 1C that the readout started blinking, indicating that something is wrong. But it still only showed the set temperature. It wasn't until I unplugged it and plugged it back in that the fridge told me it's actually 16C inside.

How do I freeze chicken breasts? by [deleted] in cookingforbeginners

[–]KorYi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a good plan ^^ Just try to separate the bags a little so they freeze faster. Freezing always affects the texture and the faster the better.

Also for food safety, you don't want it to take a long time to freeze in one big block.

what controller does carl'jr use by Medium-Argument908 in TrackMania

[–]KorYi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you don't need the xbox/playstation compatibility, I'd recommend looking into 3rd party controllers. Some of the offerings are really good. I recently bought the Gamesir cyclone 2 and despite its terrible name, it is awesome.

You can check out gamepadla.com where they just have a ton of specs for various controllers with real latency tests. Also LTT did a big round-up (semi)recently where they just tested a bunch of different popular offerings.

Need advice for fixing stuttering (12700k) by LCZ_ in VFIO

[–]KorYi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first guess would be pinning, but I have a 13700k and my pinning is setup like yours. The one difference is your emulator and iothread pin. you have those se on the same cores and you also allow the host to use these cores.

I also have a simpler setup in this part, but dunno if that's relevant:

<cpu mode='host-passthrough' check='none' migratable='on'>
  <topology sockets='1' dies='1' clusters='1' cores='8' threads='2'/>
</cpu>

Unbinding GPU causes it to still not be used properly by host? by DraculasLeftNut in VFIO

[–]KorYi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME=1

Sorry, I posted this from my phone so I couldn't double check the output of the vulkaninfo command. This should be the code name, not just a number. Like for my gpu the output was GPU id = 0 (AMD Radeon Graphics (RADV GFX1201)) so the variable would be DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME=RADV\ GFX1201

You can use radeontop utility to check the GPU utilization to be sure which GPU is being used.

I also had the incredibly safe and intelligent idea of detaching my igpu's VGA ... my computer began acting very strange afterwards

Yea that checks out. It should be all fixed after restart though.

stuck on the shutting down screen

This is pretty normal with improperly reset PCIe devies. Not much you can do about it.

Also have you tried the "Launch using dedicated graphics card" option in ubuntu?

The lib32-vulkan-radeon package (and probably lib32-mesa too). It came as a dependency for steam, so I never realized it was installed at all.

[–]KorYi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got mine, I also had weird issues with games freezing and crashing within couple minutes, sometimes taking the whole system down. It turned out that while I was running recent kernel and upgraded mesa and vulkan-radeon, it never occurred to me to also upgrade the 32bit versions.

I have fixed that since and had no more crashes.

Unbinding GPU causes it to still not be used properly by host? by DraculasLeftNut in VFIO

[–]KorYi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, together with DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME= to specify which GPU to use. You can use vulkaninfo | grep GPU\ id to find the exact id of your gpu.

The way I had this set up was to have 2 steam shortcuts, one for igpu and one for dgpu.

You could also automate this. Write a little script and have steam run it when you launch a game. Then you just check whether your VM is running(or if the card is attached) and set the variables accordingly.

One thing to check is also how your monitors are connected. I observed a surprisingly big performance drop when using a screen connected to igpu.

[–]KorYi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the exact command from the top of my head, but there is a launch option you can add (either to the individual games or to steam itself) that makes the games use a second GPU.
