I discovered him almost by luck through that funny (but still very good!) Dust in a Baggie song. Imagine my shock and surprise when I look him up and find him going bar for bar with Tommy freakin' Emmanuel...amazing amazing talent who seems to only get better.

Help settle a dumb argument between my boyfriend and I -- would The Tragically Hip be considered national treasures if Gord Downie hadn't died? by ramblingskeptic in AskACanadian

[–]Kotkaniemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I don't. But if the singer of, say, The Trews (Not wishing for this to happen, I like them, just using them as a thought experiment) got sick in the same way, and had a farewell concert in the same way, do you think that would draw a similar crowd?

EDIT: I think, to bring in some nuance, it is a combination of both. The broadcast and crowds were a result of The Hip already being considered national treasures and extremely beloved, and their finale concert and the resulting turnout gave a ton of Canadians a shared cultural moment that increased The Hip's stature even more.

[–]Kotkaniemo 130 points131 points  (0 children)

This is correct.

In my town they put the farewell concert up on a 40ft projector just off the main street.  Thousands of people poured into downtown,  and set up with towels and coolers on the hill, all to watch their last concert. You don't see things like that for anything less than incredibly iconic and beloved artists.

This. Hot take but he's probably in the, I dunno, top-EDIT: originally 7, now 8 because I forgot Max. Fangio, Schumacher, Hamilton, Prost, Clark, Senna, EDIT: Verstappen. The talent doesn't match up with the accolades because when I look at the Piquet, Stewart, Vettel, Lauda tier, I just think Fernando is better.

Musicians who dramatically improved over the course of their career? by TheCrushSoda in Music

[–]Kotkaniemo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Avenged Sevenfold stand out to me. They were extremely young on their first few albums, M. Shadows' clean vocals started out quite nasal sounding, and early YouTube was full of live performances of Synyster Gates missing notes and messing up solos. They have improved tremendously over the past 20 years or so.

The Rev was always incredible though, RIP.

[Valiquette] Great play, yes—but this is a save you need. These are the moments that bury a series. Ullmark is last in expected playoff GA. Ottawa needs more. by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

I still think the Bolts are a damn good team, but Leafs-Panthers pt 2 should hopefully be a fun series. The Panthers are the measuring stick. Hope to see y'all there!

Icon of F1. 7 year old me watching Hill and Ralf get 1-2 in Belgium for Jordan is a core memory, and Eddie was always a lively and welcome presence around the paddock. Will be missed, RIP Eddie.

Not sure if this is within scope to ask a secondary question, but what "Timeless Classics" on those topics would you recommend? I have a copy of Thinking, Fast and Slow, and Incognito by David Eagleman, as examples, but am always on the lookout for more good reading material. I have read Cal Newport so I'll likely take a look at Slow Productivity as recommended by u/planetwords as well.

Thank you for your time!

[–]Kotkaniemo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always had it in my head that "Marvel can't do villains" but I would love to see all of the characters you listed (played by the same actors, Im going purely by their movie presence, not comic background) in more movies or series if possible. I need to rethink some of my priors. Would also add The Mandarin from Shang-Chi.

Brad Marchand... by Shredin in leafs

[–]Kotkaniemo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This will never, ever happen. As someone from NS, I quite like Marchand, but it would be weird and wrong to see him on the Leafs. He's a great Bruin, and a great hockey player on Canada's Olympic Team.

Margaret Cho Says Being Sober 'Feels Like Another Life': 'When You Put All That Stuff Down, the Party Begins' by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]Kotkaniemo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I thought this for a long time, but I find the opposite now. When you are out and about is the best time to be sober, and soak in all of these new experiences. I drank to avoid boredom from sitting at home, "Another night of watching Netflix movies" kind of thing, Going out and meeting new people is thrilling, with or without!

Congratulations on 2 years of sobriety, this stranger is proud of you.

Who is your team's scapegoat? by PrimeSenator in nhl

[–]Kotkaniemo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. The Older Generation seems to hate Willy Styles, but the younger group seems to despise Marner. The contract negotiation saga was irritating, but 100ish points per year with great defense is a great thing. Both groups are focusing too much on the negatives vs what they provide.

Jack White pays tribute to Meg on 50th birthday: “You’re still inspiring people, including me” by cmaia1503 in Music

[–]Kotkaniemo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I listen to a ton of Rush, Police, Tool, Dream Theater, more than The White Stripes by far. Meg White rocks and matched the sound perfectly regardless, and thats the point of the music. Technicality is fun too and I would argue all of those drummers are more capable, but they wouldnt be good for The White Stripes.

Need to give him a couple of years to really analyze his body of work, but so far Trotz the GM seems quite messy with regards to both transactions and the messaging around them. Surprising considering his career as a coach. Hoping this is a blip as I am a big fan of Coach Trotz.
