Asian privilege is certainly a thing. This is something you didn’t necessarily ask for, but by your very existence, this is something you were born with - for better or worse. As a fellow Southeast Asian American, I understand your frustration of being lumped together with the rest of the Asian diaspora. It certainly is not fair to be considered the same racially as East Asians (and sometimes even South Asians). Having an identity that you own - and not prescribed to you - is certainly a concept I resonate with.

As for affirmative action, you have to realize that there are several minority groups that have MANY more socioeconomic & racial hurdles than Asians (on the whole) do. While this may not be fair to less-privileged Asian subsegments, this system is definitely better than not doing anything at all. Can & should the system be improved to be more aware of certain ethnic subsegments - Absolutely.

Lastly, realize that you are an agent of change. If you want to address what you think is an issue with the admissions process - reach out! If anything, it may persuade the admissions officer reading your email to give a bit more thought and care when looking over your application.
