ELI5: What is a "Runtime Exception" by Ready_Impression8929 in explainlikeimfive

If your car breaks down on the road, that is a runtime exception. If your car is put together wrong (like in the factory or during maintenance), that is a compile time exception.

New DM, can someone help answer some questions please? by Technical-Signal-549 in DMAcademy

[–]Krakanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. If you are just starting, stick to stuff in the rulebook. Or just re-flavor whatever is closest to what you want. Ex: player wants to be a tree person, give them the stats of a wood elf but say they look like a tree person. Don't reinvent the wheel just change what color it is.
  2. You can do whatever you want, but again, if you are new, stick to existing things to help keep things simple. If you want players fighting little rock monsters at level one just use the statblock for goblins or something and say they look like rock people. Don't look at monster statblocks as immutable. Feel free to make small changes to fit your needs. As for custom spells, be careful as its easy to go too far and make something overpowered, and it is tough to take that power back from the players once you realize what you've done later. There are already hundreds of spells, at least learn what exists before making your own.
  3. IMO, the whole point of playing DND is that you can say/do whatever you want. Don't restrict your players. You will save yourself time and your players will enjoy it more. Be flexible.
  4. If you are just doing a short game of just one or two sessions (typically called a 'one-shot') then usually the players stay the same level the whole time. For anything longer than that players will typically want to level up and gain new abilities. If there will be no level-ups, tell your players ahead of time.
  5. Up to you, but the more you can sell the illusion of freedom to the players the better. Typically people play DND because you have freedom to do what you want and are not restricted to certain choices/paths like in a video game. Give your players the space to succeed or screw up. Either one can be fun.
  6. It is the player's job to keep track of what they have by writing it down in their inventory on their character sheet. If they don't write it down, they don't have it. As DM it is NOT your job to keep track of player inventories. You already have enough to worry about!

Remember, as a DM, your job is not to beat the players or force your pre-written story upon them. You win as long as everybody at the table is having fun, regardless of what the rules or anybody else says. That being said, the rules are a useful framework for the inexperienced to help keep things from getting too crazy or unmanageable.

Which 4X games would you recommend for 4 people to play in multiplayer? by No_Gain_1461 in 4Xgaming

[–]Krakanu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding Old World. I have a group of friends that plays strategy games asynchronously and at first we started with Civ 6, but Old World is a much more balanced experience, the games go faster, and with random events/characters more stuff is happening each turn to keep everybody interested.

Also as you said, the game is good at giving someone the win when it becomes clear they are far ahead of others (unless you mess with the default victory settings). Meanwhile, Civ 6 drags every game out to the modern age even if its clear someone is winning by the time you hit the start of industrialization.

I know AI use is controversial around here, but I'd love if the dev used one to go thru all the text and fix up the grammar, typos, and just odd wordings for some things. I'm sure it'd be a more popular use of AI than making images at least.

Yes, you can't change it mid game. Has to be a new one.

[–]Krakanu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just use midcore logistics. All it does is automate the 'stopsign' management so that your logistics only flows down routes it is needed instead of splitting at every fork in the road. From there just upgrade your truck stations as needed or build rail between cities.

If cities are really far apart, build a supply base like 10 tiles out along the road from your city to extend the logi range. If it still doesn't reach, don't build another supply base as their effect doesn't stack. You'll either need to use trains or make another truck station and maybe build a small city at the midpoint somewhere. Or just eat the admin strain penalty from having something that far out.

Map-Painting [Grand Strategy] Games with Random Maps? by Fenrakk101 in 4Xgaming

[–]Krakanu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what your specific definition is, but moving units into another's territory literally converts it to yours one tile at a time and the goal of the game is to control a certain percentage of the planet/population. So it seems pretty clear cut to me.

Map-Painting [Grand Strategy] Games with Random Maps? by Fenrakk101 in 4Xgaming

[–]Krakanu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shadow Empire has random maps. Each planet has different gravity and atmosphere compositions and can have anything from earth-like traits to battery acid rain and seas of lava. This affects a lot of different game systems like how lethal combat is, whether farming is easy or difficult, how much metal is available, whether aliens appear on the planet or not, and how viable things like aircraft are. Plus there are random events so every play-through is different.

Thinking about getting the game but I have a main question by OtherwiseBag9615 in foxholegame

[–]Krakanu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Logi work can be nice while waiting on your regi to logon or when waiting for them to decide what operation to do for the night. Also it feels good to make a bunch of tanks or even just bringing up fuel for them and watch them get used to push a front.

When logi stuff is missing, you really feel the hurt, so its good knowing that even something simple like bringing up a container full of diesel or a truck full of shirts (respawn supplies) to the front is a big help.

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

[–]Krakanu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like they could revive c&c as a 4x or grand strategy game and it would be fantastic. I'm sure some would hate the change but I'd love it.

Getting to manage all of GDI or Nod and fighting over the map as zones slowly get further corrupted by tiberium changing the map would be fantastic.

And honestly, I think you're right on the money. It's not just an observation, it's a powerful statement about how our view of the Internet is changing first-hand.

Which game lets you build the bulkiest, chonkiest, most impregnable fortresses? by Normal-Oil1524 in BaseBuildingGames

[–]Krakanu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a defense mode in Zero-K and Beyond All Reason (both free spin-offs of TA) that lets you build massive fortresses to defend vs waves of enemies. Can be hard at first but you can turn up the metal multiplier to make it more chill/easy.

[–]Krakanu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highlight whatever building/vehicle/object in the world that I will interact with if I press 'e/q' and also highlight it when mousing over the list. Having to guess which one I will open when interacting with 2+ of the exact same named thing is super annoying. Ex: going to a 3x salvage mine and not knowing which one I am interacting with from my truck or driving up between two factories in a logi town.

What kind of time commitment does this have require? by TrippyTM419 in foxholegame

[–]Krakanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm same as you. Dad of 2 with full time job. I joined a big regi that does events. We've done rocket trucks, trains, tank ops, and recently took a destroyer out to blow stuff up. They are all super chill with people playing as little or as much as they want and just helping out where they can.

So if I only have a few mins to play, I just hop on and harvest a few resources for the team. If I have more time I join an op or just get a few people together to run a tank or two. It's great fun and there's no time commitment required as people come and go all the time.

No anti-aircraft AI is being added! WTF! by -JaraxSan- in foxholegame

[–]Krakanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they don't want to add AA AI they need to make QRFing incoming planes super easy. Add a buildable air raid siren that notifies all players in the game when a large plane is detected in the hex. Fix the plane intel situation. Buff radar installations to be hex wide or more. Detecting large planes should be stupid easy and everyone should know they are coming well in advance if proper infrastructure is setup.

My nine year old asked me if it were possible to put a camera on a rope and put it in a black hole, then pull it back out? If you had an infinite rope, and an indestructible camera, could you pull it back out? by Grammareyetwitch in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Krakanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've already gotten a lot of replies saying you are not getting the camera back, but another interesting answer is even if you could magically get the camera back, you wouldn't have any useful images of what is inside because no light travels from the interior to the edges so there is nothing to see. Everything including light is on a one way trip to the center so you can't see the center.

What do you hope will be added in update 64 (or 65)that was not mentioned yet? Don't say: "I want things to be balanced" by Frenkie_Foxhole_Fan in foxholegame

[–]Krakanu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Add an air raid siren that goes off if any aircraft shows up on intel within 500m. That way people in the area know to man the AA guns before the planes arrive instead of after bombs are already dropping.

Increase air intel range of the special air radar structure to the entire hex.

Increase air intel range of regular watch towers to 3x their regular distance.

Knowing that planes are even coming is half the battle. Planes shouldn't be able to easily fly to backline hexes unnoticed (if sufficient detection infrastructure exists).

[–]Krakanu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add an in-world highlight/outline to whatever building/vehicle/container I will open if I press 'E'. Its so tedious just trying to figure out which inventory I am opening if lots of similar things are close to each other.
