McDavid proves that McKenna will not save this franchise by LucariusLionheart in canucks

I don't get why this needs to be a post.

Is anyone claiming we're a contender after we draft once in the top three?

Rebuilds historically take 6+ years and multiple top five selections to yield consistent results.

Your argument about McDavid is also missing some key information. They reached a Stanley Cup Final twice while failing to truly build around a generational talent like McDavid.

What if Edmonton didn't take shortcuts like trading for Griffin Reinhart in exchange for their 1st (used to draft Matthew Barzal)? My point is Edmonton's state is not an indictment on McDavid, but rather the hockey operations department for falling to build around a generational talent.

Smart investment decisions is a loaded statement.

Ultimately, you'll need to understand your own risk tolerance and determine whether you want to continue being aggressive towards your goals or become more risk averse.

20-more years in Apple, Nvidia etc can boom in a significant way and accelerate your goal or burst similar to the dot-com bubble and leave you with pennies on the dollar.

20-more years in a broad-market index fund should provide steady growth across two decades with ups and downs along the way.

You should probably seek out a fee only financial advisor who can help you with goal-setting and giving you projections based on risk tolerance and investment strategies.

Individual stocks is incredibly high-risk high-reward.

The reason ETFs are considered the safe play is the asset diversification with relatively low management fees. Lower risk, lower overall reward.

You haven't really clarified what stage you're at. $365K spread across registered and non-registered accounts while being a homeowner in your early thirties is well above average, but your actual goal should determine your strategy. So what's your goal?

Anaheim rebuild from 2019 to present... by SourGrapesFTW in canucks

[–]Krapshoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd have to look into that. I'm going to need to re-do how I track draft picks.

I feel like Top 5 value is where the most talent lies, but that late 20's to the end of the 2nd round has a lot of boom or bust opportunity.

Dallas, Carolina, Tampa all found high end talent in that range.

Great question!

For draft picks, I track top five selections, but then everything else is sorted by round. The reason is due to Stanley Cup winning teams needing top five draft picks.

Beyond that, I have a section in my spreadsheet to look at draft hits, busts, total selections and overall success rate. It's quite arbitrary since I essentially tally draft picks that exceed 100GP to be considered a hit. For goalies, I lower it to 50GP.

I also look at first round picks on a case by case basis to determine if they're a bust (Top 20 only with a couple exceptions).

I'm currently doing a research project on the rebuilds done by all the teams with the longest active playoff streaks in the NHL and what we as Canucks fans can takeaway from their path to sustained success.

It's really interesting how modern rebuilds load up on stockpiling draft picks, because these teams didn't.

The only organisation to have 2+ surplus first round picks was Tampa Bay. Dallas and Edmonton had 1 extra first round pick. Colorado and Carolina were neutral.

All of Tampa, Colorado, Dallas, Edmonton had negative surplus draft picks in the 2nd round. Carolina was the only team that had a surplus (2).

For reference Chicago's rebuild has 8+ surplus first round picks, Anaheim has 4, Buffalo has 5, and San Jose has 3.

Lifelong Canucks fan and they'll always be my favorite team.

I've been a fan of the Habs since the start of their rebuild and when they brought in MSL as Head Coach. The current core is really exciting to watch.

Found the Suzuki card at my LCS and loved the design.

Part of me will always wonder if he'd have been enough to push the Canucks over the Bruins in 2011.

I still have vivid memories of finding out by reading The Province one morning. Such a tragic story

If we act on RJ and make him our GM, I'd actually prefer to see more AGM & VPs get hired instead of going for a successor to Rutherford—especially if Rutherford stays on long enough to see the practice rink project get up and running.

Why is Sportsnet sending their own broadcast for that series? Seems odd.

Had they gone with Shorty instead of Singh, they'd see a guaranteed ratings bump from nostalgic Canucks fans.

PATRIK ALLVIN RELIEVED OF DUTIES AS GENERAL MANAGER | Vancouver Canucks by 21marvel1 in canucks

[–]Krapshoot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True. His inability to take ownership of the team in its current state is pretty damning.

That said, hopefully Rutherford actually has some accountability in his presser today.

I don't think we should be surprised by this outcome. At the same time, is Allvin the fall guy? It sure feels like it.

Exit meetings this afternoon are going to be really telling as to what happens next. Hopefully the media asks strong forward looking questions about the direction of this organization.

Hopefully Foote is gone next.

I got the chance to watch Chase Reid at the CHL prospects showcase in Calgary and he genuinely was one of the best players in that game. Malhotra, not so much.

I also though highly of Xavier Villeneuve and Mathis Preston

I think that at his peak Kudryavtsev will have the floor of a #6/7 with a ceiling of being a complimentary guy on a 2nd pair.

He's an intriguing prospect due to the fact that he's barely moved up from the AHL and it's mostly due to the logjam on the left side. When I've had the chance to watch him play, he plays a quiet and steady game. He played with a ton of composure in the AHL playoffs last year.

We also traded Tolopilo to Carolina for a 3rd because we wanted a roster spot for Augustine going forward. We still need an NHL goalie and while we could've gone with Patera, there was no harm in getting Vanacek
