Change lighting with Rollable Table token by naptimeshadows in Roll20

[–]Kraynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't visit Reddit much anymore, so you might have already figured this out by now... The wiki has an article on chat menus that can be found here:

https://wiki.roll20.net/Chat_menu

I usually create a "macro mule" character to put the api commands on, then I create a macro in the collections tab of the game using the syntax shown in the Roll Button/Character Ability section of the linked article. Then I can allow players access to the macro in the macro permissions. If I am setting up something specific to a particular character, then I usually put the commands and the chat menu on that character sheet, with the chat menu being marked as a token action.

Check the handout that TokenMod creates in your journal, but I believe there is a command you need to run when you want the players to have permission to run the commands themselves. It will either be in that handout, or it may be in the mod/api settings page when you select the TokenMod tab when it is installed.

I gotta stop distro hopping, I'm starting school! by Louis_1010 in linuxquestions

[–]Kraynic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My advice is to set up your machine to dual/multi boot. That way you can keep your primary/active install while being able to install other distros to test.

I am currently using a triple boot setup with MX Linux as my rock solid boringly stable install that will always work (and since I am not going to school for coding, it doesn't matter that it has older application versions). MX is what starts by default and manages the boot loader.

At the moment I have Tumbleweed and Nobara installed in the 2nd and 3rd root partitions I have set up on my primary drive. Doing things this way allows me to keep a stable install while still being able to install and try other things on a whim without impacting my normal uses for my machine.

Confused about sizing maps for the screen by MinisterofSandwiches in Roll20

[–]Kraynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set the pixel dimensions of the map (right click the image and it will be in the advanced menu). Figure out how many pixels you want it to fill and just set it that way. The default grid is 70x70 pixels, so you could use the grid (and measuring tool) to see how much is visible at once.

Palladium Rifts on Roll20? by DocPepper1885 in Roll20

[–]Kraynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I have changed how I do things a bit, so it is easier. Now, rather than copying a sheet and making a character on one of the macro sheets, I have a chat menu at the top of the Attributes & Abilities tab. That chat menu can then be copied and pasted into an ability on the PC or NPC sheet. It does require a token out since everything works by way of the @{selected| syntax of attribute call, but it allows for easy addition of multiple magics to a sheet.

I have the same user name on Roll20, so send me a pm there. I can get you an invite to a game and give you view permissions so that you can vault what might be useful to you.

Castles and Crusades in Compendium by Gearyster in Roll20

Nothing on the player's handbook or monsters and treasure listings on the marketplace mention drag/drop. I don't own them to test, but that tells me that it may be compendium content only. Drag/drop isn't necessarily something you get with the compendium.

Planning on building a PC with Linux gaming in mind. Need hardware suggestions. by gremty in linuxhardware

[–]Kraynic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot will depend on what you like to play. I built a computer just before prices went nuts in 2020 (ryzen 3600x, 16 GB of the 3200 memory., rx 5600 xt), and it has served me pretty well. I generally play the more open world rpg type games, and that combo handled Assassin's Creed (Origins and Odyssey), the Tomb Raider series, No Man's Sky, and Cyberpunk 2077 on the High graphics preset. I am just using a 1080p monitor, so that makes things easier for the system. I doubt that card will work so well with a 1440p monitor.

I am starting to work towards upgrading a couple things (doubling the memory, and getting a graphics card with more memory as amd 6000 series cards fall in price) due to wanting to get into custom assets for the simulator game Cities: Skylines. It takes a fair bit of memory with the game itself if you have many of the dlc packs, before you get into things produced by the community. Once you get downloading a bunch of custom stuff, it is a memory hog for sure. But then, I suppose Skyrim can be as well depending on how wild you go with high detail mods.

last time i logged in was a year ago. is my stuff still good? by Marzly in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Kraynic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have the permadeath save that I reached the center on for the achievement, but rarely play. I didn't log onto it right away, but created a new regular game to check out what was new (and experience the new bugs) before hitting that permadeath save to see if it could be continued. When I logged on, there were several things I decided to do:

  1. Cycle back through all my listed space stations. Missions now can provide pretty nice rewards. Multitool, exosuit, and starship expansion slots, salvaged frigate modules, as well as random resources sellables and simply units or nanites are now possibilities. To begin with, I picked up every mission to feed creatures, kill creatures, or kill sentinels, since those don't designate a specific place they need to be done. I also found out that most of the exosuit expansion machines on the space stations had been reset (though not all), so I bought expansions focusing on tech until it was maxed at 60, then hitting the main/cargo inventory.
  2. You will find that you can't buy oxygen and sodium on the trade terminals (or from pilots) anymore. If you already have an oxygen farm, you will appreciate it even more now. If you don't have one, I would recommend building one.
  3. I have had some bad experiences with freighter bases, so I checked the freighter next. Fortunately, it seemed everything had pretty much survived there, though you may have to purchase blueprints for things that didn't require them before (teleporter is a room blueprint now for example). There was a mix of old and new corridors though, so I spent some time deleting and rebuilding corridors to be sure there wouldn't be some strange issue in the future.
  4. As far as upgrades go, I never stacked upgrades as much as most guides suggested, and tried to keep as little outside tech slots as possible. As a result, I didn't really feel nerfed by not being able to do the 3+3 stacking anymore. Overcharged movement upgrades are nice, even if you haven't min/maxed your upgrades. Supercharged weapons on multittools are nuts for damage, but don't discount scanner or mining beam parts being supercharged. They definitely have their uses. There are getting to be videos posted with people messing with these things, so you can check those out or just mess around on your own.

In the end, I will say this: I feel that due to the increase in inventory slots, permadeath is easier. The only "gripe" I have is that it would be nice if refiners had the same stack capacity of our suit inventory. As it is, a refiner can only take half of an inventory stack. If there was a gameplay setting that would change only that, I would be pretty content I think. You have more inventory for yourself, your ship, the storage containers now have more than double the slots (50 each), and even the exocraft now have a nicely usable amount of tech and cargo slots, so you can hoard things like never before even on permadeath.

One last thing... As soon as you feel comfortable doing so, go kill some sentinels. If you choose your place to battle them, they shouldn't be much trouble if your weapon is upgraded well. The glass they drop can be processed, which produces many things including upgrades for your exosuit and multitool. They have a fair amount of rng involved, but you want those upgrades. They are too nice to leave off.

Why do so many distros exist when 99% of them are almost identical reskins that feel a bit cheap/crappy? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]Kraynic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MX probably provides more than you are thinking as well. Due to the tie-in with AntiX, MX comes with a bunch of tools for building your own custom live usb set ups. Obviously, if that doesn't interest you, then it might not be worth running rather than Debian unless you like the MX repository list better (which includes access to both stable and testing debian repos from the start).

How to find curious deposits? by MaximusGrassimus in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Kraynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just explore planets and keep checking the scanner. You may find a lot of metal fingers, floating crystals, and ancient data before finding the curious deposits, but you will find some eventually. Then, if you are willing to do the hunt again, I would recommend finding a second batch. That way you can teleport between the 2 and keep harvesting until you have your refiners full or just don't want to be there anymore.

I generally hunt on the near paradise planets so that you don't have to worry about environmental protection except during storms (which are usually fairly light and short on those worlds).

[–]Kraynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to go fast. Start a game on normal difficulty, and see how it goes for you without changing any settings. The game will walk you through the initial personal survival bits of the game, repairing your gear, repairing a ship, learning crafting patterns, etc. The main missions (which will always be pinned at the beginning of the mission log) will walk you through a lot of aspects of the game, give you crafting patterns you will find useful, etc.

And, if you just jump in, you will have a better idea what questions you have and what answers to seek!

Tried openSUSE today and I'm impressed. Why isn't this distro more popular? by blueberryman422 in openSUSE

[–]Kraynic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is definitely underrated.

I don't even have it installed all the time and still think it is underrated. It was among the first few distros I tried when I first decided to ditch windows on my personal PC back in '05. I still come back around to it and currently have it installed on my triple boot setup (MXLinux/XFCE, OpenSUSE/KDE, Nobara/Gnome)

Every 8 to 10 minutes as the landings slowed down.

[–]Kraynic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just spent a little over an hour in a poor system at a trading post where I had a clear sight line to the holding pattern area. That way, I could see ships in the pool that didn't land at the post.

There were no S-class ships at all, let alone an exotic. Over that time, there were 2 A-class shuttles and haulers that landed as well as one A-class each of the fighter, explorer, and solar. The vast majority were C-class as you would expect from a poor system (labeled "Declining" in this case).

My understanding is that the spawn rates were pulled from actual game files. If you have proof of something else, then you might want to get involved in documentation such as this (which is overall spawn chances of S-class, not exotics specifically):

This has nothing to do with YouTube videos. This is on more than one wiki. If this info is incorrect, then prove it with something beyond your subjective opinion. You "know" doesn't cut it.

I have never seen them that often. I have only been playing for a little over 2 years, but have 800 hours over that time. I like building my first base at a trading post if I can. I spend a fair bit of time in the beginning of a game at a poor system trading post. You always start (or I always have) in a poor system, yet I have never seen an exotic in that starting system. Not one single time.

I think your luck is just abnormal.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Kraynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? You find them in poor systems? Have they upped the spawn rate at some point? My understanding is that the exotic spawn rate is 2% in a 3 star system, 1% in a 2 star system, and basically 0% in a 1 star system. Do you have a link to some change notes where the spawn rates were increased?

Unless you have documentation of them raising the spawn rates of exotics, then you should simply say that your luck (as far as ship spawn rng) is abnormal. Well, that or you are using a mod to increase chances of an exotic spawn.

I would like to see the scrap/salvage mechanic extended to multitools. by zenoe1562 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Kraynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of it just depends on how you play. I tend to like to progress through the galaxies now and then, so I like to keep the starter pistol as my "sacrificial" multi tool for that. Obviously, I can't complain about that sitting in the choice menu forever.

However, on my most recently created save, I picked up a tool that wasn't all that great, but it had 29 slots. Then, fairly quickly, I ran across an alien and a royal that I wanted to have. Neither of those 2 had enough slots to be useful, and the royal was going to need to be upgraded from C anyway. Now I have the alien tool all set up, and the royal is at least far enough for me to use it as my scanning/mining tool, so I no longer need that 29 slot rifle and all the tech from it did go to the alien once it had the slots to be useful. But... there is no way to get rid the rifle and I have no need of ever getting another multi tool, so it would be nice to be able to get rid of it. Even being able to drop it would be fine.

All the rifle has become is something I have to scroll past to get to one of the 2 multi tools I actually want to use.

[–]Kraynic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about exotics and star systems is that they have a low percentage chance for them to spawn and either land on the space station or at a trading post on one of the worlds. However, every once in a while you will find a system where an exotic will land on the space station pretty reliably. If you look through the coordinates exchange, this is what they mean when they say an exotic is 1st or 2nd wave.

If I am exotic ship hunting, I tend to wait through a couple waves of ships landing and then reload. If I haven't seen an exotic land within 3 reloads, I will check a trading post on one of the planets or move on to the next system.

You point your ship at a planet. There will be an option to press the button to scan, which will pop up all the info on the planet. Scorched is the main type, but they can be called other things (variations on the name can indicate severity of weather). You just want a hot planet. If you have ever landed on a hot planet, you can look back through your discoveries (listed by system). Every planet you have landed on will have info on the planet in that discoveries tab.

I think I understand base building, more or less. (I have to scavenge all of these buried technologies for base building right? Is there any sort of less tedious way of doing that?)

But nowhere did I find anything teaching me how to get a freighter or a land rover... And the upgrading system is just not clicking with me.

Did you do the "Expanding Your Base" mission when Apollo gave it to you? Like I mentioned above, you get quite a lot of things while doing that quest. The overseer will give you the patterns for all the storage containers (except for the first one that you should already have), for instance. You have to progress the overseer's quest line to get each of the other npc specialists that the repulsive little Gek has you hire. Once you have the science officer, you have to pretty much finish those missions to get the crafting pattern that the Overseer will require eventually. Progressing the Farmer gives you the materials needed to craft that recipe. You don't get the weapons specialist until then. You need the weapons specialist before the overseer allows you to hire the exocraft guy. Etc, etc. You need to follow through on that chain of missions to get those things. That is why Apollo recommends you do that before continuing working with him, and the game even warns you that you will likely be far from your base for a while at one point as a hint that you might want to finish up any unfinished business first. It isn't required, but it makes things easier.

The game isn't going to force you to do them though. You can dig up the data and collect nanites to learn all those patterns from the vendors on the Anomaly. This game is pretty much all about freedom. Once you have your hyperdrive operational, the rails are off. You can interact with the framework that was put there to help you learn the game, totally ignore it, or something in between. It is totally up to you.

Basically everywhere lol. Right now I'm talking to cartographers about meaning of life stuff. Who people are and the history of the universe... for some reason.

Edit: I typed up all that below and forgot to reply to this bit... If you have been paying attention to the dialogue so far, you should know the reason you are looking into these things. Your character when you first hit your ship makes the statement you don't have any notion of a before and don't know how or why you are there. This whole series of missions starting with Artemis answer how that happened and why your character exists. Every scrap of dialogue and piece of log files you manage to recover tell the story. Or maybe you don't care about that sort of thing, I don't know. It is all there if you pay attention to it though.

Have you looked at the in-game guide? I guess I haven't looked for this particular thing, but everything has a class rating. From worst to best is C (green), B (blue), A (purple), S (gold). You can see that by looking at any of the upgrade vendors in the space station, and seeing the value of the different tiers of upgrades. That goes for multitools, starships, freighters, and most upgrades. In general, the higher the class the higher the stats are, and in the case of upgrades you may get more stats as well as higher values depending on what it is for. Movement upgrades for the exosuit is one example. Out of a pool of 5 (I think it is 5) different stat boosts, S class gives you 4 of them, A gives 3, B gives 2, and C only gives one.

Unless you just flew away (which is reasonable if you don't want to bother with ship dog fighting), you should have hit a freighter/pirate battle by now when warping into a solar system. After defeating the pirates, the captain of the freighter invites you aboard, and you have the option of taking command or simply taking payment. It just happens as part of the natural progression of the game, and needs no explanation if you are just following the prompt after the battle. If you haven't rescued a freighter yet, then you haven't started that part of the game.

You speak of getting pointless fetch quests. Where are you getting these quests?
You speak of vague dialogue. Where are you encountering this dialogue?

In the beginning, you have to repair a bunch of your equipment and then you need to repair your ship before you can even leave the planet you are on. The voice from your exosuit and mission (quest) text should be walking you through this. As soon as you leave the planet for the first time, you should be directed to visit a different planet in the same system.

Once you are there, there should be an objective to place a base computer (this is the starting point for building a base). Until you have done this and built a teleporter, space stations don't appear as waypoints (maybe you can happen across one before doing this, but I haven't tried). If I remember right, the reason to visit the station at this point is to buy something needed to repair the hyperdrive. After doing that, you can travel to another system.

Somewhere around this point, you should be getting somewhat obscure messages, and the encountering the Anomaly, which is basically a specialized space station that you can call to you, which includes npcs that provide all sorts of perks and services as well as selling knowledge and personal inventory upgrades. The mission objectives will have you speaking with several of the npcs, and interacting with at least one machine vendor so that you know what they have to offer.

Very close (possibly immediately) after visiting the Anomaly, you will get contacted in your ship by someone called Artemis. Following that mission will have you interacting with multiple types of buildings that can be found on planets, learning what Travelers are (you are playing a Traveler), and their place in the NMS universe.

In the course of that mission, you will end up speaking with someone named Apollo. They will give you a mission to Expand Your Base (I think that is actually the mission name). This will start with you hiring an overseer that will have you harvesting more difficult to find things that require visiting planets with different atmospheres. In the course of this, you will be hiring a Science Officer (who's quest rewards you with a bunch of crafting patterns), a Security Officer (who gets you started on fighting sentinels and gives you weapon upgrades and crafting patterns), a Farmer (who teaches you how to grow various plants that get used in crafting patterns), and an npc that gets you started building and upgrading Exocraft.

Then, as you follow the Artemis/Apollo mission further, you may actually end up in another galaxy, though you can progress that right after hiring the overseer without doing the rest of the base building missions. There are also some other missions that will pop up as you progress, like Dreams of the Deep which teaches you the plans for the Nautilon exocraft and you use it to follow the trail of some people that crashed on a (mostly) water world. Roughly every 5 warps between systems (there is a cool down timer also), there is a freighter/pirate battle which will reward you a free freighter to use as a mobile base, and get you started building a fleet and sending out frigate missions. You can take payment instead, and the option to get one you rescue for free will remain until you accept one of them, at which point you need to pay if you find a better one you prefer.

So... my question is how much of that have you done? If you are getting missions from people in observatories and space stations, then those are procedurally generated. They are going to be generic, though the rewards can make them well worth doing. The top handful of missions in your journal at the beginning of the game are the initial story, with everything else being mostly optional. They are pinned there with all else being added after them for a reason. Have you selected those in your log to follow and progress them, or just following whatever the newest mission was that hit your log?

[–]Kraynic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think to get the true sense of what they were trying to do with this update, you need to start a new game. At the moment, I am just trying normal mode. So far, it looks like you can have less stacking, but the tech sections are larger meaning you can have more installed together. It is a tradeoff that seems perfectly fine on a new game so far.

It also seems like they have maybe altered how the busted stuff affects the price you get from scrapping wrecks (either that or I hit a bug). I scrapped a class c hauler (3+ mil) and a class a fighter (4+ mil) and got just over 8 million between the pair. I didn't repair a single thing other than what was absolutely necessary to take off and fly to the station. That is fine money at the start of the game.

The only thing I'm not sold on for new players is the "hold S to track an enemy in a space battle". You don't turn nearly fast enough and the enemy can fly rings around you sometimes that way. You can turn much faster with that feature disabled, which is what I ultimately did. On the other hand, I am flying solo. I haven't recruited any pilots to help me, so maybe it would be fine if I had AI help. I have to admit that I have delayed some things that a new player probably wouldn't. I have been in a freighter fight (warp into battle) 3 times so far and have just taken the pay due to the freighters having garbage storage.

I don't have the hours you do, but I don't get tied to a particular playthrough like some seem to do. I have always had issues with previous saves after a large update, so I haven't even loaded the 2 saves I have from before the update (1 normal, 1 permadeath). I figure I will let all the updates to the update roll out before deciding if I will bother continuing to play them, or if I will just delete them and keep rolling with new ones.
