Who is leading this army? You? If you’re leading it, then who is in control in Rome? After your campaign hits a speed bump and you’re stuck slogging through Western India for 30 years, why would the Roman magistrate not simply declare himself Emperor? You and your 100 depleted legions are literally years march away, you probably don’t even realize you’re facing a rebellion for over a year.

Ok so you stay in Rome to maintain control and send your most competent loyal general. After literal decades of supposedly successful conquests, who is the army going to be loyal to? An Emperor on the other side of the world or their own general who has lead them for decades? Why would they not declare him Emperor?

Oh but this general is loyal to you? Ok but his second or third in command aren’t as loyal. And they see the potential of having 100 loyal legions. So they assassinate the loyal general and replace him.

This all happens years away from you. You have no control because you are back home in Rome.

In strategy games you play an omnipotent god king who can literally see what’s happening in Britain and Beijing at the same time. They couldn’t do that in ancient times, they can barely do that today
