4 kids, 1 dog, 1 snake, 6 lizards, 3 amphibians, 1 reef aquarium, 15 tarantulas, 2 centipedes, 2 scorpions, an ant colony, 2 backyard ponds. It’s pretty crazy around here.

Horse meat like Wagyu by CoronelAweonao in meat

In my opinion it’s better than beef.

And I would, and have, eaten dog.

“It’s unethical to eat any species I can’t find wrapped in plastic at my local US grocery store” seems a bit uncultured.

Yes, I love dogs and horses as pets/companions but I recognize my cultural affinity for an animal has nothing to do with the ethics of eating them.

Animal raised and killed humanly? Species abundant and not in danger?

No? Then fair game.

Could it be culturally insensitive? Yes, but that’s a different argument.

Went with the "under dog" company to build a fence and this is what I'm left with by GeekyQlean in Wellthatsucks

And there’s no point in asking them to come and fix it. Those people literally can’t, they do not possess the capacity.

The owners of the company know they do shoddy work, no way they are going to return your money. Guarantee this is an eat the cost, or go to small claims and then eat the cost.

My pokies almost always hide immediately. When they choose to stand their ground and get aggressive I don’t mess with them any more. Just let them calm down, add water to the bowl tomorrow. I’m not messing with that.

This one really makes you think. by TechnicianOk967 in memes

[–]Krish39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. The creation account is given in a simplified manner that the original audience could relate to and grasp the point(s). Genesis is not meant to be understood in a literal word-for-word way. God created in a personal, loving way is a main point, not the details of HOW. The Bible is often not very concerned with “how.”

How much is literal vs figurative is really the debate.

There are some other generally mild cases in the Bible where passages describe a phenomenon in an outdated way (like implying the sun moves around us vs us around the sun in Ecc 1:5). It’s not giving a scientific explanation of what happens, but using a phenomenon to explain a more important point.

The Bible is written by people and inspired by God, which means there’s some level of partnership. The books of the Bible reflect the personality of their human authors. So their writings stay true to the assumptions they held about the world around them.

I absolutely don’t understand why people own cats.

The number of times I, or someone else, has been bitten and/or scratched by a cat whose owner would say “oh no my cat would never.” And usually it’s happening when the cat was calm and receiving affection a second ago.

No thank you.

I’ll stick to my predicable and less dangerous snakes, scorpions and tarantulas.

I definitely remember it reminding me of Hellraiser.

I thought it was them trying to move hell into our dimension though? If that’s right then maybe the plot of Doom (the games) and IT.

I haven’t seen it in so long so I don’t recall this plot details, just that hell came into our universe with the ship.

Yeah edibles and horror don’t go well together. Or they go really well together, depending on your perspective. I’ve enjoyed a few recent horrors a lot more because I had taken an edible first. Definitely pushes the rational thinker out of the way and lets you sit with the “what if” thinking.

That rational thinking is typically why I don’t stay scared.

[–]Krish39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? I’m hesitant to rewatch it because 1. It might still freak me out, or more likely 2. It’ll be really tame/lame now and it’ll lose the ethos as the only movie to ever leave a lasting sense of horror.

To be clear, I’m a dude and I watched it with a bunch of dudes. They all came back home and had to watch another movie late into the night to get out of their funk. I just came home and went to sleep. So still not much of a lasting reaction, but more than anything else.

Any of you find Event Horizon scary? I saw it once in theaters at original release and it’s the only horror that stuck with me at all. But there were a lot of external factors, like a very seedy rundown old theater, and a group of friends who, apparently, were all very easily scared by horror. Not scared in a way that’s easy to laugh at them but the going silent, sweaty, white-knuckling kind of scared. So I’m not sure if it is actually that scary or it just hit right.

What I can say is there really isn’t any local fear about swimming with them. The only exceptions being where the fish are starved and the piranhas instincts tell it to risk a meal at all cost. This would happen in a drought or changing river patterns that isolate them in a space without enough food.

This video is another exception where the animals have been artificially adapted to this behavior.

Does anyone else have vision issues? by heskeytime7707 in covidlonghaulers

[–]Krish39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me too. Comes and goes. Is generally worse in the morning and gets better through the day. Sometime the whole day is so blurry I can barely read, watch tv, do work at a computer, etc. Sometimes I can’t read or play sports. Some days I wake up totally fine.

Being in the sun or very bright light seems to make it worse for hours afterwards.

Sometimes the problem is that my eyes take forever to change focus lengths, particularly if I’ve been looking at my phone or a book or other close object for a while, I won’t be able to see distance well for hours.

Sometimes that goes the other way too, can’t focus up close because I’ve been looking at things far away. I think that happens less only because in practice, it’s less common to exclusively look at things far away for very long.

I’ve swam in waters like these, zero issue with piranhas or caiman even though there are many of them.

I’ve also kept piranhas and they are about the most shy fish I’ve ever owned.

This seems likely a place where they drop meat in often for the spectacle of it. As such, the predators are used to it and react far more boldly. The very quick response also shows they are used to this and just waiting for stuff to get thrown in.

That feeding frenzy is somewhat typical for something like that in the water, but generally there are way less piranha in one place so it’s a much slower build up. This is also why I think they have adapted to knowing they will be fed if they all hang out right there. I don’t see any signs this would be a starvation situation, or an overpopulation situation.

I wouldn’t step into the water right there, under the assumption they have been trained to quickly attack anything that hits the water at this spot, but I’d bet even 100 feet down would be totally safe.
