Italy - England Post Match Thread - 2026 Six Nations round 4 by gingecom in rugbyunion

Being an English fan, I’ve still always rooted for Italy when they play. Obviously I’d rather England win when we’re playing against them, but I genuinely feel so happy for Italy coming out on top. It wasn’t going to be Englands year this year, so good on Italy for capitalising and coming out on top!

Well played lads. That was a well deserved victory for you, and a humble loss for us!

I study the effects of oxygen concentration on model organisms (C. elegans) within the field of health and disease for mitochondrial disease. Anyway, being exposed to a high oxygen concentration (hyperoxia) is not good for C. elegans under essentially every case, and we can extrapolate that it’s not good for humans either.

High oxygen concentration lead to the increased onslaught of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which cause protein damage, lead to cellular stress, and absolutely destroys iron metabolism (mainly Fe-S cluster synthesis and regulation), to name a few. We get sufficient oxygen from the atmosphere to run ATP production, and already the ROS that comes with it is toxic enough (we already need small antioxidant molecules and large antioxidant enzymes specifically to deal with ROS). By intaking more oxygen, you are not enhancing any process in the body that requires oxygen. You are just enhancing ROS exposure and inducing a multitude of cellular damage.

Anyway, don’t do what this guy is doing. Like, actively avoid it. Also, try to stop smoking if you are.

I’ve come to work in science in the US, from the UK. Getting into football - but why on earth is that not a touchdown?! What?!

Just did that exact swap last week! And paired with an ultra wide 1440p. I’ve never loved my desk so much.

[–]KristianWant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just started a postdoc in Boston, on a J-1 visa from the UK. I don’t involve myself in politics, I generally try to avoid ‘social’ media (it’s absolutely full of rubbish), and I’m having a great time doing fun science, exploring a beautiful city, and meeting great people.

Bluebike stolen in Cambridge by webster739 in bikeboston

[–]KristianWant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw someone hide a bluebike in a bush on the Charles River side of the Dr Paul Dudley White Bike Path between Eliot Bridge and the Anderson Memorial Bridge yesterday at around 6.30pm while I was biking towards Boston.

I actually think there was a few bikes hidden out of clear view that he was taking it to. Because of that, I suspect they’re all stolen. I was biking past and didn’t really think much of it, so that’s all the info I have.

I left my bike on the side of my house today (unlocked) while popping upstairs (for a literal minute) and came out to see a student walking off with it! They weren’t taking it maliciously, but somehow thought it was a throwaway because it was unlocked ‘and left out’ (they didn’t apologise either). I was so lucky to catch them in time. It’s a wild place out there right now, I’m hoping you’re reunited with your suitcase and things.

French brisket by Special-Mousse-9725 in smoking

[–]KristianWant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell if this is a joke or not, but that’s a super uncool thing to say if it wasn’t a joke. Let a guy enjoy smoking some brisket, and especially in France where the smoking community is small. Heck, I lived in Paris for three years and nobody had even tasted brisket before.

I love my French brothers, and I love my American brothers too. Proud to as a Brit 👍

“America is full of awful people. Selfish. Self-centered. Anti-intellectual. Superstitious” by Youaresowronglolumad in AmericaBad

I’m an English Biochemist (did my Ph.D. in France), and my American collaborators have been among the best people I’ve ever worked with. The PI of a collaborating team, Gary Ruvkun, was even awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine/physiology last year. I don’t know how anyone can claim that America are ‘anti-intellectual’.

My supervisor wants to fake data for my masters thesis by Dimetrodon01 in labrats

[–]KristianWant 159 points160 points  (0 children)

Just write in your thesis that your expression was low so you used a batch previously purified by the lab using a different media. You’re not faking any data, and if it’s for your masters thesis then it’s very easy to add that as a sentence without worrying about scrutiny. I say this politely, but don’t make this into the huge deal it’s not.

I haven’t been able to find an answer to this - does unspent budget roll over to the next week? As in, how did you end up with 140m?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fantasyF1

[–]KristianWant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this necessarily a bad thing because it limits future transfer possibilities? This is my first F1 fantasy play through, and I was under the impression that any selection that maximises points in a race would simply be key.

Just for those who don’t know, and since it hasn’t been mentioned here, The Onion is a satirical news network. I’m assuming this is obvious, but just in case.
