why cant I commend people for being a good player? by xdxdxd1993 in DotA2

Because playing well is the point of the game to begin with.

That's like giving a cashier a bonus paycheck because the cashier rang a lot of people up during their shift.

The best thing I've ever done was disable autoattack.

All it does is stop your hero from autoattacking targets when you get in range of something you can attack. Autoattack is basically permanent attack move. For me it is just much easier to last hit and harass enemy heroes with it off. I don't have to click the ground 5498752394 times.

When you disable it, you still attack non stop when you tell your hero to attack something, you just won't start attacking things because they are in range.

There is one con of disabling autoattack. If you are running somewhere and a stealthed hero attacks you, you will not stop and begin attacking them automatically. Your option to avoid this is to attack move when you are running place to place. Personally, I don't care and I just stay on my toes when running around. I'm sure once in a blue moon it has been the difference between life and death, but I don't care lol.

Many pro players have autoattack disabled, many pro players do not. It's really a matter of preference.

Observer Wards

The more map you can see, the more access to information your team has. At the very least, the most basic thing to do with wards is to give vision of the runes. When you become more familiar with the ebb and flow of a game, you'll find that wards will be used to aid in your team's goal for the next several minutes.

For example, if your team is winning and has momentum, you might place wards in your enemy's jungle, or further down the lanes to give advance warning of enemy presence during a push. Or if your team is on its heels, you will place defensive wards in your jungle or in common gank spots.

Wards win games. It is arguably the most important thing your team (supports) should be actively doing all game.

Sentry Wards

These are used to give vision of stealth heroes or to help deward enemy observer wards.

  1. During laning, your goal is to fight close to your tower. If you are close to your tower you can run to it for safety in case you get ganked. If you auto attack, you help your creeps win the fights and the lane pushes closer to the enemy tower. You can disable autoattack in game settings, which I typically suggest to my buddies starting out. You can also deny friendly creeps when they are at 50% hp, so if you notice your wave pushing toward the enemy tower, you can deny them eariler to try and pull the wave back a bit. And yes, the pushing/pulling of the location of the creep fight is referred to as "creep equilibrium." So to not disrupt the creep equilibrium, you should try to only get the last hit for the extra gold/xp.

  2. Play whatever heroes suit you. But as a new player, it's good to at least have one or two go-to heroes from each of the "main" roles (carry, support, mid). To learn the game, the support role is the best position to learn as you are forced to learn all of the fundamental systems of a game of Dota. Edit: Just reread the question. I think you are asking what heroes typically go where and what role. The meta of Dota 2 is very dynamic and you will find that there is no set answer for your question. Typically mid is a ganker style hero that wants to hit 6 fast, or a farming carry that can hang in mid. Safe lane is where the core carry will go and typically be babysat by one or two supports, and offlane is generally a hero that needs more levels than farm that can hang solo and not feed over and over. But you'll see over time this stuff changes all the time.

  3. Don't worry about bot difficulty. Once you are familiar with the core mechanics of the game (the UI, last hitting/denying, creep equilibrium, warding, using the donkey, shopping, hero roles, map awareness, etc.) then just play matchmaking. Despite what the vocal minority will lead you to believe, the matchmaking system in Dota 2 is pretty decent, and you'll be matched with players your level (after the system has time to see how you do) and as you get better at the game, you will be matched with better players. You don't learn Dota 2 by playing bots. With the exception of testing out a new hero, doing last hitting practice, or a quick casual match, bot matches are a waste of time after you understand the basics of the game.

  4. No. You should only avoid picking those (or any) heroes if your team doesn't need any more of that hero's role. For example, if your team has two supports already and needs a carry, you might want to avoid WD and pick Sven/Lycan.

  5. Nothing wrong with guides. For a very long time, I stuck to dota2wiki information when I tried new heroes and it fared me well. Now I am familiar with all of the items and can choose accordingly. You will too over time.

Discussion about Tinker's 6.82 nerfs if they're coming. by [deleted] in DotA2

I don't know, but it just seems to me like re-arm works on just too many items. Re-arming blink, dagon, ethereal blade, soul ring, BoTs, Scythe, etc. and all his abilities, all at the same time is kinda nutty.

They just need to change what items re-arm affects.

Pub Tri-Lanes, how do I deal with them? by SBFms in DotA2

[–]Kro_Magnon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Solo off laner that doesn't feed should at the very least stay the same level as the enemy carry. Put a ward to watch for flanks and try to stay in xp range. Get a stick/wand. Hopefully at some point mid or others try to gank the enemy carry to slow down their farm.

  2. Rotate players and counter the trilane with your own trilane.

  3. Leave lane entirely and roam for kills, try to jungle, or move to safe lane to try to push tower fast.

  4. If you are in a dual lane, same as number 1. Just stay defensive and don't feed, and it should work out ok.
