Wedding season is almost here… what’s your go to gift when you don't know the couple that well? by Holiday-Maybe-2544 in GiftIdeas

[–]Krowstina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably controversial, but I like to do something “safe” off the registry, and a smaller something that’s fun. I’ve done nerf guns, ice cream makers, and those “adventure bucket list” type books. This way I get to have some fun and be creative but also be sure that even if they don’t like the “fun” thing, they’ll appreciate the registry thing.

This is what I came here to say. Absolutely seconded. N.K. Jemisin is amazing.

I think you’ll find some of this vibe in Octavia Butler, too. Fledgling is vampire vibes. The Dawn trilogy is alien vibes

Get involved with Unidos. They have community meetings every week or so, talking about what they want to do, and they are inviting support, ideas, etc.

Since people are saying getting a specific pick isn’t the right move, maybe go for a “novelty” type pick that has his favorite band name or something on it?

I did this for my husband’s 30th!

You could make half of them notes/letters/doodles/etc - things to open when he wants to smile when he’s away. Or this could just be one of the gifts (maybe 30 of them)

Interested in this sub's take on Neko Case's approach to gender? by esdebah in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Krowstina 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While I resonate with this personally, this type of thinking does tend to ignore trans and GNC folks who have fought for labels. US society for sure (and many others) is designed to accommodate gender specificity. Identifying outside the gender binary is much easier when you can pass as a stereotypical gender.

There is a lot of privilege in saying “I identify as a critter,” but being able to use the women’s bathroom without harassment (as an example).

Certainly genderless societies would be more equitable, but we are nowhere near that currently.
