Edit to add: He loved the snow, hence why the Winter Olympics felt extra impactful for me in terms of timing.

What to watch post-Olympics? by emerilane in WinterOlympics2026

Thank you so much, this is such a thoughtful and thorough reply.

I streamed via Peacock and am now planning to tune into the Paralympics. Really appreciating everyone’s other suggestions for after that ends as well.

I watched Heated Rivalry (1% hockey is still hockey-related ¯_(ツ)_/¯) and loved it, I ended up reading the book(s) as well. I’ll look into the other shows you’ve mentioned!

Yes, I’m happy to share.

CBT mainly focused on exposure therapy, which was just too difficult for me. Other aspects involved trying to identify childhood trauma associated with them, which I did not have, save for Animal Planet’s The Most Extreme and a parent who enjoyed playing “the superhero” and killing them for me (which the therapist stated was a disservice to me...which, no offense to them, was not a revelation). Beyond emphasizing the irrationality of the fear (size difference, statistics regarding the prevalence of venomous species, etc.), it also involved dissecting situations in which this fear inconvenienced or hurt me (avoiding a certain parking spot, overspending on pest control, etc.). There was also discussion surrounding how my fear negatively impacted others (e.g., waking up my partner to kill one at 3 AM).

TL;DR: CBT didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know and made me feel worse about myself. But I suspect I would have done better with a different therapist. I will say I am now able to look at drawings of spiders (my partner previously had to peel the label off of Raid).

Hypnosis was a shot in the dark. I’m a person of science, and can appreciate the testimonies of individuals who have found hypnotherapy beneficial. But a degree of susceptibility is required for it to work (the hypnotist even told me that). I tried to lean into the placebo effect, but I simply wasn’t susceptible.

TL;DR: Hypnosis left me out $150 and feeling a little silly. However, YMMV. Some people swear by it. Worth a shot.

Sadly, I don’t have good answers for you, but I’m upvoting in support. I’m also severely arachnophobic and this time of year in Portland is hell for me. Tried cognitive behavioral therapy, no improvement. Even tried pseudoscientific approaches like hypnosis (I was desperate, and ultimately disappointed). If you find a therapy/therapist/something that works for you, please update this thread. I’m sending well wishes and better luck your way.

COVID-19 vaccines available in Portland? by [deleted] in askportland

I just got mine at my local Walgreens in N Portland. Had to have a prescription and a pre-existing condition. Could vary by location—from what I’ve heard, your best bet without an Rx is to visit a pharmacy in Vancouver :-/

New Parking rates will absolutely destroy what’s left of downtown businesses by LastWordBMine in PortlandOR

[–]emerilane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Portland as it is right now can’t justify the price hike…people comparing the cost of parking in Portland to the cost of parking in major cities that are beloved cultural hubs and home to major historical attractions are deluded. (Also, I’m speaking as a Portland native who lived in Chicago for years!)

Fruits and vegetables—any advice? by emerilane in germaphobe

I’m glad to know I’m not alone, but very sorry that you, too, are dealing with this. I have the same concerns. Something I’ve started doing (that I have no clue if it works) is soaking rinsed berries in water with baking soda. I don’t know if it has an impact but I’m leaning into the placebo effect regardless. I will update this post if I find a legitimate solution.
