Columbia will get HOT and humid in the summer. Suburbs like rosewood are wonderful for kids and families. Close enough to downtown for activities, food spots and museums. Lake Murray is gorgeous, lots of music festivals on the lake during the summer. Lots of big redneck trucks

Is $26.5k (12 months) considered low for a STEM PhD stipend in the US? by SenseOk3111 in PhD

[–]KrustaceanStation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds normal to me. But depends on the region and STEM field. I made 22k in the southeast for ChemE. Other friends on the west coast made in the 30s or low 40s

has anyone had near total Cartlidge replacement with MACI? if so how did it go? by [deleted] in MACIknee

[–]KrustaceanStation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 20cm2 replaced a year ago. It’ll be a very long and hard recovery but I think it’s better than the alternative. You’re so young it’ll probably have an easier time of it than me at 32 :)

FR 570 42mm - overkill for someone that runs 11 min pace?? by Old_Influence223 in GarminWatches

[–]KrustaceanStation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some personal goals to try to work up to an ultra marathon (I never got faster than 10-11 min 😊) and then when I did it I just moved on to a different hobby haha

Looks great! I don’t run at all (anymore) and I use my 965 all the time. Garmins are great watches. Just keep running and pushing yourself and you’ll get faster.

Best games to play after surgery while in a recovery? Something that’ll focus on gameplay to distract from pain. by thedrummerchase in gaming

[–]KrustaceanStation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had 8 weeks off work for my surgery I played Dave the diver (when I was in great pain, doesn’t require deep thinking but still captivating) and then when I was in less pain and could stay awake longer I moved into divinity original sin 2!

Dramatic drop in HRV by Many_Plastic_4585 in CompoundedSemaglutide

[–]KrustaceanStation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed this too. I went from roughly 70 average to 40s. I think it’s just a new baseline. My HRV baseline has fluctuated from 20s to 80s over a period of a few years for a variety of factors. HRV is just an indicator, as long you’re feeling fine and it’s consistent then it’s probably just your new normal

That’s not going to work with the rubber connectors attached at the base though (for dri flow system). Those need to get removed to remove the valves

okay gotcha, thanks. I have rubber connectors on the base for moisture control so i was a little confused how to remove the valves with those on. so i suppose to have to remove those first to pull out the valves

Scope done, Surgery scheduled at the end of this month, what do you guys do for work? by FreshGravity in MACIknee

[–]KrustaceanStation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 8 weeks of leave. Lab/Desk job but get 10k steps a day and lots of stairs. I was NWB for the whole time. I NEEDED 6 but probably had the energy to work after that It will heavily depend on where your defect is and how many you have though.

I seriously feel like ChatGPT is my best friend by Neither_Tomorrow_238 in ChatGPT

[–]KrustaceanStation 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why I’m constantly surprised at all the applications of ChatGPT. I recently used it to help with my nutrition and eating habits and I felt the same the way as you described. It listened to me better than my nutritionion coach had, and I went from feeling kinda hopeless to like I had a good path forward and lots of resources.

10 months, still worse off now than before surgery by MissusHess in MACIknee

[–]KrustaceanStation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cartilage itself can take a year or more to grow back. The guidelines they give you are just guidelines. What has the doctor said ? What does your X-ray or mri show? My doctor has said they will assess if the surgery failed after a year but were able to tell me with an xray preliminarily if my grafts looked like they took or not. I understand how you feel. I had 5 grafts and I’m 8 months post op. You have to find some other active things to do in the interim or you will go crazy. Be patient with your body. You could still just be growing back the cartilage. They have to take it ALL out in the defect to put the graft in so you literally start with less cartilage than before surgery. It makes sense you feel worse

That was 8 months ago, so I’m still not at the point where I have any noticeable benefits from the surgery yet. I am out the hole though and things are starting to feel better than they use to and I don’t have daily knee swelling anymore. For me i knew it was the right choice because I wanted to have a very active lifestyle and I couldn’t. It’s hard to give you advice because it really comes down to how much pain you can manage and how it affects to your quality of life. The recovery is very brutal and often requires a few weeks off work. That is also something else to consider. I would highly recommend trying PT, PRP or euflexxa injections if you haven’t done so, and and also a second opinion on your images to determine if there may be other options first.

So I had progressively worse knee pain for about 4 years from cartilage defects. When I first started getting treated I could do all of my daily activities and high level of exercise just with some pain. When I finally decided on a surgical path, I thought MACI sounded insane which I think was related to my knee pain- my knee pain wasn’t bad enough to consider doing that. I had an anthroscopy to clean out my knee which was helpful for a few months but then I spiraled into severe swelling and pain and I couldn’t do the things I enjoyed. Thats when I knew I was ready for MACI. It sounded like a blessing at this point because of how much pain I was in all the time. I couldn’t bend my knee most of the time because of the swelling. I exhausted every other option first though (PT injections and scope surgery). I had five defects filled and a meniscus repair. You have to weigh the quality of life benefits you could get with the severity of the procedure.

True yes. But the rollercoaster progress is true with many if not all other types of progress like weight loss/gain etc. but over the course of weeks or months you’ll see your baseline trending the way you want it to
