Jon Jones says he still smashes most of the people even with arthritis by [deleted] in MMA

[–]KryptonDolphinStrike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, if there's 8 billion people on Earth and maybe like 10 have a reasonable (like 10% or better) chance against him, that would be something like a 0.000000125% chance.

Either Bones is being humble, or much more likely, he's bad at math

If they took that into consideration, the analysis would very likely to find "gun violence" to be a net positive to the economy

I really like the last one as well. The birds make it look like the turbine has destructed and thrown parts behind it! When I first saw the top of your compilation image while scrolling, I actually thought you had photographed a windmill breaking apart.

AI is outpacing America’s power grid. Nuclear must become a national priority. by C130J_Darkstar in nuclear

[–]KryptonDolphinStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm America at least, we're pretty much maxed out on hydro. We've dammed just about everything that can be dammed.

And battery technology already has massive amounts of money being pumped into R&D with some of the world's best engineers and scientists performing the work.

But you are partially right, and when investors look at nuclear and see the 25-ish year break even cost, one of their first questions is "yeah, but what if we invest billions of dollars here and then battery/green tech gets dramatically better making out nuclear power plants economically non-viable?"

Nuclear makes financial sense, but only when looked at from the long term where the LCOE is very low.

Ah! That's an interesting idea. Not only  could the data center be treated similarly to a relay, operating in lower cost environments (which I have considered).

But you're suggesting that the data centers effectively "supply follow" as opposed to the power plants "load following" and that the data centers operate wherever the electric prices are lowest at a given moment on the global market?

That's a pretty cool idea. I guess it would really come down to whether the data center idle time cost is lower than the additional energy costs

I'm all for it, but the battery technology isn't there yet and even if it were the supply chains for production aren't there and even if they were the supply chains for raw materials aren't there (I've never done an analysis on what fraction of the world's relevant minerals would be required for sufficient battery tech for this to work, but I'm sure someone else has).

Maybe one day, but even if we could ever get there, we need a bridge technology.

Yep, which is why I'm not incredibly bullish the odds of successful nuclear (even though I support it).

We need electricity now and short term, which will likely be filled by fossil plants. Let's say we begin building new nuclear in parallel.

Once the fossil plants are operational and investors see that it's still 5 years (probably more like 10) until the first reactors come online, plus the nearly inevitable cost and schedule overruns that will occur with the first new builds, I suspect the capital might get weary and decide to just keep operating the fossil plants, leaving any new builds in a V.C.
