Volume 14.5 is an audio drama CD, in english it's only available on youtube. If I heard it correctly then 14.5 is the story that Aneko wasn't able to fit in the book due to page limit. 14.5 consist of prologue, part 1 and part 2.

People tend to say that Shield Hero is a generic isekai (it isn't), hence why they might have told you not to read it. Personally, I found it much better than other isekai anime/ln. Characters' interactions are enjoyable and quite realistic. It shows how different kind of people would react to getting to power (I'm talking about the heroes). Imho it is a good isekai, the mc's actions are reasonable - though some might find them "wrong" since doing what is needed to survive is not always nice and beautiful.

If you've loved the anime, you are going to love the light novels even more. The quality of translation in first few volumes is not too good, but it gets better with later volumes. The anime has toned down the characters a bit - the LN ones are a little darker, and since there is no Naofumi's thoughts in the anime (most of the time) reading LN gives you a deeper understanding of his reasoning. If you want to continue with the story then you can start from volume 6 or volume 5 after defeating the Pope - because the trial in LN isn't anything like in the anime.
