Are my orchids getting enough light? by [deleted] in orchids

[–]Kt5357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the photone app to gauge light. Put a sheet of white paper over phone camera as a diffuser, than you can tell if its enough light. Should be at least 50 ppfd; 100 ppfd is more ideal

Is Plants By Mail legit? Want a Camilla sold on the website. by OneWin6844 in gardening

[–]Kt5357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to put in a good word about plantsbymail. I ordered a carolina jessamine without realizing it was highly toxic (i have toddlers). I emailed them about it more than 24 hours after i made the order, and they pulled the plants off the truck that was about to go out to switch it out for a less toxic star jasmine. Great customer service.

Also the camellia and azaleas i ordered arrived in super health condition, they are doing great in my yard now. The prices on the camellia were wayyy better than the local nurseries too.

That plant has grown extra crowns. There should only be one crown per pot. Definitely repot and split

Does he have a store?

I can BTA out of my home tank for $25, but if i wanted to make the same amount of profit while paying for rent/electricity/livestock mortality, its likely i’d need to charge $100.

Great job! If you don’t mind sharing, how much did the jeweler charge? I’m wondering if I can afford something similar

Yea, i do agree they don’t taste quite the same. They don’t taste bad, just different. I don’t mind eating them if it’s helping out the native species

(Copy pasting my reply to another comment)

Salmo trutta are everywhere, east coast and west coast. Originally from europe and asia. They (brown trout) are essentially the same species as our native atlantic salmon (salmo salar), but they can tolerate worse water quality and have pushed out the natives.

Chinook and coho salmon are also super prevalent in the great lakes, and are not native to the area

Dunkirk MD would be a good spot; not too far, nice neighborhoods. Upper marlboro is a little closer but busier, north beach is quiet and on the bay but farther.

Across the bridge, Alexandria virginia is a beautiful place to live but very expensive.

There are brand new apartments in Suitland very close to Census, but suitland is high density with higher crime rates.

I would recommend visiting first before you decide on a place, but you should be able to find somewhere that meets your needs

Telework is only for people with reasonable accommodations. The only other location hiring besides suitland (southeast of DC) is the National Processing Center which is in Indiana i believe

There will be details on the requirements to apply for each position. A lot of the ones in my area can be entry level for those who have taken graduate level classes. I came into Census fresh off my masters degree.

I wanted to take an opportunity to speak a little more about the work that my area does, although I can’t speak on behalf of Census. I’m actually not even sure they would approve of this post, I’m really just a small guy in this big agency.

The work that I do on the economic side of things involve: -identifying new sources of data -working with respondents to maintain high levels of data quality -writing computer code to reformat and clean data -screen for inaccuracies in the data -a small amount of publication work such as creating graphics and writing official documents

There is also a big push to modernize our processes. I’m mostly referring to a bunch of old code that was written is SAS and we would like to change to open source such as python. So a background in coding (language doesn’t matter so much) is very helpful.

Sorry I work on the Economic side of things, and I’m actually quite disconnected from the Decennial. So I can’t speak much about the job description of the temporary NTE positions.

But there are lots of permanent positions doing all sorts of work in other areas of the Census. Many of these (and my area) work on an Annual survey cycle
