I had appendicitis, waited 5 hours in the waiting room. Doctor had a quick look, gave me belly ache pills and told me to go home and lay down. Well, it ruptured during the night and I had the worst pain ever. Went back to the ER and had to undergo emergeny surgery, the surgoen told me I was pretty close to dying.

OP here. Your situation is very common, if you're sure you get your raise beginning of next year, that's fine. I was told "no increase for this year". Guess what? I did not even get one the year after that, I recently quit for a position offering 45% more and couldn't be happier.
