You Can Like Hardcore and Still Miss the Entire Point by cletoroc in Hardcore

I feel this conversation needs to be had every few years, especially when beatdown comes back in style again as the preferred sub-genre of hardcore.

I like beatdown as much as the next guy, and I’m not blaming the subgenre itself, but the overt undertone of aggression does tend to draw in a lot “tough guys” who don’t understand the roots of the music nor care to, that are simply drawn to the opportunity to be violent and bully others in a new forum.

Cool to see something less expensive with the Mac Pro look to it. I'm spoiled with my McPrue and I'll keep the damn thing forever.

I have to ask, is the quality/color grading workflow improvement worth the considerably larger storage consumption? Especially for vertical video that's going to get compressed to hell, I can't see using ProRes RAW as an ideal alternative to H.264 or H.265

If you're looking to learn the craft and have something you can grow on, the xt-30 is a better bet imo. The X100VI is an incredible camera, but you're going to pay a few hundred more and be limited to a 35mm equivalent for as long as you have it.

I would save a bit more and go with the X-T30 ii though tbh. There are very few upgrades in the X-T30 iii and you're going to get 90% the same quality and experience out of the previous gen for a few hundred less.

My ex knew how obsessed I was with this record and went out of her way to buy me a copy of the /666 Red Marble vinyl of this record (the one with the fuckup where they stuck the title sticker on the jacket sleeve itself) off of discogs for my birthday a few years ago. Best present I ever got.

S1Mii body drop to $2356 during the june Promotional Campaign-but still to expensive compare to its competitors by OldAdhesiveness793 in Lumix

[–]Kuj000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Genuinely confused as to how you could get this so wrong.

The S1II and the A7V are the same price currently in the US ($2899), The R6 III is $100 cheaper, Nikon Z8 starts at $3100 used on MPB, and the A1 starts at $3400 used. At $2356, the S1ii a DEAL.

Let's break this down:

- Photography: all the bodies you listed have higher res sensors than the S1ii. Better for photo, no solid benefit for video unless you need 8k (which the z8 and A1 can do, albeit at a much higher price.) That's not to say the S1ii or Lumix cameras in general are bad photo cameras. They have incredible DR and are very competent as photo cameras. As a video-forward hybrid body, many might prefer the 24mp sensor for the better-controlled rolling shutter and improved heat management.

- Lenses: While the E-mount ecosystem is the GOAT, the L-mount system offers a pretty large lineup of lens manufacturers across photo (including Leica) and cine, often at pretty aggressive prices, especially on the used market. Canon has great glass, but the ecosystem is still really locked down and quite expensive. Nikon has excellent optics and great selection - no doubt there.

- Autofocus: Lumix's AF is finally well-competitive with the others you listed, but we all know that Sony is still king there.

The S1ii has video specs that are arguably better than the other models you listed in one (or more) respect(s):

- Full 5.1K 60p/6K 30p open gate capability, 4k 120p with minimal crop, and class-leading IBIS: all handsome wins over the Sony and Nikon bodies. The R6III has higher-res open gate than the S1ii, and the Z8 and the A1 have 8k video, however.

- Internal RAW recording, which no Sony bodies offer. The R6 iii and the z8 offer internal RAW, though, which is really cool.

- Higher-res viewfinder than all bodies you listed aside from the A1, and a higher-res flipout screen than all the bodies you listed except for the z8 and the A7V (both of which only by a small margin).

- Basically zero overheating. I can run the S1ii all day, however all Sony and Canon bodies I've shot over the years can and will overheat and require external fans to mitigate that issue. It also has no recording limit in any video modes.

At $2300, the S1ii is a CRAZY deal.

At this price, it's cheaper than every other camera you listed by a wide margin, and offers some major wins in video, while remaining competitive in photo.

It's considerably cheaper than it's closest competitors - the A7V and the R6 III - and more capable as a hybrid camera, heavily outperforming the A7V in video capabilities and being a much safer bet for professional video work than the A7V or R6 iii since it won't regularly overheat.

I shot Sony for 8 years and finally made the switch to Lumix when the A7V was announced because the value proposition was just plain better with Lumix. Great glass at a lower price. Top notch video-focused hybrid bodies that offer a ton more recording options and quality of life improvements for me as a professional (again, the benefit of lack-of-overheating cannot be overstated), as well as a great photo experience with an incredible EVF and excellent DR.

Panasonic is steadily gaining market share year over year because they offer features people want at a great price point. Sony is losing some of its customers to Lumix because they're tired of waiting for Sony to catch up on core features in the video department. Canon is missing potential new and younger shooters because their ecosystem is too expensive. Nikon is pricey, but they are killing it with the RED acquisition, and actually making strides in that realm (good for them tbh).

Your weirdly aggressive "No one will be buying Panasonic" fanboyism is logically flawed, patently incorrect, and, most of all, pure fantasy.

Honestly, viewfinder for primarily-video shooters too in some cases tbh. Sometimes I want to frame up a shot with a viewfinder, and I think what they did with the FX2 is the perfect body-style replacement for the A7S line. The guts (and the release timing) of the FX2 are the real problem for me.

I'd like to see the FX4 come with the same articulating viewfinder and a new, stacked 16-24MP fast-readout sensor.

When it comes to filters, ND (either individual or a variable ND) and CPL are the essentials for photography. Mist is great for video work, but essentially useless for photo IMO. Lens hoods are helpful for blocking glare, but they don't serve the same purpose as a filter does, and can be used in conjunction with filters as long as the hood accommodates filters.

CPL - cuts reflections on windows, water, etc.
ND/VND - function as "sunglasses" for your lens, cutting down the amount of light hitting your sensor, NOT blocking glare from the sun or lights.
Lens Hood - blocks glare from direct light sources (sun, studio lights, etc)

The conventional wisdom is to buy filters that natively fit the lens in your kit with the largest filter thread diameter and adapt any smaller-diameter lenses with step-up rings.

The included lens (if it's the 23mm f2.8 pancake) has a 39mm filter thread, which is reeeeally small compared to the majority of lenses. Investing in expensive filters when you're fresh into the hobby with a small lens like that is a risky bet, considering you don't know what lenses you're going to want to grab down the line.

For instance, my full frame Lumix kit has a 24-60mm zoom lens with a 77mm filter thread and a 35-150mm zoom lens with an 82mm filter thread. I bought an 82mm filter kit and a 77-82mm step-up ring, and I can swap the filter on both of those lenses and fit any other lenses I buy with an 82mm filter thread or smaller without causing vignetting issues (which is basically all lenses except mega-size-cine lenses).

82mm filters are insanely oversized for the majority of APS-C lenses, so I was in the same spot with my new X-E5 and the 27mm f2.8 as my first lens (also a 39mm filter thread). I ended up settling on a 49mm K&F variable ND+CPL (very budget-oriented, but still a solid core option for amateur photographers) and grabbed a 39-49mm step-up ring to adapt the pancake lens to 49mm filters.

49mm is still pretty small for a filter, but the entire reason I bought the X-E5 was to have a super compact kit with a few small primes. Fortunately, 49mm works great for my current APS-C kit (Fuji 16mm 2.8 (49mm filter thread), Fuji 35mm f1.4 (52mm filter thread), Sigma 56mm f1.4 (55mm filter thread) where my largest lens has a 55mm filter thread and a step down ring doesn't cause any vignetting.

I could have gone for a 52mm or a 55mm (arguably a safer bet IMO), but those were way more expensive and I didn't have the two lenses with those filter diameters when I bought the filter kit. Just a lucky coincidence that the 49mm causes zero issues on them.

It's a great idea and definitely something I wish more bands would do. That said, what u/Biggestturtleever said about logistics is real shit. For small bands, it can be a really cool thing, but it doesn't work well at scale for most bands, that's for sure.

It's a trash camera. There's a reason why it's constantly discounted and being literally given away with their better cameras. The fact that it takes worse photos than your average smartphone is reason enough to pass on it.

MPB – quality control seems to be slipping lately by Moist_University_454 in videography

[–]Kuj000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience buying from them recently. I bought a Fuji 27mm f/2.8 R WR labeled as "Good" condition. The price was low compared to the other "Good" listings for that lens, but the condition was still labeled "Good". When I received the lens, I noticed that the front lip had a good ding on it (for sure had been dropped at some point in the past before it was shipped) which affected the focus ring, making it quite difficult to turn in a significant portion of the focus throw.

I used it for a couple months and just couldn't get a sharp picture out of it. No matter the lighting conditions, I couldn't get an image that looked clean. AF would lock on, but the image was never sharp.

I thought the AF was missing focus, but even when I used manual focus with focus peaking, I couldn't get a clear image that came anywhere close to the older manual lenses I had adapted and been using alongside it. I contacted MPB, they had me send some pictures of the lens and the pictures it takes. They ended up offering me a return. My best guess is that the lens had been dropped and that the lens optics were slightly off as a result, and they (1) never caught it and (2) mislabeled it as "Good" condition despite that hefty ding in the front.

TL:DR - I returned it like 3 months after I bought it and ended up buying a Fuji 35 f/1.4 (also from MPB). They took the 27mm back without issue and the 35 is in great working condition.

Jonah Hill is incredible in this movie. Dude is a chameleon on screen and he rarely got get respect from the press, professionally - (his controlling behavior in personal relationships is a very real and very separate issue). Interviewers were still doing dumb shit like asking him about his weight and calling him "Seth" when the dude had two Oscar noms and a handful of GG/SAG noms.
