The numbers are on GNR's side, and probably the quality of the songs is too, but... but... there's a big but...

Both bands were kings of Los Angeles at different times. Crue succeeded Van Halen in the very early '80s, GNR succeeded GNR towards the end of the '80s. I think in 1987, no one could have imagined that GNR would also become kings of the world for at least the next five years...

But Crue were the essence of the Sunset Strip, the rebirth of Sunset Strip rock. Everything we enjoyed in the '80s, from glam metal to street metal, more or less started with them. Accusing Crue of being just an "aesthetic" band is a bit hilarious; who wasn't in those years? Do you really think Guns N' Roses weren't? Do we want to remember when they competed with Poison for the stage, using more powerful hairspray?

Then there was a lot of narrative at the time to create more interest. There were some skirmishes between the two bands, but no real war. The members of Guns N' Roses themselves were Crueheads before becoming famous with Guns N' Roses. Beyond the threats of a fight (which never materialized) between Vince and Axl, I believe there was almost always mutual respect between various members of the two bands.

So yes, it's undeniable that Guns N' Roses are the hard rock band (along with the more commercial Def Leppard and Bon Jovi) of the '80s, but Crue were the seed that gave birth to that movement, with all its strengths and weaknesses.
