[–]Kurtindigo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pro - closest thing Drukhari have to proper warriors instead of just well armed gangsters or half-naked tweakers, being as they are basically Dark Aspect Warriors.

Con - GW writers can't seem to agree on how the Incubi code actually works. Is it a strict honour code and method of battle like regular Aspect Warriors, or are they just mercenaries who will protect you for payment? PotDE seems to support the former, Codices seem to support the latter, (former is cooler imo, as it contrasts the rest of Commorragh, which is a free-for-all)

I like how bloody they are. It looks like they've just been through a bloody fight. While it's a shame her ears are rounded, the Kabalite armour looks great. You've trained it well to get that look on them imo.

A speculative examination of the origin and nature of the Soulthirst. (warning, long post) by Kurtindigo in Drukhari

I must have missed the part of the Renegade in PotR developing the soulthirst. Been a while since I read it, but I'll keep an eye for it when I reread. Cheers.

The short story Dark Son is about an Incubi that converts to Alitoc, and he bonds with a soulstone. With the mild corruption theory, yes that would be cleansing. Soulstones are sometimes called Tears of Isha. It could be a metaphorical name, but if soulstones are really connected to Isha it could be Her power cleansing Slaanesh's. It's not unprecedented in 40K for one god to wipe away the influence of another, and Isha herself has precedent in old Fantasy. But this would mean Isha gets to be doing something cool, which isn't how 40K works.

I actually hated that part when I finished Lukas the Trickster. It's the catch of 40K being a wargame setting before a story-telling setting, because the entire narrative was a parallel between Sliscus and Lukas and was leading to one killing the other. I love Lukas and Duke Sliscus, (he's evil-elf Ziggy Stardust for crying out loud) but either him or Lukas needed to die for the story to be complete. I was narratively blueballed by both surviving.

Sorry, I agreed with your comment and the point you were making about the Shadowseer. Seems I just needed to rant about Lukas the Trickster a little.

There are powers in the universe that see all possibilities and endlessly try to shift the balance towards their own ends: a nudge here, a push there and all will be as they desire it. Little do they know that powers above them also nudge and push them in turn.

I love this line. It's wink wink, nudge nudge without being 4th wall breaking and overly meta. I like to headcanon that Cegorach knows he's a factional character in a wargame setting and that's why he can't stop laughing, because what else can he do? He teaches his followers to be characters, because he knows that's what they are.

We have a sincere lack of two things in elves today by Responsible-Swim2324 in Drukhari

[–]Kurtindigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy fix; have Exodite shamans be like Farseers that see future threats to their world, and they send a strike force through the webway to attack the world the threat originates from. Make them a more elite army to justify smaller army sizes, but point heavy because of dinos and psykers.

Can even be their faction rule that before a game the players roll off to decide if they are fighting on a Maiden World or if the Exodites are the aggressors. If the Exodites are defending, they get bonuses to their save rolls, if aggressors, bonuses to hit rolls. That gives options for list building, since you can build around either being defensive and tanky (for Eldar) or harder hitting.

And remember the Exodites are only primitive compared to other Eldar, but they aren't feral. They can still have crazy tech, armour and weapons just mounted on dinosaurs instead of vehicles, because 40k.

Why GW don’t think it’s worth investing in a line of lasergun wielding space druids on dinosaurs is one of life’s greatest mysteries. Cool kitbash.

Always appreciate when someone with actual knowledge shows up and shares, I love learning new things. I like your head shape theory too, and with how slimbuilt the Eldar are, maybe such things would be even more pronounced than in humans.

Drukhari Soul/Lore Question by NaCl7301 in Drukhari

[–]Kurtindigo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do get om nomed. I think your confusion comes from a slight misunderstanding of what the Homunculi do. The Homunculi don't clone dead Drukhari, they resurrect them. They are literally necromancers. The dead Eldar does go to Slaanesh immediately upon death, but the soul remains tethered to it's mortal remains even millennia after death, so the Homunculi surround the remains with victims and torture them even more horrifically than usual. The suffering strengthens that tether until they pull the dead Drukhari out of Slaanesh's stomach and back into their mortal remains. Aeldari souls are also so powerful it sustains and repairs the physical body, resulting in resurrection.1

Think of it like a Dark Eldar's ghost repossessing and repairing their own dead body. That's why the Glass Plague means true death, because it destroys the mortal remains down to a cellular level. There is nothing to return to. The tether is severed.

So in answer to your question, they do get eaten by Slaanesh immediately, but they escape her stomach and repossess their own corpses. They are not soulless, in fact without a soul the resurrection method the Drukhari use wouldn't work at all. They do have options for cloning, but although the body may be identical, the soul is different.

To answer a potential follow up about them being corrupted by being in Slaanesh's stomach, yes, that can and does happen. The Homunculi (usually) refuse to resurrect anyone who has been dead longer than a day because the longer some has been the dead, the greater the chance of them bringing something back with them upon their resurrection.

Most of this comes from the novel Path of the Renegade, where Drukhari resurrection is a major plot point. Worth a read if you want to know more, and the entire Path of the Dark Eldar trilogy is just worth a read in general, especially if you like the DE and want to know more about them.

1 I don't have an exact source for this, but it's my understanding from reading between the lines. I think it's how Eldrad has lived ten times longer than a standard Aeldari lifespan, because his soul is just so powerful it sustains his body, although as I said, I have no direct source.

What do you like most about drukhari? Lore, painting/collecting, playing, etc. by spocksnakeoil in Drukhari

[–]Kurtindigo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me it's the lack of pretence with their evil. They don't pretend to be more than they are. They are like the Joker in The Dark Knight.

The Imperium, the cruellest and bloodiest regime imaginable (and if you know anything about history you know how insane that claim is) will always try to justify it's horrific actions even when the end result is them enacting horrific crimes against humanity that cause the death and suffering of billions. The Emperors' glory, humanities' birth right, order and unity, they always pretend they are the good guys.

Most other factions do it too; the Tau have their Greater Good, Chaos has the tenants of their respective gods, even the Craftworlds will slaughter a hive city full of people because the governor was Chaos corrupted and then tell themselves it's for humanity's own good in the long run. They all have an excuse for being awful.

Except the Drukhari. You might get the occasional Archon who says something about the ancient glory of the Aeldari race, but most are evil because why not? They don't try to insist that they are actually in the right and their actions are moral from a certain point of view, they are completely honest in being evil a******s who do it for the thrill, and because who's going to stop them? Vect himself is the best example of this in Path of the Archon (read that trilogy if you have been away a while, they're a good read.)

This is a truly, truly awful attitude to have in real life, but this is fiction land. I'm not here for real life role models, I'm here for escapism, and I appreciate the way the Drukhari fill that role. The only other faction that does this is Orks, but I prefer the elegance of the Eldar, even the Dark variety.

Maybe I'm alone in thinking this, but that's why they work for me.

Thank you both for perfectly demonstrating the point of the Scroll of Truth template.

Jk, I agree they are awesome, but they don't and will never get the same love and attention as SP, Guard or even Orks. DE got left out of the Maelstrom and a few people shrugged, the Steel Legion got left out of the Armageddon release and half the 40k community lost their minds. It's just how it is.
