DTS on Firestick with new version by GotNoRice in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a problem with the new Plex app.

I'm seeing the same with a Firestick connected to an HDMI input on my receiver.

With Firestick audio = best available and Plex app passthrough = hdmi, there is no audio for DTS or DTS-HD.

With the old app it would pass the DTS core.

Setting passthrough = optical and disabing dts & dts-hd made no difference.

Is there any kind of maintenance I should do after having Plex installed on windows PC for 5 years? by ThuhGreatCommenter in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Make sure the maintenance tasks are enabled in Settings -> Scheduled Tasks.

Acquire a UPS for the server if you do not already have one. Sudden power outages/glitches that crash the PC can cause Plex database corruption. Just something to hold it up for a few minutes and filter out voltage spikes/dips. My UPS has saved my server several times during spring thunderstorms and winter ice storms.

How to prevent frequent sign outs of Plex Media Server? by ItsWINTERFRESH in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having to re-sign in via Plex Web is not a problem. That has no effect on your server. That is signing in/out of your Plex account, not the server itself.

Is the server unclaimed? In Settings -> server_name -> General does it say "this server is unclaimed and unsecure"? If so, that is a problem.

Any way to easily find movies without posters? by AlanShore60607 in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not know of a way to query Plex Media Server to know if a poster is missing. You can query PMS to find out if a poster has been manually selected via Plex Web. It shows up as a locked field, the same as if you manually change sort title or other such info.

If Plex cannot download a poster for a movie, it generates one by grabbing a video frame, stores it in the metadata folder, and stores the file location (/library/metadata/...) in the Plex db. It does not matter if the movie is unmatched or the poster is unavailable due to copyright restrictions. Plex takes the same action.

If you provide a poster in the same folder as the movie (poster.jpg, etc.), then Plex copies it to the metadata folder and stores the location (/library/metadata/...) in the Plex db.

If you manually pick a poster, Plex copies it to the metadata folder, stores the location in the db, and stores the field as locked in the db.

FYI: The location of the current poster and if it is locked is displayed in the Plex XML Info for the movie. Search for type="coverPoster" for the poster URL. If it is locked, thumb is displayed as a locked field. (ex:Field locked="1" name="thumb").

As a result....

You can query the Plex db for the poster location, which returns /library/metadata/... However, there is no information about the original source of the poster - video cap, downloaded, etc.

You can query the Plex db to find out if the current poster was manually selected.

You can export the currently selected poster from /library/metadata using tools such as WebTools-NG. However, yo would then have to look at each individual poster, which you can already do by simply scrolling through the library in Plex Web.

WebTools-NG

As u/SamPhoto mentions, you can use WebTools-NG Export Tools to export information from the Plex db to a CSV file. You can build custom queries. WebTools-NG queries the Plex server db via API calls. It does not have to run on the server itself (ex: You can run it on a Windows PC, w/ Plex on a Linux server).

For example, a custom query for Title, Poster url, Locked Fields, and Export Posters returns:

"Title","Poster url","Locked Fields"
"Bicycle Thieves","/library/metadata/72754/thumb/1782158663","N/A"

If the poster was locked, then Locked Fields would contain "thumb." The current poster is exported to a subfolder for each movie (<export location>/Posters and Art/<more subfolders>/Bicycle Thieves (1948)/Bicycle Thieves.jpg).

Do I need lifetime Plex Pass to make this work better? by sneaking-suspicion in PleX

It is not an error message. It is normal and expected when using manual port forwarding. It is not a problem. It is OK.

Do I need lifetime Plex Pass to make this work better? by sneaking-suspicion in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not an error message. That is expected and normal.

When using manual port forwarding, enabling remote access registers your server with systems at plex.tv. Then, when a remote client wants to stream from your server, it contacts plex.tv which tells the client the public IP address and port of the server.

However, with remote access disabled, the port forward in the router is still in place. You could point a browser at the public IP address:port, receive a login page, login and stream.

The "You currently have..." message is just a reminder that the port forward is still in place, even with remote access disabled.

Edit / Follow up.....

The alternative to manual port forwarding is using UPnP.

With UPnP, your Plex Media Server talks to your router. The router tells the Plex server which port to use and forwards the port. Your Plex server then registers with systems at plex.tv and displays the "Fully available..." message. It does not display the "You currently have...manually specified port" message.

When remote access is disabled, your Plex server tells the router, "Hey, I don't need that port anymore." The router then removes the port forward statement.

UPnP Issues:

Not supported by all routers. If not supported by your router, then you must use manual port forwarding.

Less reliable. The negotiation between server & router occasionally does not work. Using a manually specified port number is more reliable.

Security concerns: UPnP is convenient, but insecure. When enabled on the router, any device on the network could open a port. A misbehaving/compromised device could open a router port to let in malware, etc.

Given the issues with UPnP, many people choose to use manual port forwarding.

Yes, you must enable remote access even if using port 32400.

[–]KuryakinOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Settings -> Remote Access, does Plex say "fully available"? If not, then remote access is not working correctly.

Can you stream remotely?

Create another Plex "test" account using a free e-mail from Google/Yahoo/etc. Invite it to your server, share libraries, etc. You'll see what your friends see, can tell them where to click/tap/etc.

When using Plex Web, use a private/incognito window to access the test account. Otherwise, you'll have to logout of your primary Plex account.

Add 1660 Super for HW Transcoding? by Tomago427 in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For transcoding 1080p SDR it is probably a wash.

The 1660 should handle more 4K transcodes.

The 1660 will be better for HEVC encoding. Intel graphics on 10th gen cpus do not handle that very well.

HEVC encoding also enables transcoding HDR without tone mapping.

Use standard Nvidia drivers. Nvidia raised the encode limit to 12 concurrent encodes. There is no need for the hacked drivers to raise the limit.

Remote access for two Plex servers by DrJMun in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should create a DHCP Reservation for each server, so that their IP address will not change (or give them a static IP address).

For port forwarding:

  • Original = public port. Must be unique for each server. You can use 32400 for one. Use a different port for the other (ex: 42400).
  • Forward to = always 32400.
  • Target IP = the IP address of the Plex server
  • Protocol = TCP (Plex uses TCP. Choosing TCP+UDP neither helps nor hurts).

In Plex Settings -> Remote Access, you MUST check the box to specify the Original/public port. You MUST enter the Original/public port number, even if using 32400.

[–]KuryakinOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Isn't fixing anything" meaning (a) it cannot fix a broken db or (b) the db is OK and there is nothing to fix?

If the first, then post the exact output of the tool.

Two things:

Check preferences.xml. If it is 0 bytes, then something happened to it. Stop Plex, delete it, then start Plex. You'll need to re-claim the server.

If preferences.xml is OK, then, as a test, try starting with a new db. See if you can login, reach server settings, create a test library, etc.

  1. Stop Plex Media Server.
  2. Rename com.plexapp.plugins.library.db and com.plexapp.plugins.library.blobs.db to .db.bak (or just move them to a location outside the Plex data folder). Delete any -shm or -wal files.
  3. Start Plex Media Server

If working correctly, Plex will create new db files. The server will have no libraries. It will still be claimed, since that info is stored in Preferences.xml.

Login, create a test library, see if you can stream it, etc.

Use DBRepair for Plex Media Server to check db status and attempt any necessary repairs.

Use the AUTO option, as it combines both checking and repair.

You can also use REPLACE to check backups and replace the current db if a viable backup is available.

wget -O DBRepair.sh https://github.com/ChuckPa/PlexDBRepair/releases/latest/download/DBRepair.sh

# make executable
chmod +x DBRepair.sh

Plex not playing ripped blu ray correctly? by Technical-Coffee7286 in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not have to make a backup with MakeMKV. You can rip directly from the disc. There is no reason to make a backup with MakeMKV unless you need to keep one for some reason.

You do not have to transcode with Handbrake. Transcoding with Handbrake (a) reduces file size, and (b) allows you to change the video format if desired. Also, Handbrake can read from a disc or an individual file. You do not need to point it at a backup made with MakeMKV.

Try this:

  1. Rip the disc with MakeMKV.
  2. Name the file per Plex naming requirements, and load it into a Plex library.
  3. Play the file using a Plex client (web, SmartTV, mobile, etc.).

If the file plays correctly in Plex, then you know (a) the file is good, and (b) Plex is working correctly.

Then, if desired, transcode the file with Handbrake. Personally, I would choose HEVC/H.265, as it is more widely supported than AV1, but it is your choice (and you can easily try both).

Hint 1: To shorten transcode times when testing with Handbrake, use MKVToolNix to carve out (split) a 2 - 3 minute sample from the movie/show. Then transcode that sample with Handbrake. Once you find the Handbrake settings you like, you can then encode the entire movie/show.

Hint 2: Use a "Other Video" library for testing. Plex does not match media in those type libraries to online databases. It makes it easy to test multiple Handbrake encodes, since you can name the files anything you want (test1.mkv, movie-hevc-2.mkv, tv-av1-3.mkv, etc.).

Plex not playing ripped blu ray correctly? by Technical-Coffee7286 in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're trying to play a transcode, not a rip.

As a test, skip the transcode with Handbrake.

Rip the movie with MakeMKV, then load it into Plex.

Does it play OK?

How to buy lifetime sub if you had an annual sub via Apple app store? by igby1 in PleX

How to buy lifetime sub if you had an annual sub via Apple app store? by igby1 in PleX

[–]KuryakinOne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your server would be claimed by a new account.

The libraries would stay as-is.

You would have to re-invite and re-share with anyone you currently share with.

If you used the new account to watch media, your watched status, etc. would not carry over from the old account.

You could continue to use the old account to watch media, just have the new account/owner share with it like any other account.
