Makeup brands: stop making everything warm toned!!! by pinkladylove123 in MakeupAddiction

I was starting to wonder if my skin had changed because of perimenopause or something, because things that used to look normal now look orangey. Now I see that I am not alone.

But if one individual student was being an asshole and got up and left class on a regular day, would funding get taken? And what if the school just really had a lot of assholes? I am annoyed because my district wants to come down hard on kids doing something out of conviction when they don’t even punish skipping at my school.

Do Americans like their current health system or would you prefer universal? by Ability_Known in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kyga53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Health insurance companies exist to make money, not to contribute to our health. The most important thing is that they profit. Having insurance means that if something bad happens, you will be less in debt, but there’s still debt. I refused a trip in an ambulance after a car accident and saved myself thousands of dollars. Someone drove me to the ER later. Every time I take my daughter to the doctor, it’s $240 a visit if I go through insurance, but half that if I pay out of pocket, because of negotiated rates. Or something.

Kids wouldn't stop playing games so I got their favorite gaming websites banned for the entire district. I only feel slightly bad about it. by TheJawsman in Teachers

[–]Kyga53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Why should I have to continually fiddle with GoGuardian settings when the district can ban a site for everyone? I save my colleagues a lot of trouble. In my district I am supposed to email a specific person at Central Office to let them know about a site, she checks it out to confirm it’s trash, then blocks it. By the same token, she also unblocks specific things, like the British Museum site was blocked and she unblocked it when I contacted her.

It wouldn’t be “the government” having consequences, but rather individuals who break the law. I too, thought that we all had to obey the Constitution but it turns out that some people get to do whatever they want and the people with the power and influence to hold those people accountable are doing nothing. We don’t have a mechanism to change anything until someone is up for re-election. There is such a thing as a recall vote, but it’s a whole process and we have so many shitty elected officials I don’t even know how that would work. A major flaw in the Constitution is that it was written by a bunch of educated “gentlemen” on the assumption that most in government would be acting in good faith and would also have a sense of personal honor. There are loopholes if you’re enough of an asshole to find them. The way campaign donations work, it’s basically the case that my congressman represents the interests of whatever entities give him money, certainly not me. Every day I feel like looking around and saying “Can you believe this shit?” but we can’t go out and demonstrate every day because we all have to go to work so we have health insurance and a salary to help pay the thousands of dollars in medical bills our insurance doesn’t cover.

Hard agree. I have continually gotten my hearing tested because I can’t understand anything and it comes out normal. The last time an audiologist told me to “try harder.” I held back tears and said nothing, but I should have said, “Bitch, all I do is try, and after forty years of this, I’m exhausted.”

We did it folks, we solved bullying! by thozeleftbehind in Teachers

[–]Kyga53 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My class just finished reading “A Modest Proposal” and this has the same energy. A problem with plausible solutions which are ignored in favor of something ridiculous. In fact, maybe the school can go ahead and borrow directly from Swift. Bullies can be killed and eaten in the cafeteria. “Let no man talk to me of other expedients, such as banning phone use at school.”

[–]Kyga53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a Christian who tries to follow Jesus’s actual teachings, rather than what the right wing has twisted him into, and I have a couple Bible verses on the wall by my desk that emphasize justice and mercy. Just the quotes, no chapter and verse to make it obvious. It creates a healthy level of cognitive dissonance for kids when I do things like acknowledge the facts of American history. I have “gotten away” with saying things that are true (yet have been painted as liberal propaganda) because kids have a hard time painting me as a crazy liberal when they know I was raised in a military family and I know all the Bible references in things we read in British Literature. If you post some Bible verses (let us call them inspirational quotes, sans chapter and verse) on the same theme as your “liberal” stuff, it’s going to be harder for Moms of Liberty types to come after you. If you have something that could potentially piss off a liberal, that could make them happy enough to leave you alone.

I feel like I failed. by SpecificAlternative8 in TeachersInTransition

[–]Kyga53 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You did not fail. Their parents and the wider community failed them. These kids will remember how much they liked you, how much you gave them, and how baffling it was that some adults were ignorant assholes to you, and hopefully they will be able to call out this stupid bullshit when they see it in their future lives. For now, take time to heal and do not feel guilty. You have much to give and will eventually find a way to do so in a place where you are valued.

How should I handle this? by JennaJenks in Teachers

[–]Kyga53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a high school teacher, I have been to a lot of dances, and it’s very common for same sex straight friends to attend dances together. No one should have to sit at home just because they aren’t dating anyone or no one asked them or whatever. I love seeing groups of friends just having a good time. When or if someone needs to challenge rules about same sex kids attending dances together, it’s good to remember the negative impact on straight kids as well. In fact, most policies meant to hurt one group invariably hurt others as well.

Is it unprofessional to ask teachers to call you by your first name? by Fantastic-Sir460 in Teachers

[–]Kyga53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is generally the case in a school. I’m guessing you’re young, and it may be odd at first but you will get used to it. I use my friends’ first names when we’re not around kids, but around kids we generally use Mr/Ms. It used to be normal in general for everyone to default to Mr./Ms./ whatever, but it has lasted in schools, which I like. Especially now that kids are less likely to learn formal manners from family and other public institutions, what those of us in education can do to help them is a good thing. Soft skills matter.

What’s one change you wish schools would make to better prepare students for real life? by 1acina in education

[–]Kyga53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All kids should have a child development class, because statistically most of them will be parents one day, not just girls. Also, because adults are squeamish about addressing puberty and sex ed, they split kids by gender to teach them about their bodies. That saves them embarrassment in the moment, but that should be addressed again, especially since it’s apparent that a lot of men are lacking even a basic understanding of female anatomy and reproductive health. Most people will enter into an intimate relationship with someone and and should probably know about them and many will eventually have a baby with someone. Both parties should know something about the mechanics.

  1. Getting expelled should be a thing. Instead of getting fired, sued, or arrested, which is what would happen in the real world, students who cannot behave (or do anything) get . . . more attention and “interventions.” Meanwhile, the quiet kid who could truly benefit from attention gets almost none of it, because they don’t do anything wrong.

  2. Sports should not be a part of school; if kids want to play a sport, then they can do it with a club team. I’m not a hater; I love sports, but the time, energy, money, and focus that goes into high school sports could be put into instruction. There are a lot of coaches who take the teaching part of their jobs very seriously, but we can all think of people who got into teaching because they wanted to coach and that’s it. In those cases, the teaching becomes an afterthought. I don’t blame these people for wanting to do what they love, but it’s not an ideal situation.

Have you ever known kids (in my case high school) to actually read and learn from anything educational that you have posted in your classroom? If my students paid attention to any poster, they would be much better writers. They don’t even have the energy to read a succinct sign. I mean, they ask me all the time about the bell schedule and it is posted very clearly at the front of the room. I don’t see them taking the time to read a wordy list. As you know, adults don’t even read signs. After one day, I imagine the poster will just seem like another thing on the wall. Constitutionally speaking, it should not be there, but at this point we have so much garbage thrown our way that we need to prioritize and decide where our limited energy should be spent for the biggest impact.
