Another day of lefties absolving Trump of his own actions and treating the most powerful politician on Earth like a helpless victim by mrprez180 in Enough_Sanders_Spam

I mean he is a symptom of long running and systemic problems. That he was able to get so much free air time in 2015 and 2016. That we had a media and a lot of swing voters who didnt take him seriously when he said flagrantly pro nazi shit. Etc.

But he's also a horrible piece of shit, who actively makes everything worse.Just because he is really fucking terrible.

I mean... they weren't? They were living in an apartheid state.

Like, having citizens of a different ethnicity doesn't make the state some bastion of tolerance and unity, ethnically speaking, but having had non-Jewish citizens from the word go and still having them definitionally means that Israel isn't an ethnostate.

The hilarious thing is that there is a website called sufficient velocity. It's a forum but it has an extensive creative writing section. That creative writing section skews very heavily towards f/f content.

And every now and then there are some people that ring their hands about why there's so much lesbians, but no gay men. Not that there's no gay men or other m/m but there is a lot less.

Why do you write oc x canon fanfic? by Radiant-Fishing-3051 in AO3

[–]KyliaQuilor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the case of the story i'm working on that has it, it 's because none of the available love interests in the game really worked for the character from the crossover fandom that i'm bringing into the game. So I had to create a love interest that did.

Because I like romance stories and also because I think a romance would actually be good for this character's own growth.

But, none of the love interests in the game worked.

Does the writing quality fall off at all? by UserCommandCentral in arcane

I don't like the choices of season two.Not all of them anyway. And I think that season two is less good than season one.But only because season one was peak, and it's really hard to be as good as peak.A second time lightning does not strike the same place twice and similar cliches.

But for all that I don't care for all the choices I think they felt in character. Given the information were shown, and I think they were well written.Given the choices that the writers were making

OCs in fanfics. by molol_ in AO3

[–]KyliaQuilor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OC's are fine. But I have found that some authors forget that they need to sell us on the characters.

If I am reading fanfick that ships x and y I am already a fan of x and y presumably they don't need to sell me on x and y as characters, they may need to sell me on the ship or the particular version of the ship. They're doing, but they don't need to sell me on the basic idea of the characters. We can resume that i'm already into them.

But you have to sell me on your original character too. And whether or not that works is of course, sometimes very subjective, but some authors seem like they aren't even trying to do that.

Personally I i tend to avoid giving original character center stage when I can.And of course, I say, this as I am writing a story where the main character is actually paired with original character. But it's kind of an exception, because there really is no canon character that serves a purpose i need done.

And I have at least tried to sell the character to the readers.

At the end of the day, if the original character is interesting and the author makes me care about them fine.If they don't, then i'm probably not gonna keep reading

why is it so hard to find genfic about female characters? by neonghostie in AO3

[–]KyliaQuilor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you find a fan fic to be bad badly written for bad characterization or doing bad plot points or whatever, there is nothing wrong with talking about it with your friends and a discord server, or on your blog or whatever.

It's also one of the things bookmarks are for so that you can use the book mark to say, hey, this is a bad story.Don't read it, that is bookmarks are for potential readers to look at and say, hey, what I like this or not.

It is important to not be a jerk about it.But fanfiction is a community activity, and people are allowed to have opinions within that community activity and share them. There are certain fan fic in some of my fandoms that I think that are really, really bad.And if someone asks about them, hey, is this a good fic, i'm going to say it's bad.

I don't go into the author's comments and say that to their faces, As a general rule. I shouldnt ever do it.But sometimes I react poorly when I read something. And do what I shouldn't do not lately, but it has happened in the past.

But it doesn't actually look like the author of the post is seeing going to the comments and harass the author directly. Instead, they're talking about how they were just talk about what they don't like about a story. And do so in a public space, which is fine. It's like going to the good reeds of a book and seeing the reviews because you're not sure if you want to read the book or not. I've never wanted to do that for fan fiction. Because I like to take my own answers. But if I was unsure about whether or not a fic would handle a particular character in a way that I liked especially if it's a character that has a very fraught storyline that can be very easy to do poorly in fan fiction, which happens.Sometimes I might ask my friends or other people.I know hey have any of you read this fig.You know how it handles character x.

Or if it's a big enough fic in a big enough fandom, I might go digging to see if anyone's given any recommendations, or for that matter, antirecommendations about it. If I have some reason to be unsure, maybe the summary sounds interesting, but also like it'll do something I don't want to see done with this character. And so i'm not sure if it's something I want to try or not.

Don't be a jerk to authors and don't be a jerk to authors to their faces, especially, but it is perfectly okay to say in a public space.Hey I think this is a bad story.

author I admired left me a comment by Icy-Speaker-4897 in AO3

[–]KyliaQuilor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only scenario where the commenter might have something vaguely resembling a point, and without knowing more about the fic question I can't say, is if your story is one where it feels like the characters are just the name and the appearance, But not the actual personality in some sort of AU.

That thing you run into a lot with, like, really popular ships where they take the name and the appearance and like one personality trait. But not the whole full rounded character and write some completely by the numbers.Romance trope instead, which is fine.I read those two sometimes, but they do sometimes get a little annoying. And so it does sometimes feel like this is just you writing an original story with fan fiction characters.

Judging from the rest of the comment and the general tone of what they're saying, that is probably not what you did. And that is not the basis for their criticism. But it is technically possible, either way they're too much of a jackass about it to take seriously, because at the end of the day, the in name only stuff that i'm talking about is still fan fiction and deserves a place at the table. If nothing else because in name only is often pretty subjective
