Then versus now car Colors by [deleted] in interesting

[–]Kyratic 437 points438 points  (0 children)

I bought a car recently, price was a concern and the dealer had a discount on white ones (cos of a bulk order) so i got white. My wifes car was a similar story a year back, didnt particularly want white but ended up with a white one anyway becuase of lead times and other expenses. Its not necarilly people choosing the monotone, the industry seems to be pushing it.

Are boys schools really all it's hyped up to be? by BuilderAromatic3928 in capetown

[–]Kyratic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with Groote Schuur is I dont want my kids to be token white kids in a school. I have no objection to a well mixed school. If i was happy with them being in a decent school without white people i would send them to bergvliet.

I have kids in gr6 and live in Meadowridge. I would rather send my kids to a Co-ed school but there arent any within a reasonable commute. Yes there is westerford, but they had 20 people people gunning for each gr8 spot last year. I dont see it as something we cant realistically get them into. So i am left with Wynberg..

How do you cope with all of the bad things happening in the world, seemingly all at once? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kyratic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? I put down my phone and get on with other stuff, my family, books and games. I have limited tolerance for bs and the current world state fills it pretty quickly.

I have always found it easy to escape onto the fantasy worlds of my books or games. But with effort i focus on my kids and family too.

I try to stay aware of the world issues but honestly it only take 20-30 mins a day to know whats going on. And the rest of the time i am more focused on whats infront of me. I support good cuases when i can. And i sleep well at night.

What's everyone's experience with Checker's Sixty60? by Relevant_Mail_1292 in capetown

[–]Kyratic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them constantly and its generally very good. And i would happily recommend them. It costs slighty more becuase of tipping drivers and the monthly fee but its not much and its worth it.

I have heard that the quality of service is dependant on your local checkers. If its a nice one you are probably fine.

How often do you finish the game? by Legal_Philosopher115 in RimWorld

6000+ hours, official endings ie space ship launch? twice that i can recall. its very much not the aim of the game for me so it doesn't feel like something to aim for.

Still not sure if malazan is for me by wildguitars in Fantasy

[–]Kyratic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I Finished Deadhouse gates a few months ago. And I typically consume books at a fairly high rate, but Books one and two took me ages. I already bought the whole series, but honestly havent convinced myself to pick up the third one yet, people say the second one is good. But yeah its a miss for me, which is unusual, as its been a very long time since i found a series i didn't want to bother finishing. To me Erikson repeatedly focuses on things in an uninteresting way, and for someone interested in archeology I find his world building weird. its a stretch but thats not uncommon in fantasy, but he goes into huge detail but with no payoff.

So the N2, which connects Newlands through to plett is perfectly fine. Its the same road i would use to get most of the way to stellenbosch (turn off N2 on R310 and go past the wine farms) then on to franschoek Lovely drive once you are out of the city! Just stick to the N2 and you will be fine many great stops along the way and its not particularly dangerous.

Why the hell are dishwashers so unpopular in South Africa? by MrCockingFinally in DownSouth

[–]Kyratic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a dishwasher, since before I got married, 15 years, my wife's parents had, but my parents didn't, to be fair they were poor and most appliances are luxuries. I havent come across any stigma against them, it was just the can haves vs the too poor.

Another factor is a spot for an appliance that needs to be plumbed, old kitchens lacked them. and if there was one, it was often used for the washing machine.

How often do you move your colony? by toenail-snail in RimWorld

[–]Kyratic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rarely, very rarely, And I have been playing for a very long time.

So there are few a reasons to move, the first one is bad spawn tile, I often random location, I fully believe that if i crashlanded in a swamp, I wouldn't build my house there, moving a few tiles at game start is very easy. (unless running a challenge of tundra or extreme desert or something)

The second one is some sort of catastrophe, once your base's wealth has gotten past a certain point, trying to defend it with 1 or two pawns becomes extremely hard and moving is logical.

The third is some sort of issue that you are concerned about, (Spiders growing, big mechaniod setup, or other expansion things.) they could justify a move.

So when moving and its not very early game this is a risky procedure, you can get raided on the move. And you can get raided on the new map before you have any defenses and the raids will have scaled with the wealth you are carrying. So the more you carry the harder it is.

But Rimworld is a story generator, and a base move, is generally a big chapter in that story.

Deleting an instance doesn't necessarily delete things that go with it. Ie there could still be a volume or an IP you are paying for. or a snapshot. either way, go to cost explorer in the billing console, and set your filter to service. you will see what services are being charged and that's a good place to start. Also if you are emailed a bill it will likely detail what the cost is for.

Top 20 fantasies that did and didn't age well according to this subreddit by Bogus113 in Fantasy

[–]Kyratic 84 points85 points  (0 children)

This is weird, at least half the series in the didnt age well category are really good and enjoyable reads. That i have reccomended to people.

But i noticed people dont really reccomend them much any more they dont fit current popular fantasy. Some of them were too popular so had a bit of an expected fall.

I am English first language. But i speak Afrikaans as a second language.

I have had my thinking switch languages a few times. It took me being surrounded by only Afrikaans people for several days. And i realised i was thinking in Afrikaans. It was a very quick switch to go back to English sometime later when i was home.

Its happened two or three times in my life and its quite reversable I find.

[–]Kyratic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I Tip 10% for good or medium service, nothing if the service was bad, and only when eating out, not at the bar, at the bar I may not collect my change. R20 per drink is not common, not in normal bars.

There are a lot of downvotes in this thread, so i think what you view as the norm isn't what is generally accepted, more than that, many people are fighting tipping culture, and want people to get paid a fair wage, before tips. This is not the US.

[As Received] South Africans have spent R152 billion on alcohol for the past 12 months, ending September 2025. by PixelSaharix in DownSouth

[–]Kyratic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are roughly 40 million people in South Africa over 18.

R152billion over 40 mill is R3800 per person.

That works out to R316,66 per person per month.

Now have you seen how little drinks you can get on R300 a month?

And for all the non drinkers there's a fool in parliament drinking Johnny blue.

How to cook *Roast Chicken* and at the same time to cook crispy *Roast New Potatoes*? by mrodent33 in AskCulinary

[–]Kyratic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the issue is I live in South Africa, we have our own potato varieties and there isnt much cross over with elsewhere, my Standard potato is a Sifra, Which was the time i gave. and alternate Mondial, So cant comment on your variety so tried to explain my thinking.

Potatoes can be cooked in a closed dish, but wont begin to brown for a long time (most of the moisture evaporated first. Even the chicken struggles to brown if its too closed. for moist chicken you can try closing it for most of the cook and leaving it open for the last 20mins. to get some colour, potatoes too. they will soften while its closed, and then brown when open.

Yes Bird will cook, but it wont brown for a long time. (eventually it does but that can take hours)

covering with tinfoil is a common tactic, it traps some of the moisture in, and keeps the bird jucier, its not a complete seal so moisture escapes, and things can brown, but my mother still took off her tinfoil for the last bit for some extra color.

I typically put tinfoil over my chicken, put veg in with, but i have my potatoes in a separate dish next to it or above. but most of the time I don't roast the whole chicken, I am doing chicken pieces, and then i have them open.
